<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Mounting device for class B radio amplifiers.
Amplifier tubes whose operation corresponds to the point located in the lower angle of the characteristic are known. These amplifiers have been called class B radio amplifiers. By mounting in opposition two amplifiers of this type operating from this In this way, it is possible, by advantageously choosing the points corresponding to their operation and their characteristics, to amplify the currents in both directions starting from the zero axis.
In amplifiers of this type, difficulties are encountered due to the fact that the currents originating from the anode side are not faithfully restored, since the characteristic does not include a sharp angle at its lower end, but on the contrary a progressive curvature, which gives rise to deformations.
These deformations are remedied by the invention, which consists of inserting in the gate circuit of amplifier B a

one-way rectifier, which suppresses negative voltage amplitudes applied to it. In the case of opposing amplifiers, of course, two one-way rectifiers are used.
The invention is described below with the aid of a few examples.
On the drawing :
Fig.l is a graph explaining the operation of amplifiers B; FIG. 2 is a graph explaining the deformations which occur with these amplifiers; fig. 3 is a graph of the operation of devices according to the invention; Fig.4 is an assembly diagram corresponding to Fig.3.
Suppose that amplifier B is used to amplify the sidebands of a transmitter. By tuning the anode circuit, the fundamental wave can be completely re-filtered, so that the applied voltages cause proportional current variations in the anode circuit.
Fig. 1 shows the conditions existing for an amplifier B of this type. The point P corresponding to the operation is located in the lower angle of the ideal characteristic K. The side bands S 'are transmitted to the grid of the stage considered and once amplified collected faithfully in the anode circuit . In a device of this type, the quiescent current corresponding to the non-modulation state is zero. ! .- But the real characteristic of an amplifier tube does not have a sharp angle at its lower end, as has been assumed in fig.l, on the contrary it merges with the axis of zero by a progressive curvature. As a result, after the final stage deformations occur which depend on the importance of the curvature.
Fig. 2 shows how these deformations occur.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
When the operation corresponds to point P of the real characteristic K, the plots of the curves at the output of the amplifier are not faithfully reproduced because of the curve, on the contrary the curves are flattened, as we can see it in a. If the operation corresponds to point P ', that is to say to the point where the rectilinear part of the characteristic ends, a quiescent current J arises. At the same time, however, the portion of the side bands which must be eliminated is further amplified and also causes deformation.
The plots of the curves corresponding to point P 'are denoted by b.
To avoid these non-linear deformations, it is proposed, in accordance with the invention, to insert in the grill circuit of amplifier B a one-way rectifier, for example a diode lamp, which eliminates half of the voltage. side bands. Instead of a diode lamp, any other tube can obviously be used, which may have a modulated grid and may or may not be filled with gas. The use of a contact rectifier can only be recommended in the case of relatively low powers.
Fig.3 shows the operation of a device of this kind. The point corresponding to the operation is the point P at the end of the rectilinear part of the characteristic K.
Thanks to the rectification carried out by the diode lamp, the grid circuit of the tube receives only plots of curves of the shape shown in the figure, which are symmetrical to the plots of corresponding curves, but cut off from the negative amplitudes.
In this case, the running characteristic of the rectifier should be chosen as straight as possible. As the point P is not on the zero axis, there is still a quiescent current J, but which, as has already been said, has no influence on the alternating currents. It is thus possible to borrow from the anode circuit of the amplifier, that is to say after amplification of the currents represented by curves which are a faithful reproduction and without deformation of the currents applied to the amplifier.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Fig. 4 is an example of a circuit diagram of the final stage of amplifier B. The position of point P is determined by setting the preliminary gate voltage G.
The diode lamp D mounted in the gate circuit eliminates one of the halves of the alternating voltage transmitted through a transformer T.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the point corresponding to the operation is chosen as usual until now, the point of intersection of the characteristic of the amplifier B with the zero axis and The operating characteristic of the rectifier so that the deformations which result from the curvature of the characteristic of the amplifier are compensated by the curvature of the characteristic of the rectifier.
