Bougie pour moteurs à explosions, Henri V I N CENT
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Spark plug for explosive engines, Henri V I N CENT
This invention relates to a spark plug, the new characteristics of which will be described below, with reference to the appended drawing which shows an embodiment of the invention, preferably adopted, and in which:
Fig, 1 is an elevation of a spark plug made in accordance with one embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a section taken along line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view from below of the system shown in Fig. 1.
Figs.4 and 5 are front and side views of the two electrodes.
In the arrangement shown in figure 1, 1 designates a part of the wall of a combustion chamber which
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
has a threaded opening 2 into which a spark plug 3 can be screwed. This spark plug may have a base 4, made of metal or other conductive material, inside which is disposed a core of porcelain or other insulating material 5 , held in position in the base 4 by a socket 6.
Through the core 5 passes, in the longitudinal direction, a rod 7 of conductive material comprising a cap 8 which is applied to the end of the core. This cap 8 comprises a rod 9 on which a nut 10 can be screwed, serving as a terminal for an electrical conductor. The base 4 is provided with flanges 12 on which the tightening key is applied as well as the thread 13 s. 'engaging with the thread of the opening 2. The lower end of the spark plug is provided with two electrodes 14 and 15 which extend, over a sufficiently large distance, beyond the inner end of the electrode, this end being designated by 16.
The electrode 14, constituting the central electrode, is screwed on the rod 7, connected to the source of electric current, while the electrode 15, constituting the side electrode, is screwed into the wall of the base 4 and connected to the mass by the wall of the base screwed into the metal wall 1.
Electrode 14 is of massive construction and has an extended flat surface 17, extending across the length of the spark plug, but at a slight angle to the axis thereof. The surface 17 faces the electrode 15 whose end 18 is curved or bent towards the central eleotrode and its end is cut obliquely to form a surface 19, fig.4. The surfaces 17 and 19 are essentially parallel to each other and sufficiently close together to allow the formation of a spark between the two surfaces. The device used to produce the spark

that is known and in common use.
It has been found that, when the spark plug described above is used, the spark occurs at a point well inside the combustion chamber; it will be noted that the surface 19 located at the end of the side electrode 15 is located at a point adjacent to the inner end 20 of the electrode 14, which accelerates the rapidity of ignition of the fuel mixture and decreases the time of ignition. In addition, the spark forms away from the chamber wall and away from any other place where an accumulation of burnt or neutral gases could occur, this in turn activating the propagation of the flame to the interior of the chamber and, consequently, the starting of the engine.
Another advantage resulting from this improved construction is that, instead of a single spark, a group of sparks is formed, due to the use of the inclined surface 17, this group of sparks stan directed at the bottom of the spark plug, which tends to clean and keep it clean. It has also been found that by making use of this spark plug, the engines could run for extended periods of time, without the spark plug is clogged with calamine, grease or other matter, even though it has been used a grade of fuel capable of normally causing this clogging. These advantageous results are believed to be due, at least in part, to the characteristics described above.
In any event, the result is considerably improved.
Although a specific embodiment of the invention has been described and shown in the drawing, it goes without saying that various modifications can be made to these details, without departing from the principle of the invention, and that this mode implementation is in no way limiting.
