<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Piston for internal combustion engines.
Often, the proper functioning of the pistons of internal combustion engines is compromised by corrosion and jamming or jamming of the pistons or its segments, jamming caused either by pressure or by burning of the metal; to this drawback is added excessive consumption of fuel and oil and excessive wear of the metal. It is known that the upper part of a piston is exposed to more rapid wear than the body of the piston where a longitudinal slot determines a certain elasticity. In order to prevent deterioration of the upper part, closed rings have already been applied, perfectly anchored in the body of the piston or inserted in the bottom of the latter and fixed there by a retaining plate. Burn protection rings and piston rings have also been proposed to protect the edge of the piston.
But in all these systems, we have
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
neglected to protect the guide edge of the piston from the action of fire, so that the known devices cannot give really satisfactory results; moreover, if one uses protective rings analogous to piston rings, the seal will always leave. to desire. Finally, in all known pistons, it is impossible to obtain uninterrupted lubrication at the guide part of the piston.
The piston for internal combustion engines, according to the present invention, does not have any of these drawbacks; in this piston is provided a protective ring resiliently surrounding the upper part of the piston, the diameter of which is smaller than that of the body, this ring constituting at the same time a lubricating ring. The guiding of the piston begins below this protective and lubricating ring, so that the parts ensuring the guiding are protected from the combustion gases. In addition, said elastic ring constitutes a perfectly sealed closure, even when the wear is already very pronounced; the engine will therefore always give its maximum efficiency.
In order to prevent the protective ring from knocking, it can be held in place by means of an interposed annular spring. Although, thanks to the well-suited arrangement of the protective and lubricating ring, the bottom of the piston can expand without difficulty, this elasticity could be further increased by providing, between the body and the head of the piston, two transverse slots in II practiced opposite one another.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, some embodiments of the invention.

Fig. 9 is a section through a piston fitted with the protection and lubrication ring, according to fig. 4 to 8.
Fig. 10 is a top view of an intermediate spring, of which
Fig.ll represents a sectional part, and that
Fig.12 shows in cross section along the line E-F of Fig.10 and on a larger scale.
Fig.l to 3 show the simplest embodiment of the new piston. Two more piston rings a are used there, as well as the slot b as is usually provided in the piston body. The novelty lies in the fact that we practice, in the head of the piston c, two transverse slots d, d ', parallel to each other and interconnected by vertical slots d2 (see fig.2). A certain elasticity is thus also achieved in the upper part of the piston.
As shown in fig.l, the diameter of the piston bottom h is smaller than that of the body; annular groove f receives the protective ring shaped in the manner of known elastic piston rings. The edge of the bottom h of the piston may be formed by a ring i of a material harder than that of the piston (fig. 3), which prevents the ring from penetrating, during operation of the engine, into the bottom of the piston. Due to the fact that this edge i of hard material is not in contact with the wall of the cylinder, no abnormal wear can occur there.
In the bottom of the piston, there are provided lubrication channels j leading to the annular groove f, the lower edge k of which is bevelled. The protective ring g comprises an annular lubrication groove m connected by means of vertical grooves n, to the annular lubrication channel o formed by the edge
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
beveled k (fig. 3). In this way, the oil circulates in the grooves m, n and determines an abduction of the heat and thus the cooling of the upper part of the piston, since the fresh oil arrives there continuously; will therefore not be able to carbonize. The lubrication channel o is particularly important since it always contains oil, which ensures instant lubrication when starting the engine.
In the piston shown in fig.9, the protection ring is provided with two annular grease grooves m, connected by vertical grooves n, to the grease channel o. The grooves n can be offset with respect to each other. In this protective ring, the oil circulation in the grooves m, n is even more efficient than in the piston according to fig. 1-3. In the piston according to fig.9, the lubrication channels lead to an annular channel provided in the head of the piston and where a spring p is housed. On the inside, the protection ring has two annular grooves g ', g2 (see fig. 7). The upper groove g 'is made in a tenon 1 formed by one of the ends of the ring, in a semi-circle on the inner side (fig.5).
The groove g 'constitutes in the tenon 1 two horizontal sealing surfaces 2, 3; at the other end of the ring is provided a recess 4, in the shape of a semi-circle and serving as a guide for the tenon 1 (fig. 6). The recess 5 in the end of the ring (Fig. 8) and the round sealing parts 6,7, as well as two horizontal sealing surfaces 8 which constitute the extension of the surfaces 2 and 3 are the result. The surfaces 2, 3 and 8 come to rest, from above and from below, against the upper annular rib h 'of the bottom of the piston.
Thanks to the upper annular groove g 'of the protective ring, not only is it achieved a sealed application of the latter against the rib h' of the bottom of the piston, but also flames and gases are prevented from passing through the closing device, even in the event that the two ends of the ring g are not tightly tight against each other, given
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
that then the combustion gases act against the tenon 1 which does not let them pass. These gases will not be able to pass through the recess 5 either since the latter is covered by the rib h 'of the bottom of the piston and that, moreover, the recess 5 is not wider than the rib h', so that the surfaces 2, 3 and 8 ensure, even when the ring expands, a foolproof seal.
There is sufficient clearance between the protective ring and the ribs on the bottom of the piston, so that the bottom of the piston can expand normally, without the protection ring being tightened dangerously against the cylinder wall. On the outside, the seal is provided by the latter (fig. 9).
While in the embodiment according to fig. 3, the insert ring i, of hard material, prevents the protective ring g from bumping, the variant shown in fig. 9 provides, for the same purpose, a wavy circular spring ±, in two parts (fig. 10) each of which is covered with two parts r, r ', in the shape of a trough which, by means of their curved rear edge, cover the spring while the outer edge is rounded (fig. 12), so that the protection ring can, through its groove g2, be slipped without difficulty above the annular spring (fig. 9) intended to retain the protection ring. The lubrication channels j lead directly to the annular spring and communicate, via the latter, with the lubrication channel o.
Each part of the annular spring can be connected in a non-rigid manner to the parts r, r ', by means of pins t carried by the part r and corresponding bushings fixed to the part r'.
The new piston saves considerable amounts of oil, fuel and prevents metal wear.
