<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
On introduit par heure, en travail continu, 150 kg, de bichromate de sodium solide et 110 kg. d'acide sulfurique à 96% dans le récipient de 126 litres de capacité, en fer forgé, dans lequel a lieu la réaction et qu'on chauffe à 200;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Apparatus for the continuous execution of reaction and separation operations taking place in parallel.
It is known that chromic acid can be prepared by mixing a chromate or an alkali metal dichromate with sulfuric acid, heating the mixture until it melts and mechanically separating in a settling tank or a centrifugal impeller. substances, chromic acid and alkali bisulfate which form. The use of a settling tank or a centrifugal impeller is unfavorable and only because of the known corrosive properties of chromic acid, it should already be avoided as far as possible for reasons of hygiene. . In addition, any measure leading to a simplification of the modus operandi and, consequently, a restriction of manual work must be regarded as significant technical progress.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It has now been found that the preparation and separation of chromic acid and alkali sulphate or other substances which behave in an analogous fashion are surprisingly simplified when the procedure is carried out. separation of the substances resulting from the reaction in a part of the vessel in which this reaction takes place, which part, however, is outside the reaction zone, and which these substances are removed separately from there.
This avoids the usual transfer of the reaction product to special separation equipment. This effect is carried out in such a way that, in the vessel where the reaction takes place and which can be heated, the chamber proper is separated by a partition, where this reaction takes place and in which the raw materials are mixed as well as possible, in order to accelerate the reaction, by agitators or the like, in such a way that the mixture, after the completion of the reaction, passes, under the influence of the charge which continues continuously entering the reaction or separation chamber and after separation the products obtained can be removed separately.
The new procedure has the advantage that the amounts of heat expended to keep the apparatus at the melting temperature must be much less than in a known process where the reaction is carried out in an apparatus and separation in another device separate from the first. This has the additional disadvantage that the chromic acid obtained remains for a relatively long time in the liquid state by melting, which results in gradual decomposition. In general, chromic acid should be brought to the solid state in twenty minutes or less, because by remaining in the liquid state for a longer period of time it turns black.
In the known method, it is not /
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
can avoid maintaining the chromic acid longer in the liquid state, with the detrimental consequences that this entails, while, by the new process, the reaction and separation take place in a few minutes - and that is obtained very clean chromic acid, the color of which has not changed.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the spirit of the invention.
In a container 1, heated in any way, there is a suspended cylinder 2 in which rotates a shaft 3 provided with scrapers and agitator blades.
Below the upper edge of the container 1 is an overflow 4 and, at the bottom, a discharge port 5 provided with a shutter member. When the chromium salt and sulfuric acid are introduced into the suspended cylinder in the proportions necessary for the reaction, this mixture approximately fills the vessel and the suspended cylinder, at the same time this mixture is supplied, by heating to melting temperature and the reaction proceeds with formation of chromic acid and alkali bisulfate. Under the action of heat and the stirrer, the reaction proceeds very rapidly in the hanging cylinder. The liquid and denser chromic acid collects at the bottom of the container, while the liquid bisulfate rises between the container and the suspended cylinder and finally overflows through the overflow 4.
Chromic acid can be drawn off from time to time through outlet 5, which is at the bottom, or the outlet from the bottom can also be adjusted so that the constant withdrawal of chromic acid corresponds to the load. continuous raw materials. To rule out the consequences of a possibly incorrect adjustment of the flow of chromic acid, it is advisable to provide, like a Florentine flask, a second overflow 6 separated from the rest @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of the contents of the receptacle 1 by a partition 7 which descends almost to the bottom and whose height in relation to the level of the bisulfate overflow, above an allowed separation layer, is in inverse proportion to the specific weights. cifics of chromic acid and bisulfate.
In this case, the separation layer is established automatically in the sump, at the height considered as the base, and the chromic acid as well as the bisulphate never overflow except insofar as the loading takes place, without it there is a danger that, by a too strong racking, one of the products is carried away by the other. To prevent the entrainment of bisulfate by the formation of eddies at the outlet 5 of the chromic acid, a guide plate 8 is advantageously provided above this outlet 5.
The suspended cylinder is provided with heating elements, preferably electric, because the main heat input is necessary inside this cylinder, for fusion, while, for the rest, heat is not required. necessary only to prevent premature solidification. In uninterrupted operation, the heating of the suspended cylinder can be replaced by the preliminary heating of the sulfuric acid, the heat given off by the reaction sufficient then to melt the mixture.
In this way, it is therefore possible to carry out the reaction and the separation of the two materials in one and the same container, which considerably simplifies the whole operation and makes it more hygienic.
EXAMPLE OF IMPLEMENTATION.
150 kg of solid sodium dichromate and 110 kg are introduced per hour, continuously. 96% sulfuric acid in the 126-liter wrought iron vessel in which the reaction takes place and which is heated to 200;
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
and the reaction mixture is stirred continuously.
Stirring promotes both the reaction and the separation of the end products. The flow of the reaction products, chromic acid and sodium bisulfate, takes place automatically and at the same rate as the loading. At the reaction temperature of 200; chromic acid has the specific gravity of 2.25. The specific gravity of bisulfate is 1.99 at a temperature of 200. Chronic acid instantly separates from bisulfate.
