<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"Improvements to advancement devices
EMI1.1
9.U paper - Qans shorthand maohines called stenotypes
The subject of the present invention is improvements to the devices for advancing the paper in so-called "stenotype" stenographic machines, and more particularly to the mechanism intended to actuate the drum for winding the printed paper and the press roller. paper from the striking cylinder.
In known machines of this type, the balancer transmitting the oscillating movements of the universal bar to the snap-in of the winding drum, is ae-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
tioned by means of a rigid connecting rod which, theoretically, must be articulated on the balance in a poiht located on the articulation axis connecting the console to the frame of the machine.
But, in reality, it often happens that the lower end of the balance, in the rest position, is not placed exactly on the axis of articulation of said console, and when the latter is folded down on the control cover. the-machine under these conditions, it is possible that one of the organ is distorted and even broken. to remedy this drawback, the present invention provides between the universal bar and the balance a flexible member, but sufficiently resistant to transmit to the balance the oscillations of the universal bar.
Another characteristic of the device for advancing the paper according to the invention resides in a particular arrangement of the press roll * of the striking cylinder, arrangement which makes it possible to remove this roll by a simple press of a button, when it is This involves advancing the strip of paper a certain length without acting on the keyboard.
The accompanying drawing shows an embodiment of the improvements according to the invention.
Fig, 1 is a side elevation of the rear part of the machine with cutouts and partial sections *
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Fig, 2 is a similar view showing the members in another position.
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken along line IIIIII of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section along the same line, but showing the press roll "'paper in another position',
1 designates the frame of the machine carrying at the rear a yoke or corset 2 on which is articulated the console 3 which can tilt around the axis 4 to be brought to the working position shown in figs, 1 and 2 or to be folded forward on the hood, when the machine is folded up for transport.
At the upper end of the console 3 is rotatably mounted a winding drum 6 on which is automatically wound the strip of paper 7 as it is printed, the drum is actuated, in the direction of l winding (indicated by an arrow) by a snap-fit (not shown), itself actuated by a pinion 8 which meshes with a toothed sector 9 provided at the upper end of a balance 10 articulated at 11 on the console and whose lower end is provided with an eye 12, the center of which must theoretically coincide with the tilting axis 4 'of the hatch when the latter, for the folding of the machine, is folded back forward on the hood 5.
In reality, it often happens that, for any causes, maladjustment, wear, etc., the center of the eye 12 of the balance 10 does not coincide with the axis
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
4 tilting of the console and that it is at some distance in front of this axis. Since all the components: universal bar, connecting rod, balance, are rigid, it is easy to predict that they must undergo excessive forces and that one of them must be distorted or even broken if you force to fold the console onto the machine cover.
Fearing to avoid this drawback, the invention provides for the use of a flexible member, for example a coil spring 13, with contiguous turns, to connect the universal bar 14 to the eye 12 of the balance bar 10. This flexible member is chosen sufficiently resistant to compression to move the balance against the resistance to rotation of the winding drum 6, but weak enough to give way and flex when it is subjected to an abnormal force.
In the example shown, the coil spring 13 is force-fitted by its upper end on a rod 17 connected by an articulation 18 to the eye 12 of the balance 10 and its other end slides freely on a rod 15 connected by a joint 16 to the universal bar 14.
Fig, 1 shows this device in the rest position, where the center of the eye 12 is located approximately in axis 4; fig. 2 shows the position of the components in the event that a key on the machine has been pressed. In this case, the eye 12 is widely separated from the axis 4. However, a cam 19 makes it possible to lock the balance 10 in this position, and
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
it is possible that the operator, forgetting that the balance is blocked, wishes to fold the console back onto the bonnet of the machine without first erasing this cam.
The only effect that can result is that the operator will have to apply a greater force than when all the components are in the rest position, but the spring 13 will yield and none of the components involved will be subjected to an excessive force so that any danger of deterioration or breakage is thus eliminated. This device can also work in a plane different from that of the balance 10. Finally, when the universal bar hits the end of the spring, the noise is distributed over the turns.
This command is therefore particularly silent,
In stenography machines of this category, the paper web 7 is applied against the impression cylinder. 20 by a pressure roller
21, rotatably mounted in a bracket 22 pivoting on the printing unit 23 in which are housed and guided the character-carrying levers (not shown), the roller 21 is pressed against the cylinder. of, strikes 20 by the action of a spring 24, one end of which is hooked on the bracket 22 while the other comes to rest against a stop
25 of the printing block.
According to the invention, the caliper 22 can be lowered by a rod 26, which is guided vertically in a hole made in the axis.
27 on an o8té of the striking cylinder 20, and which carries at its upper end a key 28 which is @
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
can push against the action of a compression spring 29, interposed between this tomche ot the axis 27. When this key is pressed the rod 26 is lowered on one of the arms of the caliper 22 and made pivoting the latter downwards around its articulation which moves the pressure roller 21 away from the striking cylinder, thus freeing the strip of paper which can then be moved forward or backward rapidly without effort and without risking tearing it.
Of course, without departing from the principle of the invention, it is possible in any suitable manner to modify the shape and the arrangement of the members which constitute the device described above.
