<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Improvements to the hulls of mechanically propelled boats.
This invention relates to the hulls of mechanically propelled boats.
It is recognized that a significant proportion of the resistance to the advancement of boats and canoes, and in particular of craft built to navigate at high speeds, is due to surface friction. In order to reduce this friction, boats have been proposed whose hull comprises in its lower surface steps arranged transversely, so that at high speeds the water is not in contact with one or more parts of the underside, but the use of such craft for practical purposes is limited because of the difficulties inherent in establishing a sufficiently
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
sturdy and the inability to move this boat at high speed in rough water.
An object of the present invention is to improve the construction of abnormally shaped hulls for high speeds, by further reducing the extent of the lower surface in contact with water during high speed navigation. To this end, according to the invention, provision is made (a) to provide these boats, on each side of the keel or center line, with two or more ridges or chines forming between them an angle in side elevation and remaining constantly submerged at their rear ends, (b) to hollow out the sides and / or exterior surfaces of the boat above the ridges slightly towards the inside of the profile, and (c) to cut off or embed part of the middle of the bottom of the hull, about half the length or less, from stern to bow,
so as to form a cavity of any desired shape.
In the attached drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a hull according to the invention,
Fig. 2 is a half plan view from below,
Fig. 3 is a cross-section with a couple marten, along line III-III of FIG. 1, Figs. 4 to 8 are half-sections made respectively along lines IV-IV to VIII-VIII of FIG. l, and
Fig. 9 a bottom plan view of the aft end of a hull, showing a variant.
Referring to the appended drawing, it can be seen that the hull comprises a median surface 1, the halves of which located on either side of the keel or median line are identical, with or without a defined physical junction, and that on both sides other of this median surface there is provided a surface @
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
exterior 2 and a border 3 The junction of the median surface 1 with the external surfaces 2, and of the external surfaces 2 with the borders 3 is shaped so as to constitute acute angles, and the lower edges of the external surfaces 2 and the lower edges of borders 3 are slightly hollowed out towards the inside of the profile respectively with respect to the median surface 1 and with respect to the external surfaces 2,
these connections constituting arêtes.ou chines 4 and 5 on either side of the boat.
It can also be seen that the middle surface 1 is set back from point VI to point VIII so as to form a cavity 6.
It should be noted that with a boat having a hull like that described above, the water displaced upwards and outwards by the lower part of the surfaces 1 when the boat is moving forward at its normal speed does not follow acute angles 4 and 5, so that parts of the lower outer surfaces 2 and of the planks 3 of the hull, which are in contact with the water when the craft is at rest, do not remain in contact with the water when the boat is advancing at its normal speed, thus reducing the resistance due to surface friction; similarly, the part of the middle surface 1, which constitutes the bottom of the cavity 6, is not in contact with the water when the boat is moving at its normal speed, thus further reducing the resistance due to friction superficial.
It can also be seen that the water displaced by the median surface 1 when the craft is moving at its normal speed must come into contact with the rear parts of the outer surfaces 2, so that it is used to support the rear. of the boat and to reduce the surface friction on the exterior surfaces 2, given that an oriented movement
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
forward is already imprinted on the water displaced by the middle surface 1, while the swirling of the aerated water further decreases the surface friction below the outer surface 2.
In addition, it can be seen that the boat remains supported by the water almost from bow to stern, at all speeds, and that the dynamic lift due to the movement is evenly distributed over surfaces 1 and 2, so to ensure the maintenance of longitudinal and transverse stability at any speed, without any tendency to "pitch" or pivot longitudinally about a point such as the main "plane" of a trans "stepped" hydroplane or hydrofoil - versal, or to "give band" on either longitudinal half of the lower surface as with an ordinary V-shaped hull hull when driven at high speed, while the forward part or "fine or sharp bow" prevents "beating" or violent shocks suffered by other hulls with less tapering bow.
In the variant shown in Fig. 9, the hull comprises on each side of the boat two ridges or bilges 7 and 8 between the keel or center line and the outer ridge or bilge 9, and the cavity 6 widens by degrees and extends, in the transverse direction, over a part of its length, between the inner ridges 7 situated outermost, while over the remainder of its length it lies between the inner ridges 8 .
In constructions comprising on either side, between the center line and the outer ridge 9, more than two ridges, the cavity 6 comprises two or more different degrees of widening along its length.
Returning again to figs. 3 to 8, it will be observed that the position of the outer surfaces 2 varies all along @
