<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF PHOSPHATE COATINGS ON PER AND STEEL"
Various processes are known for the production of phosphate coatings on iron and steel using solutions of heavy metal phosphates, which may contain, if necessary for the acceleration of the coating formation, nitrates, or other accelerators, these processes being able to be divided essentially into two groups, according to their mode of application, namely, in processes by immersion, in which the objects are immersed in solutions of phosphate, and in processes of application by projection .in which the solutions are projected onto the objects.
The processes of the latter group con-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
are particularly suitable for series work, in which cleaning, plaster formation and sub-treatment are carried out on a conveyor belt.
It has often been claimed that the solutions described are applicable according to both kinds of process, and this is certainly true for freshly prepared solutions, although the separate solutions can sometimes behave better according to one of the modes of application. Likewise, with solutions which have only been reused a few times, possibly after regeneration, disturbances do not necessarily have to occur. It has been found, however, that in the case where it is desired to ensure a prolonged use of the solutions, the solutions intended to be used according to the immersion processes and the solutions intended to be used according to the spraying processes, must be prepared from different points of view,
and also regenerated according to different points of view. For the application according to the immersion process solutions based on zinc phosphate containing nitrate are known, and for this purpose there are processes which ensure a long life. of these baths.
When carrying out the phosphatization according to the immersion process, it is necessary to maintain a certain zinc content in the working bath, giving the starting bath a concentration as high as possible of zinc and also of zinc. continuously supplying as much zinc as possible into the bath. This can best be achieved by the fact that the starting solution contains, besides zinc phosphate, zino nitrate, therefore only cations which are consumed for the formation of the layer.
However, according to the projection processes this measurement precisely is not necessary, and even harmful in many cases. Indeed, during the pumping and the projection of the working solution, the oxygen of the air - possibly aided by the formation of nitrite, - produces the oxidation of ferrous iron in solution and its elimination in the form of insoluble ferric phosphate. Dono unlike immersion baths, he / is pro-. '
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
There is no iron enrichment in the solution. Therefore, it is easier to prevent a lowering of the zinc content of the solution.
For use in the spraying process, it has been found to be advantageous, both to ensure good formation of the coating and a long duration of the solution employed, to choose a ratio of P2O5: NO3 between 1 : 2.5 and 1: 4, and preferably an initial value of 1.5 to 3 g of zino per liter.
It has therefore been found useful in maintaining this condition to add the nitrate contained in the starting solution, most of it, preferably all, as the alkali nitrate. If all of the nitrate were introduced into the starting solution, in the form of zinc nitrate, there would be, in spraying processes, the danger that the solution would become too rich in zinc, especially if it was supplemented. - te with a solution of zinc phosphate and zinc nitrate.
The zinc concentration therefore rises in the working solution. In the event of enrichment of the zinc in the solution there is a danger that the soluble primary phosphate will hydrolyze and pass as insoluble tertiary phosphate in the sludge. This leads to a greater depletion of P2O5 and has for consequence that the duration of the bath is greatly reduced. To fulfill # the condition of keeping the P2O5 content constant alongside a constant zinc content, -because the content in P2O5 of the working bath is of decisive importance for the formation of the plaster it is useful that half up to 3/4, by weight, of the total metal content of the starting solution is present here in the form of alkali metal, preferably sodium. In addition, the solutions may still contain copper.
Then, it has been found useful to maintain the pH at a level of 2-3 and to work at a lower concentration than in the usual immersion processes *. As a very useful concentration level, it turned out that of a 5 to 10 point bath, i.e. a solution of which 10 cm3 saturate, at an indicated titration.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
with phenolphthalein, 5-10 om3 of 1/10 normal sodium hydroxide solution. The temperature of the bath is usefully between 60 and 85 C. The ratio between the quantity circulating by pumping and the total volume of the solution is preferably 1: 3 to 1: 6. The formation of the plaster occurs in very little time (0.5-2 minutes).
It is assisted by vigorous preliminary cleaning, as well as by the application of increased pressure when the solution is sprayed, which ensures good wetting and good renewal of the solution on the treated surface. In the present case it is advantageous to apply to the surface such quantities of solution that a washing or entrainment effect follows, which ensures a continual and rapid renewal of the solution. reacting.
Completion of the solution is of particular importance for the maintenance of the activity of the solution and its long life. Consequently, for the completion of the working bath, solutions are used which preferably contain, next to zinc phopphate, zinc nitrate, the weight ratio of the metal to P2O5: N03 amounting to this. case at (0.4 to 0.6): 1: (0.4 to 0.6). In order to avoid an enrichment of the alkali content of the solution, it is best to forgo the introduction of relatively large quantities of alkali nitrate, with the full solution, into the working bath.
It has further been found that a low alkali metal solution has, compared to solutions free of alkali metal, the advantage that fresh spray solution, or a spray solution already in use, gives after a break. of relatively prolonged work, immediately at its new job, finely crystalline and uniform plasters without having to first adapt it to work for a certain time.
Since it is therefore useful to maintain an alkali metal content in the working solution, it is necessary to supplement the. loss, -which occurs mechanically (causes-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of the solution by the phesphatized parts), - giving the completely solution a low alkali metal content. In this case the alkali metal content can amount to about 1/10 of the total metal concentration. In addition, the solutions of completeness can still contain copper.
It is useful to replace only the consumption of the active substance solution in the formation of the plaster by the filling solution, whereas in the case of relatively large mechanical losses it is useful to bring the solution back to work at active concentration not with the solution of completely, but with the initial solution.
In principle, the solutions used in the spraying process are completed as in the immersion process, that is to say, for example, by determining the depletion of the solution by titrating the number of points and by restoring it. blurring the number of points by adding the filling solution. This completion can be done on an ongoing basis, or from time to time.
It is useful to subject the resulting coatings to further treatment, preferably in hot solutions supporting hexavalent chromium compounds.
The following example will serve for the subsequent explanation of the invention:
For the preparation of a 10-point bath, 50 cm3 of a starting concentrated solution with 45 gr of Zn / L, 160 gr of NaZO / L. 340 gr / L of NO3, 100 gr of P2O5 / L and 0.35 gr of Ou / L, are completed to I L, with water. The projection solution is continuously oompleted, keeping the number of points constant, by adding a concentrated solution of completion with 135 gr of Zn / L, 275 gr of P2O5 / L, 125 gr of N03 / L, 13 , 5 gr of Na2O / L, 1.0 gr of Cu / L. The solution is applied by spraying, at a temperature of about 80 ° C. and a pressure of 0.7-1 atmospheres of relative pressure, on the iron object to be treated.
The duration of treatment is approximately 1-2 minutes.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Subsequently the objects pass through a drainage zone, in which they remain for about 1/2 to 1 minute, and are then cleaned by jets or spraying water for 1/2 to 1 minute, then subjected, after intercalation of a draining zone to an additional rinse with a hot solution of 60-80 C containing 0.5 g of CrO3 / L, and subsequently dried at about 120-160 C for 4ai2 minutes.
