"NEW PROCESS FOR VENTILATION OF TURBO-ALTERNATOR ROTORS"
It is known that the windings of the rotors of turboalternators generally consist of conductors arranged in grooves or notches milled in the mass of the rotor.
These conductors are insulated from the walls of the grooves by means of insulating tubes.
The calories released by the Joule effect in the windings pass through the thickness of the insulating tubes, enter the rotor mass, from where they are removed by means of a cooling fluid.
@ It is easy to understand that with this cooling method, the heating of the conductors can be important, because the heat released must pass through the thickness of the insulating tubes.

The invention relates to a new method of ventilating rotors, according to which the windings are brought into direct contact with the cooling fluid.
To facilitate understanding of the invention, the accompanying drawing shows an exemplary embodiment.
Fig. i is a partial longitudinal section of a turbo-alternator.
Fig. 2 is a cross section along the axis A B of FIG. 1.
In these two figures the same reference numbers and letters designate the same elements or organs.
The windings, in each groove, are divided into two coils 1 and 2, separated by an interval 3 (see fig. 2).
The air will circulate between the coils i and 2, thanks to the means described below, which is one of the main characteristics of the invention:
The rotor, instead of being, over its entire length, of radius R (see fig. I) bears in certain places protrusions p so that in these places the rotor has a radius R 'greater than R.
Due to the difference between the radii R and R ', there is a driving pressure which allows the cooling air to enter the gap between coils and to leave it as indicated by the arrows 4, removing, due to the fact that it is in direct contact with the windings, a large part of the calories released therein.
It should be noted that, in the bottom of the notch, the drawing shows a channel 0 which contributes to ventilation by allowing the passage of cooling air, as indicated by the arrows. This channel can, without compromising the efficiency of the new process, be eliminated.
The stator 5 can be designed such that its cooling spacers are arranged so that the air inlets in the air gap and the air outlets from this air gap coincide with the air inlet and outlet directions in the air gap.

rotor, as shown in fig. 1.
The stator 5 may have steps as shown in fig. 1, so as to maintain a uniform value & air gap.
The value of the difference between the radii R 'and R, which gives the driving pressure and hence the flow, can be important in modern turbo-generators, because of the large value 1 of the air gap normally admitted.
