"EXTINOTEUR AUTOMATIQUE ELECTRIQUE "
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"AUTOMATIC ELECTRIC FIRE EXTINGUISHER"
The present patent relates to an apparatus called an "electric automatic extender" intended for the immediate extinction of the beginnings of automobile carburettor fires or of any other beginning of fires to be feared permanently.
The device is based on the fact that a wire sensitive to the action of heat can give way and thus close, by means of a suitable switch, an electrical circuit in which there is a motor operating a centrifugal pump; this pump projecting a jet of extinguishing liquid on the flames as well as on neighboring parts.
The complete motor-pump unit includes: a fire extinguisher proper and an automatic switch. These two devices are interposed in series in an ordinary electric circuit formed by themselves and the poles of a current source.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
For this purpose, the wire, sensitive to the action of heat, is placed above the device or material from which ignition is feared (particularly the carburetor of an automobile).
If this device or material catches fire, the wire breaking gives way, releases an automatic switch with self-stripping action which closes and directs the current to a special electric motor-pump unit having sealing and retracting devices. It is necessary for its certain functioning and therefore any effective action independent of the period of non-activity of the system is impossible.
This re-entry of air and this airtightness are ensured by the percussion of tin washers during the downward movement of the motor shaft carrying the armature and its extension la): That of the pump, initially raised, which releases a lever striking a tin washer thus creating an inflow of air into the liquid reservoir loaded on the pump,
2 allows the puncture by a seal fixed to the end of the axis of the pump wheel, a tin washer, thus allowing the entry of the extinguishing liquid into the pump at the time of its use .
In order to bring out the above description, the appended drawings show:
Figs * I and 2 are elevation and plan views of the closed automatic switch.
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation through an automatic electric fire extinguisher of the kind contemplated.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a construction detail of Fig. 3.
Fig.5 an elevational view of a construction detail of Fig.3.
Fig.6 is a schematic view showing the way in which the envisaged automatic fire extinguisher is connected to the electrical pipe of a motor car.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the automatic switch is shown in the closed position and is made up of a spring blade 1, fixed to an insulating base 2. Above this blade moves a silver slider. 3, guided by a rod 4 and constantly pushed on the blade by a spring 5. The blade 1 forms one pole and the wiper 3 forms the other pole. In the standby position, a sensitive wire 7 the action of heat retains the wiper 3 to which it is fixed at 8 and on the other hand at
9 to a support 10, separated from the blade 1 by compressing the spring
5.
Terminals 11 and 12 are mounted on base 2.
11 communicates by an electrical connection 13 with the blade
1 and terminal 12 by a flexible electrical connection 14 with the wiper 3.
The fire extinguisher proper, see fig. 3, comprises an ordinary electric shunt motor 15, a special centrifugal pump 16 always charged, a carbon tetrachloride tank 17 and special sealing and air intake devices, res- respectively 18 and 19; it further comprises, in addition to the connecting wires, a flexible metal pipe 20 terminating in an il strainer and terminating above the carburetor or other material to be protected.
The motor-pump unit 15-16 is mounted vertically on the large tank 17, a seal ensures the seal * This seal is obtained by hearing the pump 16 (Standby period) by a tin washer 23 blocked on its seat 22 by a nut 24. This same sealing system is applied to the air inlet 19.
On the cover 25 of the motor 15 is mounted an articulated lever 26 pushed downwards by a spring 27 and carrying at its end a vertical rod 28 provided at its end with a point 29 capable of piercing the washer at the desired moment. tin
30. This cover 25 also carries a trigger, see fig.4
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
31 always pushed back towards the axis 32 of the motor 15 by a spring 33, This axis 32 carries, see fig. 5, a transverse groove
34 in which engages the trigger 31 to retain it at its high point; the axis 32 being movable from bottom to top (for this purpose the motor manifold at a sufficient height) .At its high point, the axis 32 retains the pump impeller 16 raised at the end of its duct. central containing a strainer 36 a point 35 and the lever 26 pushed by the spring 27.
It works as follows:
As soon as the wire 7 gives way as a result of the ignition of the carburetor or other device, the wiper 3 pushed back by the spring 5 meets the blade 1 and, given the shape of the latter, a self-stripping action takes place (to avoid possible false contacts caused by impurities which could be deposited on the slide.1 during the standby period can be very long), and the contact is established between 1 and 3.
The current from the battery or from the generator or from the network, as the case may be, is brought to the motor '. 15 on the first quarter of a turn it makes, the axis 32 pushes back the trigger 31 and it descends by sloping. releasing the lever 26 which strikes through the rod% the tin washer 30 from which air enters the tank 17 to allow it to be emptied at the same time as the tip 35 of the pump wheel 16 has perforated and torn the tin washer 23 making a joint, the liquid charged in the reservoir 17. enters the pump 16. and the latter delivers it under pressure through the flexible pipe 20 and the strainer 21 over the flames at. switch off.
If the tin washer 23 cut by the pump wheel 16 were to enter into the suction port of the latter it would be stopped by the strainer 36.
In fig. 6 schematically shows the application of the extinguisher to a motor vehicle, 37 of which represents the battery, 38 the ground. An electrical connection 40 is established between terminal 12 of automatic switch 2 and a terminal of the warning device 39. As soon as the wire breaks
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
7 of switch 2, the current of the battery 37 brought to the terminal 11, is directed by the terminal 12 at the same time on the pump motor 15-16 and by the connection 40 to the warning device, the return of the current s 'performing.by mass 38.
In the event of a fire other than that monitored by the sensitive wire, the length of the flexible connection wire makes it possible to transport the device to the location of the flames to be extinguished.
