<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

METHOD AND DEVICES FOR THE. TEMPERED GLASS AND OTHER MATERIALS.
The present invention relates to the tempering of objects, made of various materials, such as glass, metals, etc., and relates to a method and devices for effecting the sudden cooling of these objects after they have been heated. at a suitable temperature.
It is known to produce this cooling by projecting air or various fluids on the surface of the object.
In this process, large volumes of fluids are used and certain precautions should be taken so that the discharge of the air does not disturb the direct action of the blowing jets.
It has already been proposed to establish in the vicinity of each blowing member one or more suction members intended to capture the air after its contact with the glass object and to evacuate it.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
immediately outside the area of the other blowing jets.
But the devices proposed are quite complicated in their installation and moreover only give incomplete results.
The aspiration Absorbs only part of the air which strikes the object, If, to capture it in full, the depression is increased, we manage to suck outside atmospheric air and, moreover, to pass direct air from the blowing nozzles to the suction nozzles without it coming into contact with the foil, so that the exact correspondence that is sought between the blown air and the sucked air is not obtained,
The object of the present invention is to ensure the perfect evacuation of air or other fluid in the projection quenching process.
It consists, in principle, in placing the object to be soaked in an enclosure which completely surrounds it and has, on the one hand, openings or nozzles for spraying fluid and, on the other hand, orifices which are placed close to each preceding opening, As the wall which envelops the object offers no other possibility of evacuation than these orifices, the projected fluid is obliged to be completely evacuated through them.
According to the invention, the size of the discharge openings is proportioned to that of the blast openings, so that if, for example, for some reason, the section of the projection openings is different from place to place. other, for example larger if one wishes to have a more energetic action, it will be the same for that of the evacuation openings which correspond to them, the section of the orifice or of all the orifices of 'evacuation which correspond to the same blowing orifice being proportioned to the section of this blowing orifice.
Under these conditions, in all cases the fluid of each jet is evacuated through the evacuation orifices which are in its immediate vicinity. In general, it can be said that, in the system of the invention, the discharge currents remain in the zone of action of each jet, and therefore no longer occurs.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
flow of discharge currents parallel to the faces of the object.
It is provided, in addition, that the discharge orifices may be in relation, either simply with the atmosphere, or with the same chamber maintained in depression. In the latter case, the entire evacuation is facilitated, which increases the efficiency of the system,
The embodiments of the invention may vary according to the quenching effects which are seen and the shape and nature of the objects to which they are applied,
There is shown, by way of example, in the appended drawings, two embodiments of devices making it possible to temper glass objects by blowing air.
In this drawing:
Figure 1 is a section of the device.
Fig 2 is an A-A cut of the previous one,
Fig. 3 is a variant.
As seen in this drawing, fig. 1, the new device for uniform tempering by air jets of a flat sheet of glass suspended vertically, consists of a capacity formed by two symmetrical shells a, mounted on supports or frames not shown, which allow them to be separated from each other. 'one of the other to place between them the glass sheet b, previously heated to the suitable temperature, and then bring them closer, the parts a which come to be pressed against each other form a joint, Clamping members quick-acting can be used to hold the shells tight together. The sheet is held by the usual suspension means, such as clamps d, or by suspension frames.
The shells a are integral with blowing boxes e receiving pressurized air through flexible ducts fl connected to an air inlet f,
The side walls of the shells are pierced with orifices &, through which the air is projected onto the sheet. Other holes h serve to evacuate the air that has acted on the sheet. *
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
These holes h open into tubes hl leading the air to the outside. Each blowing orifice is surrounded by several evacuation orifices.
Under these conditions, each projected air jet hits the sheet, and the air, immediately after having acted, is evacuated to the outside through the orifices h and the ducts h1. The orifices being assumed to be regularly distributed, the quenching obtained is perfectly regular and uniform.
If we do not want to soak all the parts of the sheet equally, but if, on the contrary, we want to obtain certain localized tempering effects, it suffices to give to the blast holes, and at the same time to the blow holes. corresponding avaouation, different dimensions depending on the desired effects. It is also possible to influence the distribution of the blast holes, in particular by varying their density per unit area, the three evacuations always being, as has already been said, proportioned in each place to the orifices of blowing.
By the same means, by applying them in an appropriate manner, it is possible to obtain a uniform hardening of an object having irregularities in shape, thickness, etc., by exerting for this purpose different actions from one zone to another. another of this object.
If it is necessary, in order to obtain a uniform quenching, to cool certain parts further, one will have opposite @ or oi of the blow holes of larger section and, in greater number and one will place in their vicinity of orifices or evacuation of dimensions and, / Dark in proportion to the preoedents.
The same principles can be applied for the hardening of objects such as hollow objects.
Fig. 3 represents an example of this application and shows a box for the quenching of a hollow part n. This box has a bottom o surrounding the object and a top p penetrating into the object, this bottom and this top constituting blowing boxes. The blowing air is projected onto the glass through orifices g, and it is discharged through orifioes h and pipes
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
h1, as in the arrangements already described.
In the example shown, it has been assumed that one seeks to obtain a uniform quenching, and for this purpose a uniform distribution has been given to the blowing and discharge orifices: To obtain, on the contrary, unequal quenching consequently uses the various means indicated above.
It is understood that the characteristics of the above devices are applicable to the toughening of objects made of material other than glass and that one can use, to carry out the toughening by projection, any fluids, gaseous, liquids. , etc ... alone or in mixture with each other, or with the air
The arrangements described above are given only by way of example; all the details of execution, the shapes, dimensions and materials employed may vary in all cases without changing the principle of the invention.
