<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

CLOSING DEVICE FOR BOXES AND OTHER SIMILAR CONTAINERS.
The present invention relates to a. closing device, the opening of which is obtained by pressure, for boxes or similar containers, of circular or oval shape, consisting of a body and a. cover ", independent of each other and each comprising a bottom and a side wall, the side wall of the cover fitting on the outer wall of the body of the box.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
opening these boots as well as other receptacles comprising this closing system is not easy and it is necessary to use makeshift tools or means.
According to the present invention, the bottom of the cover has inside ribs forming two support points located at a distance from each other of approximately 3/5 of the periphery; the cover can oscillate around these points on the edge of the side wall of the body, on which the opposite ends of the ribs rest at two points located at a distance from each other corresponding to about 2/5 of the periphery .
The two support points are advantageously formed by a peripheral internal rib of the bottom of the cover, which is interrupted over approximately 3/5 of the periphery or reduced on this part along an inclined plane and which thus allows the cover to oscillate when pressure is exerted on it in the area corresponding to the absence or lowering of the rib. The rib can be obtained in sheet metal covers by means of a groove extending approximately 3/5 of the circumference. If the support points are formed by ribs distant from one another, it is advisable to have a third rib between them, which prevents the oscillation of the cover in the direction opposite to that predetermined for the opening.
The wall of the element of the boot (body) intended to fit into the other (cover) has a section convex towards the outside so that the contact between the side walls of the two elements of the box takes place following a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
line or area about halfway up. walls. The support points above the contact line facilitate the removal of the cover from the rear side.
In order to allow the oscillation of the cover on the side where the pressure is to be exerted, the edge of the outer wall of the cover is inclined upwards on this side, or else the inner wall is devoid of a corresponding area. at the distance (approximately 2/5 of the periphery) between. two support points, with an ordinary annular outer rim at the height of the edge of the side wall of the cover. This existing peripheral rim can, if necessary ,. be interrupted, tilted or fully lowered and may be of any shape below the cover wall.
The outer wall is generally the most elastic and deformable and it therefore tends to widen under pressure along the line of connection of the support points and to tighten along a line perpendicular to the first. This drawback is reduced according to the present invention owing to the fact that the cover rests to oscillate not on the free edge of its side wall, but on a zone located near the bottom of the cover. In this way, although the side wall widens somewhat, the cover can move from its normal closed position.
In. view to facilitate opening, although the cover tends, under pressure., to restrict itself to the base 2. of the edge of the wall, the base of the inner edge of the

wall is slightly bevelled; this avoids increasing its resistance.
According to a modified embodiment of the invention the spacing of the support points during the opening can be prevented by a notch provided in the support zone of these points.
The box forming the object of this invention constitutes an article intended for low-cost mass production and being intended for widespread use. This boot can be made of plastic or sheet metal (for shoe polish, floor polish, chemicals) or else part of glass or porcelain and part of sheet or cardboard or other cellulose products (jars and flasks for medicinal or toilet creams, edibles and the like) or any other suitable material.
The accompanying drawings show some embodiments of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a box which can be made from plastic.
The box has a cover 1 formed by a cylindrical wall on the inside but slightly bevelled at the edge and by a bottom having an internal peripheral rib 4 which is flat over about 3/5 of the circumference and is lowered from the sides. points 2 following an inclined plane 3a. The cover rests on the edge 7 of the body of the box by means of this rib with slightly rounded edges. The wall of the cover presents on an arch
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
less than 180 of the edge (about 2/5 of the circle) and above the inclined plane 3a, an inclined plane 3b, thus forming ridges 2a and leaving uncovered a zone 11 of the wall of the body along this lower arc to about 1800.
When the cover 1 is pressed on the side of said arc, the ridges 2 acting as support points oscillate on the edge? body of the box and the cover assumes an inclined position on the body, as shown in fig. 2 and it can then be easily removed.
The body of the box is constituted by a bottom and a side wall having a convex outer part 6, the maximum circle of which (which must constitute the line of contact with the wall of the cover) is located approximately halfway up the box. The peripheral shoulder 9 is. at a distance from the cover such as to allow it to tilt.
The inclined plane 3a, near the fulcrum, forms a thin step.
According to Figure 2, the container has no peripheral shoulder below the lower edge of the side wall 5 of the cover, and it is therefore not necessary that aelui be cut in an inclined plane, the oscillation can also occur ... As shown in fig. 2, the lower edge of the side wall 5 of the cover is slightly bevelled on the inside in order to facilitate opening even in the event of a slight deformation of the cover wall.
FIG. 3 represents a box and its cover made of stamped sheet metal. The box does not have a peripheral shoulder
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
and the lower edge of the cover wall is therefore continuous. The rib 4 with inclined plane 3a is obtained by stamping the material of the cover. The side wall of the cover can be bent outwards and its free edge forms a bead to increase its bending resistance. The edge of the side wall of the body of the boot is reinforced by a bead 7.
The body of the boot shown in Figures 2 and 3 can naturally be provided with a peripheral shoulder, provided that the latter is at a distance from the cover such as to allow it to oscillate.
According to the embodiment shown in FIG. 4, the side wall 6, intended to fit into the cover, is attached to the body of the container by a stapling 12 at the end of a flange constituting the peripheral shoulder 9. In this case too, analogously to FIG. 3, the upper edge of the wall 6 is reinforced by a bead 7 and the rib 4 with an inclined plane 3a is obtained by stamping. The wall 5 of the cover is curved as has been described with reference to FIG. 3. Given the shoulder 9, the lower edge of the side wall of the cover has an inclined plane 3b.
Fig. 5 shows an inverse embodiment, the ribs constituting the support points 2 and their inclined plane 3a being arranged on the body of the box and the cover being simply cylindrical with a flat bottom. In this case we. actually has three ribs, two of which form the @
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
support points at a distance between them of about 2/5. of the periphery and the third, visible to the left of fig. 5, serves for better support of the cover in the closed position.
The lower edge of the cover wall being continuous in a. single plane, the annular shoulder 9 of the container has an inclined plane 3c in order to allow the oscillation of the cover around the bearing points 2 and the introduction of the lateral part of the cover in the notch 11.
The f i g. 6 shows, in interior view for greater clarity, a cover of the type shown in Figures 1 and 2; the peripheral rib 4 extends over approximately 3/5 of the periphery and the inclined plane 3a starts from the ends of the rib 4 thus forming the support points 2.
A second cover or diaphragm 13 can be applied to all of the boxes or containers shown between the box body and the main cover 1. In each figure of the drawing is shown a small cover corresponding to the type of box. Lids can be, depending on the requirements. sheet, cardboard, or other suitable material and be more or less convex in the center in order to be able to grasp it more easily and to withstand the pressure exerted on the center by the bottom of the cover 1, if necessary, using 'a dent 8 of the plastic covers. This pressure therefore extends over the entire periphery, although the cover 13 is already subjected to the pressure of the peripheral rib of the cover 1 over approximately. 3/5 of the periphery.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
If necessary, a rubber or mastic ring can be arranged in the peripheral groove of the second cover 13 in the usual manner for stapled boxes. The rings may be of semi-elastic or elastic partially or fully vulcanized rubber. For the closure of containers intended to contain substances which can damage rubber, sealants based on polymerized vinyl compounds of casein or other suitable substances can be used.
If cardboard is used, it can be coated or impregnated with paraffin.
The cover 13 shown in FIG. 5 has side or-eilles 14 to be able to grip the cover more easily. it goes without saying that the shape of the body of the box and of the cover below or above the area of the side walls relevant to the closing or opening of the box can be any.
