Description
<EMI ID=1.1>
%
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
l'endroit de cette fissure.
Method of checking rivet holes, bolt holes
<EMI ID = 1.1>
%
The present invention relates to a method for checking, examining the material around rivet holes, bolt holes, etc., for tears which may occur at this location.
In order to recognize the existence of tears in the material at the location of the rivet holes, in particular in high pressure tanks, the following procedure has hitherto been carried out:
<EMI ID = 2.1>
In case of tears, cracks or scratches, the walls of the holes were, on the other hand, treated with sodium sulphide, after which impressions were taken on silver bromide paper.
Any cracks or scratches would then show up as dark lines on the bromide paper.
This verification method has two faults in particular: on the one hand, the rather long work required by the
polishing and stripping, and secondly, the little safety
offered by the imprint process; wall treatment
frequently producing, by friction, the surface sealing of existing cracks.
These two faults are avoided in accordance with this
invention by passing through the rivet hole well
rubbed, an electrical conductor and sprinkling the wall of the
hole, during the passage of electric current or after this passage, of a powder of magnetizable material or by wetting it
of a liquid in which this powder has been diluted. The stream
determines a magnetic ring field in the surrounding mass
the hole ; if the magnetic lines of force of the annular field
arrive at cracks, they come out of the iron in a short path and assemble the magnetic powder above the
rift. Currents of a few hundred amperes are sufficient
already to achieve this result; the sensitivity of the process is such
that grinding and polishing of the walls is unnecessary and that
cracks or tears still appear, even if they have
<EMI ID = 3.1>
consecutive milling of said walls.
Fig. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing show an example
<EMI ID = 4.1>
the location of this crack.
