<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"SIDE SEAL FOR METAL BOXES"
The present invention relates to improvements to the lateral joints of the bodies of metal boxes and more particularly to a lateral joint of the stapling and overlapping type.
One of the aims of the present invention is to provide a stapled and overlapping connection which is made in such a way that the breaking force which is exerted on the junction weld in the entire middle part which is located between the ends. of the side seal when the box is subjected to excessive internal pressure, i.e. shearing force.
On the attached drawing:
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of a box according to the invention, part of the box being shown cut away, so as to show the connection between the ends and the body of the box.
Figure 2 is a side view of part of the edges of the body blank before they are assembled.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on a larger scale of part of the body of the limp before the ends are attached to it.
Figure 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a section taken along line 5-5 of Figure 3, and
FIG. 6 is a view similar to FIG. 4, but showing the broken weld fillet.
In the usual type of clip joint, the joint is inside the body of the box and the body wall is curved outwards, at the base of the outer hook so as to rest against this base of the box. hook. This is achieved during the hammering operation thanks to the shape of the rib which is in the pile. One of the goals achieved by thus conforming the body wall to the vicinity of the base of the outer hook is to keep these hooks engaged until they have been welded. When shaping the body wall as shown above, the weld extends well around the base of the outer hook and a weld fillet forms which adheres to the base of the hook and adjoining part. of the body wall.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
It often happens that one has to process products in the box after the box has been closed and, during this treatment, an internal pressure develops which exerts a tangential tensile force on the side seal. The ends of the box are double crimped to the body and resist forces tending to expand the body of the box in the regions adjacent to each of the ends. The weakest part of the side seal is in the region that is in the middle of its length. Excessive internal pressure tends to bend the side seal outward and exert a tensile force on it.
This traction exerted on the weld fillet is only supported by the tensile strength of the weld and the weld breaks frequently. The breakage of the weld fillet weakens the weld and also allows the body of the box to be enlarged in the central part thereof, as well as permanent destruction of the side seal.
It has been found, in accordance with the invention, that if the body of the box has such a shape, at the base of the outer hook, that the latter gradually curves outward and is connected to the periphery of the body. of the box at a point which is distant from the base of the outer hook, the weld ends substantially on the underside of the base of the outer hook and all the weld is subjected to a shear force when the body of the box is subjected to internal pressure, rather than tensile stress, which greatly increases the strength of the side seal. In the embodiment of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the invention shown, on the box body 1, is fixed an upper end 2 by means of a double crimp 3.
The lower end is also fixed to the body by a double crimping 4. The body 1 is made from a sheet metal blank - cut to size, notched, then bent so as to constitute the hooks. The body blank has a flat part ± which covers a flat part 6 at each of the ends of the side seal and this constitutes the covering parts of the side seal. At one end of the blank, the metal is bent so as to constitute a hook 2 and, on the other edge of the blank, the metal is bent to constitute a hook 8. The hook 2 is the internal hook because it is carried by the inner covering part and the hook 8 is the outer hook, as it is carried by the outer covering part.
The blank constituting the body of the can is bent on a mandrel and the hooks are stapled; after which the mandrel is dilated so as to draw the hooks fully, then the joint is subjected to the action of a hammering element so as to crush the hooks and to conform the metal in the region near the base of the hook exterior 8. This element which shapes the body of the box in the region of the hammering is referred to as the rib. In the implementation of the present invention, the rib has a shape such that the wall of the body of the box in the regions adjacent to each of the overlapping parts of the side seal, is bent outwards so as to apply right against the base of the outer hook 8. Figure 5 is a section of this part of the side seal.
In the region indicated
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
by 9, the wall of the body is curved outwards from a point 10 and it connects to the outer contour of the body of the box approximately at 11. The wall of the body, between points 10 and 11, is located right against the base 12 of the hook 8. The rib is cut so as to give a new shape to the body wall, from point 13 to point 14, looking at figure 3. In this region, which is the middle region of the length of the side seal, the wall of the body, from point 15 adjacent to the base 12 of the outer hook, gradually curves outwards and joins the outer contour of the body of the box at point 16, (see figure 5).
When the side seam made in the above manner has been welded, the weld forms a small thread 18, in that region between points 12 and 14, and this thread is placed against the extreme inner part of the base of the hook. 8. The central line b of this thread is almost tangent to the body of the box and the tangential force exerted on the net, due to the internal pressure which prevails in the body of the box, is a shearing force and not a force. traction. It is a well-known fact that the shear strength of weld metal is several times higher than the tensile strength.
In the region between the ends of the side seal and points 13 and 14 respectively, the weld forms a thread 17 which ends in the vicinity of the outer periphery of the body of the box. The axis of the thread is almost radial to the body of the box and the thread is subjected to a tractive force.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
tion which breaks this thread, as indicated at 12a in FIG. 6 when the force exceeds the tensile strength of the weld metal.
As previously noted, double crimping the ends of the can to the body helps the solder resist internal expansion forces on the can body. This additional strength due to double crimping gradually decreases going towards the middle of the length of the joint.
It has been found that when the body wall is shaped as shown, the side seal has much greater strength in the mid-region of its length. The double crimps provide sufficient additional strength to the weld in the regions adjacent to the end of the side seam and, as a result, the body wall can be shaped in these areas to hold the hooks stapled to make the weld .
In the box body described above, a side seal is obtained which has all the advantages of the usual clip obtained by making the body of the box, this side seal having a much greater resistance to breaking forces when is subjected to internal pressure.
Although the present invention, as shown, shows the conformation of the metal of the can body such as to impose a shear force on the weld fillet in the middle part of the length of the side joint only, it It is of course understood that this conformation of the wall of the container can advantageously extend from one end to the other of the hooks, since it increases the resistance
