<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

avec grille refroidie par circulation d'air;

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Perfectionnemets to gasifiers".
In transverse combustion coal gasifiers comprising a side nozzle injecting air at high speed into the mass of the fuel, and a side gas intake, it has been carried out. to increase the speed of the reactions, to use fine grain fuel, whereby the contact surfaces between the gaseous fluid and the solid fuel are increased.
The fuel grains being easily entrained by the gas current, they are retained, on the gas outlet side, by a perforated sheet metal screen or a bar grid preferably having a large surface area to avoid pressure drops. up to now, to prevent the metals constituting the sieve or the grid from suffering from the action of fire, we have
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
endeavored to keep these components at such a distance from the air inlet that they are far from the combustion zone at very high temperature.
However, experience shows that if the grid is thus protected against rapid destruction by melting or corrosion, condensation of water, tar and even silica (resulting from the decomposition of silicomethane SiH4 in the presence of humidity), which occur at the start or at low operating speeds of the gasifier, in the relatively cold zone where the grate is located, manage, by agglutinating the fuel grains, to form on the grate layers which are not very permeable to gases and which create high pressure losses.
The object of the present invention is an improvement made to gasifiers, and more particularly to gasifiers of the aforementioned type, with a view to remedying the drawback which has just been indicated. This improvement essentially consists in advancing the gas intake grid as far as the combustion zone at very high temperature, so as to capture the gases in a place where the heavy carbides are destroyed and transformed into permanent gases, the said grid being provided with cooling means ensuring the removal to the outside of excess heat from parts in contact with the very high temperature zone.
It is then observed that at an equal grid area, the pressure drop of the focal point is lower because the thickness of the reacting layer is less and because the condensations are practically eliminated, and that in addition, the efficiency of the combustion into usable permanent gases is significantly increased.
The invention also comprises the production of gas intake grids provided with cooling means enabling them to withstand the high temperatures to which they are called upon to be subjected in the implementation of the improvement defined above, as well as various modes of planning
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
cementing of such grids in transverse combustion gasifiers of known types.
These gas intake grids can be formed either by a grid proper, or by a set of tubes.
The gas intake according to the invention is characterized by a cooling element, adapted to the wall of the gasifier, combined with elements providing passage for the gas and extending into the combustion zone.
The elements providing passage to the gas can be cooled directly, for example by circulation of a fluid, so as to themselves form the cooling element adapted to the wall of the gasifier.
Said elements providing passage to the gas can also be shaped so as to leave the gas only passages of small section.
The grids according to the invention are characterized, in general, by the fact that they are formed from bars which, at one of their ends, or at both, are made of cast iron with or welded to the springs. cooled. The length and section of the bars are determined according to the cooling capacity of the bed base, so as to prevent the bars from excessive temperature. The bed base can be cooled by the circulation of a fluid (air, water, liquid resulting from the fusion of a body with a low melting point, etc.) or be made of solid metal cooling either directly on the outside. or by radiation from the cold walls of the gasifier in the vicinity of or in contact with which said base is placed.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, in the case where the base of the grid (or of the grids if the gasifier comprises several) is cooled by air circulation, the air heated in contact with the base can be cooled. sent to the injection nozzle, which realizes a simple process and

efficient preheating of the injection air,
The gas intake grid (s) in accordance with the invention may, in particular depending on the type of gasifier, be arranged vertically or at a certain angle with the vertical and be placed at the level of the inlet of the gas generator. air, above this inlet or, preferably, below, the essential condition being, in all cases, that they are at such a distance from it that the gases are captured in an area where the heavy carbides are destroyed.
They can be arranged around the perimeter of the body of the gasifier, or be mounted on a support plate disposed tangentially to this body, or else be made integral with a door allowing them to be visited and possibly changed.
Various embodiments of the object of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, by way of non-limiting examples. In these drawings:

<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
with air-cooled grid;
Fig, 14 is a schematic vertical section of a gas generator with grid cooled by circulation of liquid.
Figs. 1 and 2 represent a grid having the shape of a rectangle elongated in the horizontal direction and whose bars in one piece, as shown in 1a, or in two pieces, as in 1b, form a body with a hollow base 2. This - it receives a cooling fluid entering at 3 and exiting at 4.
In the variant of FIGS. 3 and 4, the grid has a circular shape. The bars 1 are radiating. The base a is hollow as above and receives a cooling fluid at 3, the latter exiting at 4. As will be seen below, several similar grids can be grouped together on the same gasifier, if necessary.
In the variant of FIGS, 5 and 6, the grid, of rectangular shape, comprises a solid base 2 having a profile preferably flared outwards and with which are integral, as. in fig. 1 and 2, either bars 1a in one piece, or bars 1b in two pieces. This method of constructing the grid with a solid base can also apply to the case of circular grids. like that shown in fig. 3 and 4. The bars have been shown here of trapezoidal shape; such a form could also apply to the other types described.
The pins 7 and 8 represent another device comprising several elements 5 provided respectively with a vertical slot 5a and which are fixed by welding to a flat bed base 6 of rectangular shape or made of cast iron with the latter. The elements 5 have such a projection, in front of the bed base 6, that when the latter is in place on the side wall of the gasifier - for example according to one of the arrangements described below - their anterior end 5a comes down. in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
high temperature combustion zone.
In the example of application of FIGS. 9 and 1a, the represented gasifier comprises a cylindrical body 7 with a vertical axis, in which laterally submerges an air injection nozzle 8.
On the side opposite to the nozzle 8, is connected to the body 7 a gas collection box 9, having the shape of a cylinder with a horizontal axis and which is provided with a circular side door 10. The grid, composed here bars 1 forming part of a circular hollow base a containing a cooling material with a low melting point or a liquid boiling at high temperature, is fixed to a rectangular plate 11 mounted in rebates 1a, tangentially to the cylindrical body 7 gasifier. In accordance with the invention, the grid thus formed protrudes in front of the plane of the plate 11, so as to capture the gases within the combustion zone itself at high temperature.
Instead of a single circular grid, several similar grids could be grouped together on the same plate 11, these grids possibly being cooled by a fluid or provided with a solid base.
Fig. 11 shows a similar arrangement applied to the case of a rectangular grid with a solid base, of the type shown in FIGS. 5 and 6. A similar arrangement could be made with a rectangular grid similar to that of FIGS. 1 and 3 or figs. 7 and 8.
Fig. 12 shows a horizontal section of a gasifier in which two cylindrical grids of the type shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 are arranged around the perimeter of the body 7, symmetrically with respect to the air injection nozzle 8.
Figs. 13 and 14 show arrangements which can be applied advantageously to the case of grids with box springs cooled by circulation of fluid, such as those of FIG. 1 and 2 or fig. 3 and 4.
In the example of FIG. 13, the gasifier is fitted with 13
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
of a cleaning door, the base 2 of the grid, cooled by air circulation, is mounted, by means of a sliding plate 14 in a side casing 15 connected in a sealed manner to the body of the gasifier and provided with a gas outlet pipe 16. The housing 15 is closed by a door 17 to which the cooling air inlet 3 and outlet 4 ducts are attached, so that the entire grid is made integral with this door and can be taken out of the gasifier to be visited or changed.
The conduits 3 and 4 are connected to the outside by couplings 1c and 19, to pipes 20 and 21 for the air supply and departure. The air outlet pipe 21 goes to the injection nozzle 6 which it supplies with hot air.
The arrangement of FIG. 14 is analogous to the previous one but applies to the case of a box-spring grid cooled by water or by liquid boiling at high temperature. In this case, the inlet 3 and outlet 4 conduits for the cooling fluid are connected to a radiator 22 intended to eliminate the calories entrained by this fluid.
Of course, and as is already apparent from what has been said above, the examples shown and described above in no way limit the implementation of the invention, the latter can give rise to numerous variants, not only in this which concerns the arrangement of the grids on the gasifier, but also with regard to the construction of these grids.
In particular, instead of being rectangular or circular, these could affect any other shape and be oval, for example. The bars can have sections of any suitable shape and be corrugated.
