<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
en partie les roues porteuses, et s'adaptant à la courbure de ces organes ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
cyclette.
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Device to prevent theft or unauthorized use of cycles, motorcycles and other vehicles Il.
To prevent theft and unauthorized use of cycles and motorcycles, a sliding device has already been proposed, provided with an obvious coating and an inscription, which can be adjusted and stopped in different positions on one of the mudguards that surround
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
partly the load wheels, and adapting to the curvature of these components;
of the authorized use of the vehicle, the sliding part was brought to a position relative to the mudguard in which it is invisible from the outside, while at times when the vehicle was not used and left without being supervised, the said room was placed in an obvious position, where it attracted the attention of passers-by to the fact that the person who, despite this, was operating the vehicle, was obviously using it without being authorized to do so.
Hitherto known devices of this type, however, present serious drawbacks. Apart from the fact that two superimposed sliding parts, of different colors, were arranged in an envelope consisting of a bottom plate and a cover plate, which had to be fixed to the surface of the mudguard of so that either sliding part remained visible through a very narrow viewing window in the cover plate of the enclosure, and the construction of the device as a whole was therefore quite complicated, a another disadvantage was that the moving parts of this device were exposed to all the influences of rain, frost, dust, and in limited proportions also of road mud.
As a result and by the possibility of access by unauthorized persons, for example playing children, the long-term operation and duration of this system were considerably compromised.
In winter, by severe frost, the slippery parts were stopped by the formation of ice, and they could not work in a sufficiently safe way in their envelope. On the other hand, the thief, by sticking dark paper on the gaze, or covering it with a cloth
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
dark, could easily render the safety elements obscure and thus completely miss the purpose of the device. For these reasons, the known systems have not gained importance in practice.
The present invention relates to a device characterized in that a single sliding part forms the core of an enveloping body with a closed profile, therefore hollow, curved in relation to the profile of the tire of the vehicle wheel; the said enveloping body, although itself acting as a mudguard, entirely houses, during the use of the cycle, the sliding part against humidity and against mud, and it is provided with means which cooperate with the sliding part, and which not only prevent this part from being moved from its operating position by unauthorized persons, but which also prevent the wheel carrying the cycle from turning, and thus make it impossible to use it. tion of the latter.
The object of the invention may in practice give rise to a large number of embodiments. The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, an embodiment which is as simple as possible.
Figure 1 is a side view of the front load wheel of a bicycle, the sliding part mounted in the sheet metal mudguard being shown in the service position.
Figure 2 is a similar side view showing the sliding part in the covered or rest position.
Figure 3 is a cross section of the fender plate according to Figure 1.
FIG. 4 is a section through the mudguard of the front wheel fitted with the new device.
FIG. 5 is a front view of the closing device with which the front end of the slide is provided.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The mudguard plate 1 of the front load wheel 2 is in its entire length or only on a sufficient part to cover the slide 3, made in the form of an envelope, that is to say that in this part of its length. - thickness, it constitutes in section a hollow body, approximately profiled in the form of a U. The two side branches 1a of this casing extend radially in the direction of the axle or axis 4 of the wheel, in a slightly greater proportion than that of use with the ordinary execution of the mudguard plates, by covering the side faces of the bandage.
In the hollow thus formed of the mudguard plate 1, 1a, the slide 3 can move and lock, and it is obviously bent in length, in the form of a segment corresponding to the curvature of the guard plate. -mud, so as to be able to be pulled forward and backward with respect to the mudguard, around axis 4 as the center. This ooulisse is provided, in a manner known per se, with a coating of a color that is obvious, for example a bright red color.
It is also possible, on the outer surfaces of the runner 3, or on the outer surfaces of its wings or side branches 1a, as well as on the dorsal surface, to apply appropriate inscriptions, for example "Stop! Thief:" .
In ordinary times, that is to say as long as the legitimate user of the bicycle uses it to ride, the slide 3 occupies the rest position shown in FIG. 2 and in which it remains hidden in the mudguard, inside the casing 1, with the exception of a small end 3a at the front end, so that it does not stand out particularly, because the said small end in projection outside the casing 1 is provided with a coating of a color which corresponds to that of the bi-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
bicycle.
This front end 3a of the slide 3 is provided with a lock 5 shown on a larger scale in FIG. 5.
The lock box 5 carries two bolts 6 and 6a which are mounted therein so as to be able to turn on the axes
7 and 7a. In the closed position, the two bolts 6 and 6a form a handle which, as shown in solid lines in Figure 5, completely embraces the tire 2; one of the latch ends, for example that of the latch, may be provided with a tenon 6b which, in the closed position, enters a corresponding recess in the end of the latch 6.
On each of the axes 7 and 7a is mounted a toothed wheel 8 and 8a. The two wheels 8 and 8a mesh with one another, so that when one of these wheels is imparted a rotating movement, for example to the wheel 8, by making it rotate in the direction indicated by arrow 9a (FIG. 5), the two bolts, 6 and 6a necessarily open by taking the position indicated in dotted lines, while with a rotating movement of wheel 8 in the opposite direction, they. come to occupy the closed position.
The rotating movement of the locks 6 and 6a can be determined by another pair of toothed wheels 10 and 10a.
The wheel 10 is placed on the axis 7, and it is joined rigidly with the toothed wheel 8 by whatever suitable means. The toothed wheel 10a, which can rotate about the axis 11, surrounds a cylinder or is attached to a disc 12, provided with a keyhole. When the key, passing through a hole made in the front wall of the lock box 5, is introduced into the cylinder or into the disc 12, and it is turned to the right or to the left, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
cylinder or disc 12 rotates in the same way, and this rotating movement is transmitted by the wheels 10a, 10, 8, Sa to the bolts 6, 6a.
It goes without saying that the cylinder or the disc 12 is subjected to the action of known movable linings and of a stop spring, as is customary in locks (these elements not being shown specifically in the figure. present case), so that these elements stop the two bolts both in their closed position and in their open position.
So that it is possible to pass the slide 3 from its rest position to its visibility position, the back of this part must be provided with a slot 3a giving passage to the brake rod 14 which is placed in a conical manner. - bare in front of the fork 15 of the front wheel 2 and ends with a brake shoe 16. The slot 3a must obviously extend from the place where the brake rod 14 passes, until in the vicinity of the inner end of the slide 3. It goes without saying that the two back plates of the mudguard 1, la are provided with openings at the place where the brake rod 14 passes, to allow this rod to move in height.
When the cyclist wants to leave his machine and protect it against theft or against unauthorized use, he pulls the slide 3 from the rest position, shown in figure 2, to the visible position shown in figure 1, and by inserting a key in the lock box 5 and turning the key, it brings the locks 6 and 6a to the position in which they completely embrace the tire 2 of the front wheel, in any place located between two neighboring spokes , as shown in figures 1 and 5. The wheel between the spokes of which the bolts pass is thus prevented from turning.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
In order further to prevent the slide 3 from being pushed back into its hidden position. ,, a second safety means in the form of a small cylindrical lock 13 has been arranged at an advantageously chosen point of the mudguard 1, 1a. is welded to the mudguard so that it cannot be removed with pliers or by tearing off. This second safety device can also be actuated by a key which brings a bolt 13a to the stop position, so that this bolt passes with its inner end through an opening made in the dorsal part of the slide 3, to small distance from the inner end thereof.
In figures 1 and 2, the opening in question is marked 13b, and placed in the hidden end of the slide 3.
If now - the owner having left the vehicle after having secured it as described above, that is to say by pulling the slide 3 forward, to the safe position -, someone was trying to get hold of the vehicle while carrying it, such actions would very quickly draw the attention of passers-by to the unauthorized abduction, and cause any police officer to stop the thief in time and thus prevent the theft of the vehicle. vehicle.
