"PISTON EN METAL LEGER, POUR MOTEURS A COMBUSTION INTERNE,
EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"LIGHT METAL PISTON, FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES,
EMI1.1
". WITH ELASTIC Ul'tILdERALENF1T BODY.
Lightweight metal pistons generally have the defect that their bodies have a smooth execution and particularly in the case of quiet running engines they cannot be mounted with such low or tight clearance whether their body is working, sideways. the slightest click. In order to overcome this defect, we have already tried in practice and adapted a large number of different versions of pistons. In addition, it is known to provide longitudinal and transverse slots in the body of the piston.
Smooth body pistons have also already been shaped, without recesses or not perforated, whose body has split faces in the form of U on the bearing part of the body. However, all these pistons had the defect that, especially as a result particular properties of the aluminum alloys used, they undergo in the hot state by the work, a deformation
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
such that after a certain time a noise free of rattling could no longer be ensured.
The parts of the piston body which are split, mainly on the unloaded side of the piston, sag inward, because they lose their elasticity during work. The inability to withstand, permanently, a force elasticity comes mainly from the fact that the part of the piston body which undergoes the highest loads is usually overheated too strongly also at the height of the bearing of the connecting rod axis, and that consequently the pistons lose, after some time, the elastic working capacity which had been especially conferred on them by a heat treatment of the material constituting the piston *
U-shaped split pistons, therefore those which have a unilaterally elastic pad, separated from the piston head by a slot,
have the advantage of having the places undergoing the maximum stress during elastic deformation, in a zone which no longer reaches temperatures of an inadmissible height. In addition, by the elasticity of the piston body, the minimum possible clearance is obtained above the axis of the small end, under the part containing the piston rings. As a result, the operation of the piston can be made perfectly silent.
Despite this, these pistons also had faults in that, with the danger of low overloading, the low sliding clearance under the part containing the rings disappeared.
@
However, this defect is eliminated according to the present invention by the fact that, in a unilaterally elastic piston body, the place undergoing the maximum load and located below the bearing of the connecting rod axis receives , -by a particular system of ribs, shaped so as to extend towards the closed part of the body of the piston and towards the bearing of the axis of the connecting rod, -a moment of inertia so great, that also the hot state by work the piston no longer undergoes permanent deformation.
The cross section of the piston body is shaped, to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the place undergoing the maximum stress, so that the elastic deformation of the piston body below the part containing the rings reaches only such a small value that, as a result, an inadmissible thermal expansion of the piston. material constituting the piston to. hot state by work can be compensated
The dimension of the piston body which is little exposed to high loads and which supports, during the asoendante stroke, only the forces which are due to the compression pressure, is designed in such a way as to be elastic.
The work of elasticity to be borne by the material of the piston is made so small. - in the case of the use of light metal materials, especially those with a high silicon content, which at the same time have a very good hardness in the air. When hot, this work is permanently supported by a correspondingly sized cross section of the piston body. In order to achieve this goal the lower edge of the piston body is furthermore made in a relatively strong and robust form.
The small end bearing is connected to the lower part of the piston body by a strong system of ribs, partially executed in the form of a double T.
The appended drawing represents a non-limiting example of execution of the subject of the invention:
Figure I shows a piston partially in section and partially in elevation, viewed laterally with respect to the axis of the piston. '
Figure 2 shows the same piston, but rotated through 90, also partly in elevation and partly in section.
Figure 3 shows a section along A-B transverse to the body of the piston, in the elastic half of the body.
The inelastic portion of the piston body, shown in section in Figures I and 2, forms a whole with the segmented portion. The cross section of heat flow is di-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
sized so that most of the heat not removed by the piston rings can be removed in the bearing part of the piston body which is applied to the cylinder wall in a manner ensuring good heat transfer to the cylinder wall. this wall.
The connecting rod small end bearing is connected by ribs b to the upper part of the piston. The body of the piston itself is connected by ribs .3., Extending at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the body, to the bearing of the axis of the small end, while the elastic part d- of the body of the piston is connected by ribs e, particularly robust, to the lower part of the piston body and to the bearing of the rod foot, connecting rod and is separated from the piston ring part by a transverse slot F.
Through the ribs the piston receives a sufficiently large moment of inertia at the point of transition from the elastic part of the piston body to the closed part of the body, located below the bearing of the axis of the small end. In addition, below the bearing of the small end axis the cross section g is shaped in the shape of a double T.
In this way, not only a good connection is established between the bearing of the connecting rod pin and the closed lower part of the piston body, but also a connection of the rib e to the piston body. , and to the bearing of the connecting rod axis, on the other hand, at location h, such that at this location also no peak tension can occur which would possibly cause deformation or change permanent shape of the elastic part d of the piston body.
In the example shown, the piston is designed as a perforated piston. Lights 1 are provided on the left and on the right next to the small end pin bearing. However, since on the side of the body of the piston, namely the one which transmits the normal pressure to the wall of the cylinder, a lumen is not ab-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
solemnly neoessary or indispensable, the body of the piston can also receive a form of execution with unilateral opening, so that the robust system of ribs, serving to maintain or oonserve the elasticity of the elastic part of the body of the piston is provided only on the side of this elastic part.
The closed side of the piston body could be executed in this case also completely without ribs inside the body.
