<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

PATENT OF INVENTION IMPROVEMENTS IN THE ORIBLING OF COAL.
An improved method and apparatus for screening coal is disclosed.
The main object of the invention is to obtain, economically and with the aid of a relatively simple apparatus, a relatively small 0.5 mm sizing carbon. stitch, decreasing to approx. 0.2 mm. mesh.
The main object of the invention is achieved by passing the unclassified coarse coal, over a fine mesh screen, which is arranged in the path of an air stream, the movement of the air being organized to be capable or sufficient to prevent fine carbon from passing through the screen leading the air from the screen to a cyclone, or its equivalent, where the fine carbon is extracted, and returning the air to the inlet of the fan which generates the air flow.
The air current therefore moves in a closed circuit.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to another characteristic of the invention, the air stream has an intake and the intake or vent is connected to a dust collector, so that part of the air stream which can carry very fine dust is fed to this collector. The dust collector is arranged outside the closed path of the air stream so that excess air which can be introduced, for example by a rotating feed device which supplies the sieve with uncalibrated material, is thus advantageously separated or extracted from the closed path, while the air which is discharged to the atmosphere is clean or purified.
The screen is preferably a vibrating screen, and it is inclined so that the coarse or non-sized material descends to an outlet which is, as far as possible, closed or prohibited to the passage of air, while it allows the unseparated coarse coal leaving the sieve.
An embodiment of the invention will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a schematic illustration of an apparatus organized for carrying out the method according to the invention.
Coal is fed from the hopper 1, using the rotary feeder 2, to a mesh screen of suitable size. 3, which is inclined in a downward direction and which is preferably of the vibrating type. The sieve 3 is enclosed in the chamber 4, through which a current of air is made to flow, at the desired speed, by the fan 5, in the direction indicated by the arrows. The speed is such that it prevents fine charcoal from passing through the screen. Passing through the sieve 3, the air current lifts the fine carbon with it and carries it into the cyclone 6, where it is separated and falls towards the outlet 7 passing through the valve 8. The air passes from the cyclone 6 at the inlet of fan 5, thanks to pipe 9.
Line 9 is shown in the drawings as provided with a socket, or event. using pipe 10. Any excess air which may have been introduced, for example by the rotary feeder
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
nant 2, can pass through line 10 to dust collector 11, where it is purified, and, if desired, vented to atmosphere. The dust which separates in the dust collector 11 is discharged, passing through the flap valve 12, to the dust outlet 13. The separated coarse coal, which remains on the sieve 3, goes down to the coarse coal outlet. 14, where it is unloaded.
Means such as valves, of known type, are provided at the outlet 14 to prevent, as much as possible, the passage of air through the outlet.
Guide plates or the like, 16, the inclination of which can be adjusted, can be arranged under the screen 3 so that the air passing through the screen can follow the most suitable path while registers 17 can be arranged in the part. lower part of chamber 4. Appropriate baffle plates, such as 18, can be arranged longitudinally of chamber 4, in order to ensure a good distribution of air over all parts of the screen 3.
Dampers or valves are suitably arranged in the nozzles or air passages, for example in conduits 9 and 10, to control the flow of air therein. Means, for example baffles, can be provided in the chamber 4 above the sieve, to cause the premature deposition of the coal of larger dimensions than that which is desired to be collected in the cyclone, the baffles being arranged in the path of the air stream so as to be encountered or struck by the moving coal particles.
Means can also be provided for adjusting the inclination of the screen.
It should be understood that the term "dust collector is used herein to denote any suitable known apparatus, and includes, for example, an electrostatic precipitation apparatus.
The arrangement shown in fig. 1, in which the outlet
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
air from Cyclone 6 is vented, requires the entire system to be pressurized, and therefore precautions may need to be taken to prevent leaks at the seals and to reduce the possibility or likelihood of air leaks or exhaust causing dust through the charcoal entering the unit and through the strainer relief valve or flapper.
These difficulties can be overcome by arranging the vent under the screen, and directing the bypass stream to a dust collector. One or more such vents may be provided, and the streams led to one or more dust collectors.
By locating the vent under the screen, the system can operate under vacuum or vacuum from the top side of the screen to the blower inlet.
When the vent is arranged in this way, the dust collector may be arranged either as shown in Figure 1, or it may be placed between the screen and the fan, although in this case it is to recommend the use of a fan constructed so as to be able to withstand the erosion generated by the dust which will necessarily pass through it.
