Parapluie raccourcissable
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>

Shortenable umbrella
The invention relates to a shortenable umbrella, the ribs and the handle of which are made up of elements which retract telescopically into each other, the forks of the umbrella being articulated on the outer elements of the scales. Its purpose is to eliminate the influence which the length of the forks, corresponding to the deployed position of the umbrella, exerts on the degree of shortening, without the handling of the umbrella becoming more difficult.
The invention consists in constituting the forks of the umbrella, that is to say the elements connecting the slide or slider of the umbrella to the external elements of the ribs, by a system of links which has the property of increasing during deployment. of the umbrella the distance between the runner and the outer rib element and, conversely, to reduce this distance again during the folding of the umbrella.
Because of this short--
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The distance between the articulation of the outer rib element and the articulation of the strut automatically increases, the degree of shortening of the umbrella can be appreciably increased, -especially when the ribs consist of more than two elements, - without the need to use any locking mechanism to lock the rib elements in the extended position.
Numerous embodiments of rod systems are known which have the property of automatically shortening when the umbrella is closed. For example, we can replace the usual simple fork with a kind of Nuremberg chisel, one inner end of which is hinged to the slide of the umbrella and the other inner end is hinged to an auxiliary slide or slider placed at the bottom above the main runner, while the outer end of the scissors is hinged to the outer rib member.
However, this embodiment of the invention has the drawback that the number of intermediate articulations of the fork becomes relatively large and that, when the umbrella is closed, many elements are superimposed, which creates constructive difficulties and increases the thickness of the umbrella.
In its preferred embodiment, the invention overcomes these drawbacks by ensuring that the system of rods replacing the single fork consists of a telescoping rod, the elements of which extend automatically under the action of. an auxiliary fork when the umbrella is opened and are held in the extended position when the umbrella is opened. This embodiment of the rod system is distinguished by great simplicity. In comparison with an umbrella with ordinary rigid forks supported by auxiliary forks, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
system of rods used to support the whale, with - apart from the telescopic shape of the forks - only one additional element.
Instead of telescoping the elements of the rod which, in this embodiment, connects the outer whale element to the runner, it is also possible to shape the rod so that it is foldable and to order it using a device of auxiliary forks modified accordingly. However, the foldable shape of the rod results, much as with the use of Nuremberg scissors, that many parts of the frame are superimposed in the folded position and, above all, in the connected position. Umbrella Courcie.
In all constructions, the control members serving to lengthen the rod system are put into action by causing them to rest against a fixed point of the handle during the deployment of the umbrella. Instead the force required to lengthen the rod system can however also be generated by means of springs.
The invention further relates to shaping and guiding the rib members relative to each other when the rib is composed of three or more elements. From this point of view one comes up against the difficulty that the articulation connecting the outer rib element to the fork must pass beyond the outer end of the inner rib element when the umbrella is shortened and s 'separate it completely when extending the umbrella. This obligation is not very compatible with the guidance that the intermediate rib element must have on the inner rib element. The invention overcomes this difficulty by a suitable arrangement and conformation of the guide members.
Particularly satisfactory guidance is obtained by
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
as well as a simple construction when the hollow intermediate rib element is slidably mounted on the outside on the inner rib element, also hollow, so that when the umbrella is shortened, the outer rib element , having the smallest diameter, is surrounded by the inner rib member of hollow cross section which, on the other hand, is surrounded by the intermediate strut member also having a hollow cross section.
(When in the present description it is a question of inner, intermediate and outer rib elements, this denomination refers to the position of the elements relative to the handle in the open umbrella and not to the position that these elements occupy when they are engaged in each other).
When the strut elements consist of three or more elements, there is still the additional difficulty that the intermediate strut element, which is not connected directly to the fork or to the rod system acting as the fork, can move unhindered outwards, ie move away from the handle, when the umbrella is open. It is therefore necessary to provide a stopper which limits the displacement of the intermediate element outwards with respect to the internal rib element.
Given, however, that the inner rib element must be absolutely smooth on both sides so that it is possible to slide on this element and in it the other two elements respectively, it is arranged in accordance with to the invention so that a stop formed on the guide stirrup of the intermediate rib element cooperates with a shoulder of the wall of the hollow inner rib element, this shoulder being arranged so as to leave free the hollow of the inner whale element.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The invention also relates to an embodiment of an umbrella handle consisting of three or more parts, in which the different parts are prevented from rotating with respect to each other. Such a blocking is difficult due to the presence of an intermediate sleeve element, given that unlike a handle comprising only two elements, at least three elements must be prevented from rotating relative to each other. - very and that it is necessary at the same time to limit by means of stops, in two places, the movement of extension. According to the invention, the guide grooves, formed in the elements of the handle, which serve to prevent rotation, are used at the same time to limit the extension movement, by providing suitable protrusions or recesses.
To this end, there is provided in the intermediate sleeve element a guide groove or groove and in the sleeve element fitted in the intermediate element two grooves of which only one is to serve for the actual guidance. The extension movement can then be conveniently limited by means of simple indentations in the wall of the handle elements and corresponding projections arranged inside the guide groove. In its preferred embodiment, the invention provides, instead of simple recesses and bosses of the grooves, special built-in parts with a stop surface limited by ridges, which prevent jamming or deformation during loading. meets stops.

The handle of the umbrella shown in Figs. 1 to 3 consists of three elements 1, 2 and 3, retracting telescopically into each other, which are retained by stops 4 and 5 in the extended position shown in fig. 1. The upper element 1 of the handle carries the nut or crown 7 of the umbrella as well as a stop spring 8 which, when the umbrella is open, retains the main slider or slider 9, while the lower element 3 of the handle carries in addition to the handle 10, a stop spring 11 which blocks the main slide 9 when the umbrella is folded.
To the nut 7 are fixed by means of articulations 12 the brushes or branches of the umbrella, formed by three elements 13, 14 and 15 which telescopically enter one another. the outer member 15 of the whale 'has a solid section and is connected, at its angled inner end 16, by an articulation 17 to a rod 18. The pivot of the articulation 17 serves at the same time for the connection of a guide stirrup 19 which is slidably mounted on the hollow element 14 of the balance. The guidance is further provided by a bush 20 fixed to the outer end of the middle rib member 14.
The intermediate rib member 14 slides outwardly on the inner rib member 13 which is also hollow.
The guiding is provided by a bush 21 fixed to the inner end of the element 14 and shown on a larger scale in FIG. 8. In a hole 22 of the sleeve 21 is mounted a spring 23 formed by bending a metal wire, which when the rib is extended, is engaged by its branch 24 in a hole 25 in the wall of the inner rib member 13. and which thus limits the outward movement of the element 14 from the inside. The inner rib member 13 is dimensioned so that when the umbrella is shortened,
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
it receives in its hollow the outer rib element 15, while it is taken externally in the intermediate rib element 14 (fig. 9). In this way we can shorten the whale to a third of its entire length, in round numbers.
During contraction, the inner end of the outer rib member 15 meets the outer end of the inner rib member 13.
Thanks to the chamfer formed by the bend 16 of the inner end of the outer element 15, it is impossible for the two ends of the elements to abut one against the other, so that the elements slide into each other. without hindrance.
The rod 18, articulated on the inner end 16 of the outer rib member 15, is telescopically movable in a hollow rod 26. The guidance is provided by a sleeve 27 fixed to the outer end of the rod 26. The rod 26 is articulated at 28 on the main coulai 9. At the bent inner end 29 of the rod 18 is connected by means of a hinge 30 an auxiliary fork 31 whose inner end is hinged at 32 on an auxiliary slide. 33. An eyelet 34 formed on the auxiliary fork 31 between the articulations 30 and 32 serves to connect by articulation a link 35 whose opposite end is articulated at 28 on the main sliding member 9.
To fold up the open umbrella, (shown in solid lines in Fig. 1), the procedure is as with an ordinary umbrella by., Releasing the stop 8 and bringing the main slider 9 down along the handle to 'at the position indicated in dotted lines, in which the main slide is blocked by the stop 11 near the handle. During the folding, the pressure of the rib, exerted inward on the rod 18, results in the distance
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
between main stream 9 and auxiliary stream 33 increases, as with an ordinary pocket umbrella with rigid main forks supported by auxiliary forks. At the same time, the rod 18 enters the rod 26, so that the distance between the joints 17 and 28 decreases.
This distance which, when the umbrella is open, represents about two thirds of the length of the lengthened whale, as indicated in solid lines in fig. 1, is only about one third of the total length of the whale when the umbrella is folded up, as shown by the dotted lines. The rib itself only shortens during folding by a relatively small amount, which corresponds to the removal of tension from the fabric.
When you want to shorten the folded umbrella, all you have to do is bring the elements inside each other by pushing on the handle 10 and the nut 7. The three rib elements 13, 14 and 15 and the three handle elements then slide into each other until the position shown in FIG. 2. It is possible to obtain this noticeable shortening thanks to the fact that the distance between the articulations 17 and 28 is reduced in the folded position of the umbrella.
To put the shortened umbrella back into service, the frame is first brought from the position of pin 2 to the folded extension position by a simple pull exerted on both ends. Then, as with an ordinary umbrella, the slide 9 is released from the stop 11 and it is made to slide upwards on the handle. As a result, the ribs move away from the handle, and at the same time the link 35 forces the auxiliary fork 31 to withdraw the rod 18 from the rod 26 outwards, so that the distance between the articulation points 17 and 28 increases and reaches fina- -
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
also the length required for the open umbrella.
Once the umbrella is open, the elements 18 and 26 can no longer fit into each other because they are retained by the auxiliary fork 31 in cooperation with the rod 35.
The fabric 36 (fig.l) is fixed to the nut 7 and to the outer ends 37 of the ribs and, in addition, at 38, to the guide bracket 19. Consequently, when the umbrella is opened, the elements of ribs 13, 14 and 15 extend while at the same time stretching the fabric 36, just as when opening an umbrella with rigid main forks supported by auxiliary forks. This extension of the rib members, together with the tension of the fabric, is produced positively because during the unfolding movement the auxiliary runner 33 abuts against the nut 7 from below, so that the articulation point 32 s' immobilizes relative to the stick towards the end of deployment.
Instead of immobilizing with the aid of a stop the auxiliary slide 33 with respect to the handle during the deployment movement, so that the distance between the main streamer and the auxiliary streamer decreases, it is also possible to place the streamer. auxiliary below the main current and obtain by means of a spring, arranged between the two slides, that the distance between the two slides increases during the deployment movement. By arranging the elements 35 and 31 of the frame upside down in a corresponding manner, results are then obtained which are identical in principle to those obtained with the umbrella shown.
In the exemplary embodiment shown in Figs.
4 and 5, the umbrella handle is, as before, made up of three elements 1, 2 and 3. The ribs, articulated on the nut 7, are made up of two elements 39 and 40 which can -
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
telescope into each other. At the inner end 41 of the outer element 40 is connected by means of an articulation 42 a rod 43 which is connected by an articulation 44 to a kind of auxiliary fork 45 whose inner end is articulated. on an auxiliary slide 46.
A second runner 47, which will be called the main runner and which can be blocked on the handle in its two extreme positions using the usual springs 8 and 11, is connected by a second rod 48 to the rod 43 and by a rod 49 to the auxiliary fork 45. The second rod 48 and the rod 49 are connected by a common articulation 50 to the main slide 47. At its outer end, the rod 48 is connected by an articulation 51 to a slide 52 movable on the rod 43. The outer end of the link 49 is connected to an eyelet 53 which is disposed on the auxiliary fork 45 between the articulation 44 and the articulation 54.
An extension 55 of the inner end of the rod 43, which projects beyond the articulation 44 and which, in the deployed position shown in solid lines, bears against the auxiliary fork 45, constitutes a stop which prevents the joint 44 to bend from bottom to top.
In the deployed position, the rod 43 is retained by the auxiliary fork 45 which, in turn, is supported by the link 49. As a result, the articulation point 42 is also fixed and the ribs are held by the system. tem of rods in the deployed position.
When you want to close the umbrella, you release the stop 8 and move the main slide 47 up and down on the handle to finally block it using the stop 11.
At the same time, the articulation 44 folds up and down and the slide 52 slides outwards on the rod 43. As a result,
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
during folding, the distance between the joints 42 and 50 decreases more and more until the fully folded position shown in dotted lines, in which this distance is only slightly greater than the length of the rod 48. It occurs. thus an effect similar to that of the exemplary embodiment of FIG. 1.
In the example of execution of Figs. 6 and 7 the system of rods connecting the flow of the umbrella to the outer rib element is made up of a kind of Nuremberg scissors. The handle consists in this case of two elements 56 and 57, the element 56 of which carries the nut 7 of the umbrella as well as the spring 8 which serves to block the flow 68 called in this case the auxiliary flow, while on the handle member 57 are disposed the handle, not shown, and the stop spring 11 which retains the auxiliary slider 68 when the umbrella is folded. The whales are formed, much like the example of the F'igs. 4 and 5, by two elements 39 and 40 which can telescope into one another.
At the inner end 41 of the outer rib element 40 is connected by means of an articulation 42 a rod 58 whose inner end is connected by a hinge 60 to a rod 59, whose inner end is at¯ its turn connected by an articulation 61 to a second flow 62 which will be called main flow. The rod 58 carries between the articulations 42 and 60 an eyelet 63 to which is connected a rod 64 whose inner end is fixed by an articulation 65 to a rod 66 whose inner end is connected by an articulation 67 to the auxiliary slide. - liaire 68. The two rods 59 and 66 are interconnected by an articulation 69 like scissor branches.
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
When the umbrella is open, the two runners 62 and 68 are fixed to the handle, the runner 68 by the upper spring 8 of the handle and the runner 62 by a stop 70 which limits its upward movement. As a result, all the elements of the scissors, that is to say the rods 59, 66, 58 and 64 and hence the articulation point 42, are also fixed, so that the ribs are retained in the extended position. When, to fold the umbrella, the auxiliary slide 68 is moved up and down on the handle after having released the spring 8, the scissor elements tend to open under the pressure of the ribs folding inwards, so that the runners 62 and 68 separate until the folded position shown in dotted lines is established.
In this position, the rods constituting the Nuremberg scissors are juxtaposed. As a result, the distance between the articulation points 42 and 67 is notably smaller than when the umbrella is open, being equal, in substance, only to the length of the rod 58. We thus obtain again a effect similar to that of the embodiments of Figs. 1 to 3 and Figs. 4 and 5.
The distance between the joints 42 and 63 is determined by the consideration that, in the folded umbrella (Fig. 7), the joint 42 should be as close as possible to the nut 7 of the umbrella, while the joint 63 is naturally at a determined distance from the nut.
Otherwise, the folded umbrella can be shortened in the same way as the umbrella shown in Figs. 1 to 3.
To open the umbrella, we first establish the folded extension position by extending the frame and then, after having released the stop 11, we slide upwards, by hand, the slide 68. The whale. then move away
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
of the handle, so that the distance of the articulation points 42 and 67 increases again until the deployed position is finally established. During deployment, the flow 62 meets the stop 70, while the flow 68 continues to advance. As a result, the rib member 40 is positively pushed outward, so that the rib lengthens and the fabric stretches.
All of the embodiments described herein of the rod system connecting the umbrella runner to the outer rib member can be employed for ribs composed of a desired number of elements. In each case, the advantage is obtained that the faculty of the rib elements to retract telescopically into each other can be used entirely for the shortening of the frame, which is of particular interest when the umbrella comprises ribs. composed of three or more elements.
The stop spring serving to support the main slide 9 (Figs. 1 to 3 and 10) consists of a tongue 8 produced by punching in a sleeve 72 which is fixed by a needle hole 73 on the upper element. 1 of the handle and which comprises a bead 74 acting as a stop for the main runner 9 in order to limit the upward movement of the latter. At the bottom, on the side opposite to the tongue 8, the sleeve is cut obliquely at 75.
It is therefore clearly visible and perceptible to the touch. On the other hand, at its upper part 76 it is complete in order to provide the runner 9 with secure support. At its free end, the tongue 8 is cut horizontally and its edge 77 constitutes a secure support for the runner. At its lower end 78, through which it connects to the socket 72, the tongue 8 is narrow to have sufficient flexibility.
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
The umbrella handle constituted by the elements 1, 2 and 3, which is shown in detail in figs. It at 14, is shaped so that elements 1 and 3 cannot. not rotate with respect to each other so that the slot 79 of the slide 9 (Fig. 2) is located when folding the umbrella at the desired location around the periphery of the handle element 3 to allow passage at the stop 11. To prevent rotation, the intermediate element 2 of the handle has a groove or groove 90 (Fig. II) in which is engaged a projection 91 projecting inside, which is produced by pushing back of the wall of the element 1 of the handle. This projection 91 serves at the same time to limit the extension movement of the elements 1 and 2.
To this end, the groove 90 of the handle element 2 contains a stop consisting of a piece of metal wire 92, the angled end 93 of which is engaged in a hole 94 in the wall of the handle element 2 and whose end 95 meets the projection 91 when the handle is lengthened. This form of the stop has the advantage that even in the event of a sudden extension the elements are neither jammed nor deformed, as would easily happen if instead of the piece of metal wire 92 one used as stop a boss in the groove of the handle element 2.
The lower handle element 3 has two grooves 96 and 97; the groove 96 coincides with the groove 90 of the handle element 2. The actual guiding of the elements 2 and 3 on one another is provided by the second groove 97 in which protrudes a projection 98 shaped as the same as the projection 91. If for guiding the elements one used grooves 90 and 96 and omitted the groove 97, jamming would not be excluded, given the great length of the guiding surfaces. The guiding of the elements 2 and 3 by a second groove by means of a short projection 98 makes it possible to leave
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
between the grooves 90 and 96 enough play so that jamming does not occur.
In addition, there is thus provided the possibility of employing for elements 2 and 3 the same means of limiting the extension movement as for elements 1 and 2. Consequently, a piece of wire 99, fixed and housed in the same way as the piece of wire 92, serves for this purpose.
A locking against an unintentional contraction of the elements of the handle brought into the extension position is ensured by the stops 4 and 5, which can be released.
The lower stopper 5 mounted in the handle member 3 is attached to an elastic arm 100 which is secured to a pin 101 and which has an oblique slot 102 into which the arched upper end 103 of the handle is engaged. a double rod 104, the lower end of which is connected to a push button 105 (fig. 2) mounted in the handle 10. By pressing the button, the stop is thus removed and the blockage between elements 2 and 3 is removed The stopper 4 is integral with a lever 107 mounted on a pin 106 in the handle element 2, and this lever comprises a curved extension 108 and is subjected to the action of a spring 109 tending to maintain the handle. stop in the locked position.
When, after having released the stopper 5, the elements 2 and 3 are brought into one another, the upper edge of the handle element 3, chamfered at 110, meets the extension 108 and rotates towards the end. 'inside the lever 107 by releasing the stop 4 against the spring 109, so that the blocking is then also removed between the elements 1 and 2. When extending the frame, the stops 4 and 5 automatically return to the locked position.
To make as high as possible the degree of shortening obtainable by dividing the handle into
<Desc / Clms Page number 18>
three elements and also be able to fully use the part of the handle element 3, which carries the stop 11, the parts are shaped so that when the handle is shortened the stop 11 is released from the runner '' so that in the shortened frame, the slide is brought from its blocking position towards the handle as shown in FIG. 2.
The stop 11 is then located inside the handle element 1 nested over the element 3. The intermediate handle element 2 is dimensioned so that its lower edge 111 is located. above the appendix 11. In this way it is ensured that during the extension of the frame the stop 11 falls safely into the slot 79 of the slide 9. If in the shortened umbrella the stop 11 was at the 'Inside the intermediate element 2, it could happen that the element 2 is driven by the element 3 at the start of the extension and that the stop 11 passes in front of the slot 79 without entering it and establish the coupling with the whalebone elements, which must be extended at the same time. With the construction shown this possibility is excluded.
