<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
vient d'être dit pour le fuselage 1, cela qu'il s'agisse d'avions monc-motenrs ou multi-moteurs;

"Improvements made to aircraft, in particular to airplanes, comprising an engine system fitted with at least one cooling radiator".
The invention relates to aircraft comprising an engine system provided with at least one cooling radiator; and it concerns more particularly, because it is in their case that its application seems to offer the most interest, but not exclusively, among these devices, airplanes.
Its main purpose is to reduce the resistance to advancement due to the existence of radiators.
It consists, mainly, and at the same time in making support by a hull the engine system to be included in the machines of the type in question, in placing the cooling radiator, in adding to said engine system, behind the same. system and, for its main part at least, inside the aforesaid carina.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Apart from this main provision, it consists of certain provisions which are preferably used at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below.
It relates more particularly to a certain mode of application (that in which it is applied to airplanes), as well as certain embodiments of said arrangements; and it relates more particularly still, and this as new industrial products, to machines of the type in question comprising the application of the said provisions, as well as the special elements specific to their establishment.
And it can, in any case, be well understood with the aid of the additional description which follows. as well as of the. sin ai-annexed, which supplement and drawing are, of course, given mainly by way of indication.
Fig. 1, of this drawing, shows, in arec plan from broken away and certain portions in section according to 1-1 freezes 2, the fuselage of a single-engine aircraft established in accordance with the invention.
The freezes 2 to. 4, finally, show the same fuselage respectively in side view with portions in axial vertical section, in end view from the front and in section along IV-IV fig 2.
According to the invention, and more particularly according to that of its modes of application, as well as hollow of the embodiments of its various parts, to which it seems that preference should be given, proposing to '' establishing, for example, a single-engine aircraft having to include a fuselage 1, to the front of which an engine 2, with liquid cooling (water, ethyl, glycol, etc.) is attached, we go about it as we know, or analogous way,
The whole of this airplane, with the exception of those of its components which concern its cooling system, is made up by having recourse to all appropriate provisions,
As for said cooling device,
it is formed by arranging the radiator 3 (or the radiators) in
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
rear of engine 2 and, preferably entirely inside fuselage 1.
For this purpose * said radiator is advantageously placed transversely in the vicinity of the master torque of the fuselage and a system of conduits is provided upstream and downstream of said radiator, respectively for the supply and discharge of gas. cooling air.
As regards, first of all, the system for the supply of air, it is advantageously constituted by a series of conduits 4 which are made to terminate, by their upstream end, at as many openings 5 arranged towards the front of the fuselage, preferably in an overpressure zone, and said ducts are arranged in such a way that they bypass the various organs contained in the front of the fuselage and that they channel the air with minimum swirl towards the inlet face of the radiator 3.
In view of the relatively high speeds attained by current airplanes, it will suffice to give the gills 5 a frontal area corresponding to only a fraction of that of the inlet face of the radiator,
In the case, shown in the drawing, where. the engine 1 comprises two rows of cylinders arranged in a V, for example a duct 4 can be placed between the rows of cylinders, two others respectively on each side of the engine crankcase and a fourth below said crankcase ,,
Said ducts will then be flared towards their rear end so that the outlet sections of these ducts are juxtaposed and correspond if possible to the entire inlet face of the radiator (fig, 4).
It should be noted that it will be advantageous to give the upstream ends of the ducts 4 an orientation corresponding to that which the air streams which meet the front of the fuselage, in the case cù a traction heliae 6 will be found. arranged immediately in front of the vents 5, said ends @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
upstream must therefore have a helical shape corresponding to the torsion imparted to the air streams by the rotation of the propeller. it is also possible to provide an air inlet directly into the interior of the engine cowling in order to cool the latter and avoid stagnant zones in the interior of said cowling,
In the case where. the profiling of the forward fuselage will be completed by a pan 7 rotating the propeller, this air inlet will advantageously be formed by a slot 8, annular or. semi-annular that will be formed between the periphery of said @ pan and the front edge of the fuselage 1.
The air entering through this slot will be able to exit, in the usual way, through vents provided, for example, towards the rear of the aforesaid cover,
It should be noted that said slot 8 could play the role of the aforesaid openings 5 and constitute the upstream opening of the pipes 4. In order to activate the cooling, certain parts of the engine, for example its housing, can be fitted with fins 9 which can be licked, either by the air entering through the slot 8, or by that passing through one of the aforesaid conduits 4, the Boni fin member constituting, for example, part of the walls of the conduit 4 in question.
Now as to the system for the exhausting of the cooling air, it can of course be constructed in any suitable manner, the air speed being relatively low and the seotions of. passage which must remain important after passing through the radiator.
However, it seems particularly advantageous to provide, to guide the air leaving the radiator, a partition 10 turning its convexity forward and suitable for deflecting the air streams, after their exit, from the radiator, towards at least some. portions of the fuselage wall 1,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
This partition 10 is advantageously given either the shape of a bow with a vertical front edge, or, better still, the shape of a more or less regular ogive turning its point forward.
In any event, at least the front part of the pilot's cabin may be placed in the concavity of the aforesaid partition 10.
The air, at its outlet from the radiator 3, will then be channeled between the walls of the fuselage and the partition 10 to end, for example towards the place where this partition connects with these walls, to outlet vents 11, by which it will exit in a direction substantially tangent to the fuselage.
The vents 11 will advantageously be placed in a zone of strong depression, for example behind the main torque of the fuselage, and will have them affect the shape, either of an annular Turkish opening surrounding the fuselage, or of one or more appropriately distributed rows of slots ;:,
Said vents could even be formed by at least one outlet orifice disposed entirely at the rear end of the fuselage,
Although the partition 10 can be made of any suitable material, it will be advantageous to arrange it in such a way that it can play the role of the fire walls which are presently provided on all airplanes.
Moreover, this role of protection against fire will be facilitated by the fact that the doter, containing a large reserve of liquid, will be interposed between the engine and the passenger compartment of the aircraft. The radiator, with its multiple air passages of small dimensions, will act, in the event of a fire in the engine cowling, like a mine lamp trellis and will prevent the propagation of flames to the rear.
In military airplanes, in particular fighter planes, the partition 10 will preferably be formed by a steel sheet forming armor, the efficiency of which will be even better as
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
bullets hitting it head-on will have a very oblique trajectory compared to its surface,
As regards, finally, the radiator 3, one can, of course, constitute it in any suitable manner, for example in the form of at least one plane element of suitable thickness and of transverse dimension corresponding to .
the section of the fuselage,
This radiator can be placed immediately in front of the partition 10, the end point of this oloison being able, for example, to pass through the radiator by an opening which will also serve as a passage for the various components (controls, flexible, pipes, etc.) in front of the radiator. connect the engine to the passenger compartment.
As a result, an assembly is obtained whose operation emerges sufficiently from the foregoing for it to be unnecessary to enter into any additional explanation about it and which has, in addition to the advantages already enumerated, the following between others; heating of the pilot's cabin since the partition 10, which delimits it towards the front, is licked by a current of heated air, this effect being able to be reinforced if hot air is admitted into the cabin; and possibility, in particular if the air exhaust ducts are extended rearwardly, of also heating the space occupied by the other passengers of the airplane.
As goes without saying, and as moreover already emerges from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application, nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts having more particularly made explicit; it embraces, on the contrary, all the variants thereof, in particular those where the invention would be applied to airplanes comprising at least one engine spindle which would be arranged as
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
has just been said for fuselage 1, whether it concerns monc-motor or multi-engine aircraft;
and shovels where the whole assembly constituted by the power train, its cowling, the radiator 3 (OR the radiators) and the external partitions at least of the air exhaust ducts, would be established in a homogeneous block, for example by one and the same manufacturer, to then be attached in front of a fuselage which can terminate at the front. by the partition 10 itself.
