<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"Obtontion process, with the convector, of purified steel"
Steels usually produced in converters need high quality steels for processing. to undergo one or more subsequent purification treatments, intended to lower their tone in elements which would be harmful to the quality of the steel, in particular phosphorus, sulfur and oxygen. Also, many applications have been made of processes commonly called "duplex", in which the steel produced in a converter is transferred to a Martin or electric furnace in which the purification treatments are carried out.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In each of these processes, either a complete dephosphorization and deoxidation treatment and, optionally, desulphurization, or, depending on the case, deoxidation alone are carried out in an oven. Each of these processes leads, compared to the usual processes for the production of steel using the converter alone, on the one hand a very significant increase in initial installation costs, relative to the ton produced, on the other hand a very serious increase in cost of production per tonne.
We know, in fact, that the installations necessary to produce a ton of steel in the Martin furnace or the electric furnace, even if the metal is charged in the liquid state, are much higher than the corresponding expenditure for the converters and , that in addition, the processing costs per ton, under the same conditions) are much higher in the Martin furnace and in the electric furnace than in the converter.
On the other hand, it has been put into practice in recent years, very rapid purification processes for steels, processes which are applied outside the converter or the Martin furnace, and which are carried out without the addition of external heat. , for example by bringing into intimate contact, or by violent stirring, the metal and a slag suitable for carrying out the desired purification operation.
But when it comes to carrying out several successive purification operations by the processes in question, that is to say outside the converter or the furnace, operations which require slags different from those commonly used in converters or furnaces, the metal risks undergoing significant cooling during these operations.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
so much, which has drawbacks for the casting and the quality of the metal. This cooling occurs above all in installations which do not have sufficient mechanical equipment to be able to carry out such manipulations very quickly.
The present invention makes it possible to remedy these various drawbacks by carrying out a process for purifying steels with regard to impurities which cannot be eliminated by the action of a single slag or of a single operation at the converter and this without correlative increase in initial installation costs per tonne produced and without an increase in the cost of production per tonne.
This process essentially consists in carrying out the dephosphorization by means already known, either in the converter itself, if it is a basic converter, or in a pocket, if the converter is basic or acid, then in transferring the steel in an acid converter, which may be the same as that used to make Bessemer steel, then cause the steel to act, in this acid converter, a sufficient quantity of a substance whose oxide has a high heat of formation so that, by giving wind for a very short time, there is released, by the combustion of the body thus added, a sufficient quantity of heat to bring the steel to the high temperature necessary to cast it either directly, or after a subsequent deoxidation operation.
This compensates for the cooling due to the dephosphorization treatment and the transfer of the steel. After which, the steel is optionally deoxidized by any known means.
Among the bodies which may be used in
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the acid converter for raising the temperature, silicon should be mentioned in particular. It will preferably be added in the form of a silico alloy, for example ferro-silicon.
Optionally, a certain proportion of manganese may be added at the same time, in order to obtain better protection of the steel against oxidation due to blowing. Then, for example, silico-manganese will be added.
The silicon can be added to the steel, either in the acid convector itself, or in the transfer ladle to this converter. Particularly in the case where the dephosphorization is not carried out in the ladle.
The addition elements which may have to be introduced into the steel, for example nickel, may be added in the acid converter.
Here, by way of nonlimiting example, two ways of operating, on the one hand with the acid converter, on the other hand with the basic converter.
A steel, obtained in an acid converter and containing about 0.1% phosphorus, is poured violently into a ladle containing a basic and oxidizing slag, liquid or solid. In the latter case, the slag may either have been formed in advance and be in the solid state, or be prepared as a mixture of the constituent elements of the slag. The violent pouring operation is carried out after having previously eliminated, or by retaining in the convertissour, the acid slag therefrom. By this operation, which is known per se, a dephosphorus steel is obtained.
In this ladle, the steel is transferred, removing or retaining the dephosphorizing slag, into the con-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
acid converter from which it was just poured, or in another acid converter. Is then added to the steel, for example 0.4% by weight of silicon in the form of silicon or ferro-silicon, as well as 0.6% of manganese to protect the steel against oxidation. Then blown for a very short time, for example one minute, which has the effect, by the combastion of the silicon and, where appropriate, of a part of the manganese, to warm the acior strongly.
It is then possible, if necessary, to bring the steel, by known means, to its final composition and to carry out, if it is deemed useful, a more or less extensive deoxidation by the usual or known methods, in particular by violent stirring with a slag previously melted fluid and poor in oxides do for. We thus obtain, in an extremely short time, at the cost of immobilization, for a very short time, of an acid converter, without the need for a Martin furnace or an electric steel furnace, an equivalent steel to the one previously obtained by "duplex" processes, converter - Martin oven or convortissour - electric oven.
In the case of a basic convertor, the process is similar, but in this case, instead of carrying out the dephosphorization in a pocket by bringing more or less intimate contact with a slag or dephosphorising substances, it is possible, if necessary, to obtain this dephosphorization directly in the basic converter, cola either at the cost of a very strong supercooling of the steel, or, preferably, by eliminating the Thomas slag after a first soufflago, then loading a second dephosphorization slag and giving again the go laying for a few moments, according to an already known process, after which the steel is transferred
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
thus dephosphorus, in the acid converter, after having eliminated or retained the scorio of the basic converter, and one adds,
as in the case described above for the acid converter, silicon or other body of which the oxide has a high heat of formation, the surplus is carried out as was said above with regard to the operation of the acid converter . The silicon could in co case be added not in the acid converter, but in the ladle used for the transfer from one converter to the other.
