<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Paddle wheel thruster, in particular for nautical vehicles.
The present invention relates to a paddlewheel thruster, in particular for nautical vehicles, the axes of the blades of which are entirely or substantially parallel to the axis of the thruster and the blades of which all immerse in water. at the same time and perform oscillating movements at the rate of the rotational movement of the propellant, and. its purpose is to direct the cs cillations of the blades so that they adapt as well as possible

to the relative current in the vicinity of the positions in which there is no propulsion.
By "positions of the blades in which there is no propulsion" is meant the positions in which the forces exerted by the blades on the flowing medium do not produce a resultant directed in the opposite direction to that of the flow. walking, that is to say do not produce any force capable of helping to propel the vehicle. Depending on the nature of these paddle wheels, this is the case in the vicinity of the two lateral points of the circle of the blade, while the most intense propulsion forces are exerted in the vicinity of that of the diameter of the circuit of the dawn which is in the direction of travel.
As the vanes move in the opposite direction to that of the current (forward) during their revolution on one side of the circle of the vanes, and in the direction of the current (back) on the other half of the circle of the impeller , a corresponding distinction is therefore made between the "forward half" and the "reverse half", for the circle of the blades. As the relative speed is small, the conditions which exist in the reverse half of the vane circle play only a secondary role, so that it is practically sufficient to consider the forward half.
However, careful studies of the current conditions for thrusters of this type have shown that the streams of current, depending on the shape of the ship and the current conditions in the wake, are not at all parallel to the direction of travel, and that on the contrary, they deviate considerably from this position. There is, in particular in the current bundle, a narrowing which has the effect that the points of contact of the external current streams with the circle or circuit of the blades are not on the normal

walking, but that they move away from it by making a certain angle with it.
This consequently results in a poor adaptation of the blades to the current streams for the thrusters in which the tangential position of the blades on their circle is reached at the extreme points of that of the diameters of the circle which is perpendicular to the direction of travel. This is why, according to the invention, one deliberately deviates from such kinematics and the tangential position of the blades relative to their circle is transferred to the point where the external current stream is also tangent to the circle of the blades. .
As these conditions must be taken into account on the forward half of the circle of the wheel, as already stated above, while they can be neglected on the reverse half because of the low relative speed which exists at this location, according to the invention, rules for the position of the blades, taking into account the configuration of the current, will only be indicated for the forward half of the wheel.
In the single figure of the attached drawing, the circle 8 of the vanes of a paddle wheel serving as a propeller and whose direction of rotation is indicated by the arrow 11 has been shown. The current 13 passes through the center 0 of the wheel and it is substantially parallel and opposite to the direction of travel 14. The current streams shown in the figure are the result of recent experiments.
As we have already said above, they are not parallel to the direction of travel; they present on the contrary in their beam, in particular on that of the sides of the circle of the blades where the movement of the blades is opposed to the direction of the current, a narrowing which has the effect that the points of contact of the streams with the circle of the blades. blades are found in the posterior half of this circle. this phenomenon is therefore contrary to what we assumed until now, and what would be the case for current streams pa-

parallel, that the direction of the threads ae current would touch the circle of the blades on its two lateral points, that is to say on a diameter of the circle perpendicular to the direction of the current (what is called the normal to running).
The normals for the different positions of the blades must intersect, for the anterior half and the posterior half of the impeller, in a zone which is on the transverse diameter 2 indicated by the circle 17. In the zone where the relative current is the smallest, that is to say approximately in the middle of the reverse half of the circle of the wheel, half of which the importance is relatively small for the lateral forces and the efficiency, we will suppose that the point of contact of the external current thread with the circle of the blades is at 18, while on the opposite side the external current thread touches the circle of the blades at point 3.
Tests have shown that the angle at center 4 within which point 3 may be located can reach up to + 25 on either side of normal 6 to walking depending on the position of the current threads which are tangent to the circle of the blades. To take into account the efficiency and the risks of cavitation, the difference between the normal 1 at the blades and the radius passing through the point 3 must not exceed 15 on each side within the limits of this angle. In the center.
The condition which has just been indicated relative to the angle in question does not depend only on the kinematics of the ray; on the contrary, it depends more on the sum of all those of the factors of the course with the aid of blades which determine the direction of the current and the shape of the ship, a shape which also includes that of the bow and by which the current configuration is determined.
It is advisable to apply the law of motion which has just been indicated for the blades to all the operating states of the impeller, that is to say for all the positions of the blade.
