BREVET D'INVENTION au nom de SOCIETE DES USINES CHIMIQUES RH#NE-POULENC PERFECTIONNEMENT AUX DISPOSITIFS DE FERMETURE POUR RECIPIENTS A
LIQUIDES VOLATILS.

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
REVENDICATIONS.

PATENT OF INVENTION in the name of SOCIETE DES USINES CHIMIQUES RH # NE-POULENC IMPROVEMENT IN CLOSING DEVICES FOR CONTAINERS A
VOLATILE LIQUIDS.
The present invention relates to an improvement in closure devices for containers, made of glass or metal, containing liquids, under pressure and very volatile, such as ethyl chloride, which are allowed to escape through a capillary orifice, which can open or close at will, for example by a lever or the like, carrying a rubber stopper, which is applied to this capillary orifice.
The closure device according to the invention is characterized in that inside a body in the form of a sleeve, fixed to the container by welding or screwing, is fixed a metal head, which ends on the outside in a protrusion in mushroom shape and which is crossed along its axis by a channel, extending to the base of the mushroom, so that by blowing this mushroom, we discover the orifice of this channel and we make

thus the container ready for use, while this mushroom ensures the absolute tightness of the container before use.
The liquid passage channel may have a capillary constriction, constituted by a diaphragm, pierced with a very fine hole, opening into the axial channel of the head of the closure.
The accompanying drawing shows by way of example one embodiment of the invention:
Fig.L is an axial sectional view of the container closure device, before use thereof; and
Fig.2 is a corresponding view of the closure device ready for use.
This closure device comprises a body in the form of a sleeve a, fixed to the upper part of the container b, for example by welding, as shown in b1. In a recess a1 of this body is fixed, for example by welding, as shown in c1, a head ±, comprising an outer projection in the form of a mushroom c2; this head is crossed along its axis by a channel waiting until the constricted part 0 3, which connects the head c to the mushroom c2.
On a lateral ear a2 of the body a of the closure is articulated, at el, a lever e, carrying at its inner end a rubber stopper e2, which (fig. 1) is applied to the upper face of the mushroom ± 2 under the action of a spring !, resting on the lug a2.
In the body al recess.! of the closure, below the head centers the latter and a part g, also housed in the recess al, is mounted a diaphragm h, made of a suitable metal, having a very fine hole, hl, arranged along the axis of the d channel of the head.
A wire mesh i, forming a filter, is preferably placed below the part, between the latter and the shoulder delimiting the bottom of the recess a1 of the body a of the closure.
Fig.l shows the closure device on the container, before the latter is used, that is to say during its
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
transport, storage, handling; the mushroom c2, closing the channel!, ensures the absolute tightness of the container.
To make it ready to use, all you need to do is pop this c2 mushroom, with a pocketknife or a knife, or a small fork similar to that used to remove bedbugs, or with any tool. The rubber stopper or buffer e, carried by the lever e, then comes, under the action of the spring f, to close the external opening of the channel d of the head (figure 2). Just press L with your finger the outer end of the lever e, in the usual way, to release this outer orifice of the channel! and allowing the escape of the liquid passing through the capillary orifice h1 of the diaphragm h.
It is understood that one can, without departing from the principle of the invention, make numerous modifications to the embodiment described and shown; this is how the closure of the external orifice of the channel!, passing through the head. can be obtained in any other way than by the plug e2 carried by the lever e.
This closure is equally applicable to the closure of containers containing volatile liquids which are to be used in jets of greater importance. Indeed, the diameter of the liquid stream delivered by the closure being regulated by the dimensions of the constriction of the internal channel, it is sufficient to increase the dimensions of this constriction accordingly to obtain a closure capable of ensuring all the desired flow rates. .
An example of application of such closures is their use for portable fire extinguishers which contain liquids or liquid mixtures under pressure, such as methyl bromide or carbon tetrachloride. At the time of use, these liquids must be debited in veins of a certain size and it will therefore be advisable to adopt a constriction whose diameter will vary, depending on the case, from a few tenths of a millimeter to a few millimeters and even more. For this particular application, this kind of closure offers a good
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
better guarantee than needle closures.
The latter are in fact difficult to make perfectly watertight, so that at the time of use it often happens that the extinguisher is empty: this obviously cannot occur with a closure according to the invention, then that, until in use, the extinguisher is completely sealed. In the event that the liquid exhaust channel is thus larger, the filter (wire mesh i) can be omitted,
The closures according to the invention can be used, in general, for sealing all containers containing highly volatile liquids, liquefied gases, gases under pressure or liquids maintained under the pressure of a gas.
It should also be understood that these closures can be completed by any auxiliary device, for example a lever carrying a rubber stopper making it possible to temporarily close the container after rupture of the mushroom.
