Shovel with extendable handle.
The object of the present invention is a shovel, in particular for military use, the handle of which is telescopically extendable to pass from the reduced length of an ordinary portable shovel handle to a longer length, more suitable for earthmoving work.
According to the invention, the extensible handle of the shovel formed of two parts sliding one inside the other, comprises on one of the parts a cone clamping mandrel which makes it possible to block the other part in the extension of the first as rigidly as if they were integral together.
Advantageously, the cone clamping mandrel is formed at the free end of the tubular part of the handle connected to the shovel. It preferably consists of a crown of elastic claws topped with an internal cone nut, which screws onto a threaded part of the crown

to tighten the claws on the extension of the sliding handle in the tubular part. The claws can be formed by the very end, suitably cut, of this tubular part made of suitable metal and threaded to receive the nut.
The other part of the handle, on which it clamps the claws of the mandrel, may include at the location of the clamping a groove in which the claws take and which, preferably, is formed on a metal part. frictionally engaged in the mandrel to ensure the rigidity of the assembly of the two parts of the handle.
The appended drawing shows by way of example one embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows the shovel with the telescoped handle,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged-scale view, part in perspective and part in longitudinal section, of the clamping mandrel and related parts of the telescopic shovel handle, and FIG. -3 represents the shovel with the elongated handle, the clamping mandrel being shown in longitudinal section.
In these figures, 1 designates the shovel and 2 the steel bush of the shovel, the extension 3 of which forms the fixed tubular part of the handle, while the sliding part or extension 4 of the extensible handle is housed in the part 3 and finished with a knob 5.
Longitudinal slots 6 divide the free end of the tubular part 3 into a series of claws 7 arranged in a ring, at the base of which is provided in relief a screw thread 8. On this thread 8 is screwed a nut 9 whose upper part 10, conical on the inside, has an internal diameter less than the external diameter of the crown of claws 7. The set of claws and the nut constitutes a clamping mandrel intended to tighten the roller.

lanyard 4 of the handle to block it in relation to the tubular part 3.
The extension 4, which can be made of wood, has a ferrule 11 encircled with a groove 12 and terminated by a ring 13 which is calibrated so as to pass only with hard friction in the crown of claws 7. Between the groove 12 and the Ring
13, the end 11 is thinned so as not to hamper the approach of the claws under the action of the nut 9.
The handle of the shovel being telescope and the nut
9 tight (fig.l), the extension 4 is blocked by the claws 7 clamping the wood. To lengthen the handle, we start by partially unscrewing the nut 9; a pin 14 retained by the screw thread 8 prevents the nut from being completely removed.
The claws 7 are loosened elastically and the extension 4 can then be pulled out of the tube 3 until the ferrule 11 stops the movement by engaging in the mandrel.
Then screw the nut whose cone 10 tightens the claws
7 which enter the groove 12 rigidly blocking the. extension (fig. 3).
The device which has just been described has the advantage of simplicity and robustness. Without departing from the invention, it would however be possible to make modifications, for example to provide a mandrel made up of segments or other parts distinct from the handle and / or to arrange the mandrel so that the clamping takes place by expansion. of the mandrel in a tubular part of the shovel handle.
