<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"PROCESS AND DEVICE FOR PRESSURE CASTING OF METALS IN A VERY FLUID STATE OF LIQUIDITY".
A die-casting machine is known which makes it possible to die-cast zinc, in a very fluid state of liquidity, at considerably higher pressures than has heretofore been possible by means of injection-casting machines. The liquid metal is brought from the melting crucible into the unheated compression chamber, in precisely measured quantities, by a displacement piston arranged in a cylinder (French patent N 823817).
In addition, it is known to lift liquid metal, particularly magnesium and its alloys above the liquid bath by a piston cylinder arranged in the melting crucible, and to transport it in this way in and through a pipe. '' led horizontally to an unheated compression chamber,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
During this time the metal changes from the state of very fluid liquidity to the state of viscous liquidity, so that it is subjected in the unheated compression chamber to pressure casting to a state of viscous liquidity. (French patent N 818897).
The object forming the basis of the present invention is to pressure die metals, particularly zinc, in a state of complete liquidity ("liquidus"), at a higher pressure than was previously possible. now by means of injection molding machines. The invention starts from the known die-casting machine, mentioned above, in which the liquid metal is supplied, in exactly metered quantity, by a device known in injection casting machines, and here acting as a transfer device. , in the unheated compression chamber, being immediately die-cast, before cooling to a viscous liquid state.
According to the invention this combination, known per se, of a conveyor device with a die-casting machine (unheated compression chamber) is improved, or perfected, by the fact that the connection between the device conveyor (of the kind of injection molding devices), moving the liquid metal, with the unheated compression chamber, is maintained only during the limited time of the introduction of the metal into this. last.
Thus, the process of die casting liquid metal is carried out so that the opening of an injection nozzle, known in injection casting machines, of the transfer device is transiently brought into correspondence or in communication with. the opening for introducing metal into the unheated compression chamber, and that after the introduction of metal and the closing of the opening for introducing into the compression chamber by the compression piston itself, or by other obturators, the nozzle / injection nozzle is automatically withdrawn again.
In injection molding machines it is known to bring the injection nozzle to the inlet channel, divided or not divided, of a mold, only for the duration of the introduction of the metal and to withdraw it at again after the introduction of the metal. However with
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
With these known devices, only a pressure of at most about 80 to 100 atmospheres can be achieved. On the other hand, considerably higher pressures can be produced with die casting machines.
But, whereas in die-casting machines the metal has been die-cast, until now, only in the state of viscous liquidity, it is possible, with the die-casting machine according to the invention, to seal.
1st under pressure the liquid metal in the state of complete liquidity (liquidus) by applying the high pressures of a die-casting machine, hence the properties, from the point of view of bending resistance to impact, finished molded parts are essentially improved. By the fact that, according to the invention, the mouth of the injection molding device, in this case acting as a conveyor device,
comes into contact with the unheated compression chamber only for the duration of the introduction of the liquid metal into the latter, a subtraction of heat is avoided and therefore a cooling of this very mouth, hence the liquid metal does not undergo any change in its state of complete liquidity (liquidus) during its stay in the neck or the transport channel of the discharge device, by the fact that it descends, after the introduction of the metal into the chamber of compression, out of the neck or pan, or out of the mouth, to such an extent that the bath in the melting pot keeps it hot on all sides.
In addition, it is possible, according to a further characteristic of the invention, to maintain the neck or channel, respectively, the same mouth, of the transport device, by suitable heating devices, always at the same time. temperature necessary to maintain the state of complete liquidity (liquidus).
The process according to the invention can be carried out with the use of any known die-casting and injection-casting machine. Among the many possible combinations $ in this case, however, preference should generally be given to that, in which the piston of the compression chamber, unheated, -
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
which can be additionally artificially cooled or heated, depending on the quantity of metal cast under pressure, - is arranged, with the compression chamber, coaxially with respect to the inlet channel of the mold and with respect to the mold, because in this way the liquid metal introduced into the compression chamber can be introduced into the mold on the shortest path without any change of direction, in the liquid state (and not pasty or viscous).
The conveyor or transfer device is constructed in such a way as to avoid during the transfer a great acceleration of the liquid metal, as is desirable in the injection molding machines, therefore in such a way that it takes place. - there is only a calm flow of the metal jet and consequently a dispersion and shocks of the metal are suppressed in the unheated compression chamber.
The process according to the present invention and devices suitable for carrying it out will be described in more detail by way of nonlimiting examples in what follows. Instead of lifting the metal, as shown in the figures of the accompanying drawings, the metal can also be forced into the compression chamber, in the manner known for an injection molding machine, but only with low acceleration.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing shows schematically a vertical section through a conveyor device, constructed in the manner of injection molding machines, with an unheated compression chamber connected thereto, at the time of decanting.
Figure 2 shows the same device as Figure I at the time of the completion of the die casting.
FIG. 3 represents a plan view of the device according to FIG.
FIG. 4 likewise represents a plan view of the device according to FIG. 2.

<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
By 1 is designated a melting crucible, closed from the atmosphere by the cover plate 3, to prevent oxidation of easily oxidizable metals, such as aluminum or magnesium.
By 3 is designated a cylinder in the form of a bottle, with a piston 4 which moves therein in an upward and downward reciprocating direction. To the cylinder 3 is connected, externally to the melting crucible 1, a pipe 5 with an interchangeable mouthpiece 6 and in case heatable requirement ending with a cap-shaped nozzle 7.
The metal enters from the melting crucible 1 through the openings 8 into the cylinder ¯3 above the piston 4 and can be transported and introduced, by an upward and downward reciprocating movement of the piston rod 11., respectively of the piston 9, in the cylinder 10, towards the mouth -6 and through the opening 12, provided in the non-heated compression chamber 13, in the latter.
By the upward movement of the piston 14 in the compression chamber 13 the opening 12 is closed, and simultaneously a subsequent supply of metal through the mouth 6, is interrupted as a result of the descent of the piston! in cylinder 3, the control or control of piston 9 can be coupled for this purpose, usefully automatically, to the control or control of piston 14. Simultaneously the mouthpiece ¯6 is withdrawn from the opening 12 by the fact that the conveyor device (3, 4, 5) is withdrawn with the control rod 18 by an oonreweight 17 suspended from an oable 16 guided on a roller 15.
A shutter plate 19 slidably disposed above or on the cover plate 3 is rigidly fixed to the conveyor cylinder 3 and is guided in the manner of a slide by means of slots 20 and bolts 21, with the possibili- tee of any suitable adjustment laterally as well as vertically. The introduction of the metal into the melting crucible is carried out through the opening 2a which can be covered separately.
The approximation of the opening. 7. of the mouth 6 of the opening 12 in the cold compression chamber 13 is made., according to Figures I and 3, by hand or mechanically by means of a lever 23 pivoting around a pin 33¯ (figure 3),
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
so that the control rod 18, passed through this lever is pushed to the left with a stop 25 biased by a spring 24.
At the same time a control rod or distributor 26, articulated to the lever 23 with a suitable clearance, and connected by means of a pivoting arm 27, for example to a valve 28, is moved to the left, hence the valve 28 lets the compressed air escape from the cylinder 10, above the piston 9, through line 3¯0 and through line 29, to the outside.
Due to the back pressure exerted on the possibly adjustable spring 32 arranged on the rod 11 of the piston and held under tension by the stop 31, is canceled, so that the spring 32, stretched so far, raised the rod 11 of the piston and leaving the conveying piston 4 in the cylinder .5, thereby causing the transport of the liquid metal out of the melting crucible towards the mouth 6 and from the latter into the compression chamber 13.
The length of the stroke of the piston 4 can be adjusted at will by moving the stop 31 or an adjusting screw 33, depending on the size of the content or the capacity of the mold which connects to the compression chamber 13 of known manner by a fixed or stationary half 35 of the mold and a movable half 36 of the latter.
When the lever 23 is released, or moved to the right, the counterweight 17 withdraws by means of the control rod 18 the transport device (3,5,6) behind, and at the same time the control or distributor rod 26 is moved to the right by the pressure of the spring 34, and by means of the lever 27 causes the valve 28 to rotate so that the compressed air in the supply line 34 now finds a access to line 30, and hence into cylinder 10. Now, the compressed air pushes piston 9 in cylinder IO downwards, and thus again causes piston 4 to descend into the bath of liquid metal , so that the rest of the metal coming from the mouthpiece 6 returns to the metal bath (figure 2).
It is advisable to also keep the parts or parts placed outside the melting crucible 1, - around the mouth 6, as long as they come into contact with the metal @
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
liquid, - by external heating (electric resistance heating or the like, or, at least by good insulation, to the necessary temperature above the melting temperature of the metal.
The exemplary embodiment shown of the displacement and of the guide in reciprocating direction of the mouth 6 with respect to the opening 12 of the compression chamber 13, can be replaced by any other embodiment known in the injection molding machines. However, conveyor devices have been found to be advantageous in which the metal is lifted out of the bath, or is fed into the cold compression chamber with only low (hydrostatic) pressure, in order to avoid stirring or backwashing during 'entry into the cold compression chamber.
In addition, it is advantageous to provide a coupling of the distribution valve 28 of the conveyor device with the distribution valve of the piston of the cold compression chamber, so that after the completion of the transfer, the compression piston is immediately set in motion.
The execution examples according to figures 5 and 6 represent a section in a lying oompression chamber (horizontal)
13 with oompressor piston 14 'and with one half / fixed, or stationary, 35, and .a movable half 36 ,. of the mold * FIG. 5 represents a mold with a divided inlet channel, and FIG. 6 a mold with an undivided inlet channel, in order to show the different application possibilities of the transfer device according to l This invention can be connected to any die casting machine to replace its filling by hand with automatic filling.
Instead of moving the cylinder ± of the transfer device with the mouth °, it is also possible to provide a fixed arrangement of the cylinder and only a movable arrangement of the mouth 6 and, where appropriate, of the tubing 5 relative to the cylinder 3. .
