<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Pneumatic hammer without valves.
The present invention relates to a valveless pneumatic hammer established to have a simple and inexpensive construction, giving perfect operation. Pneumatic hammers without valves have already been constructed in which the distribution of compressed air is produced by the very movement of the striking piston driven by a reciprocating movement by this compressed air. In these hammers, however, the distribution lines were very complicated and required a lot of machining; in addition there was a relatively high pressure drop of the air in these ducts, which reduced the efficiency of the mechanism.
The pneumatic hammer without valves according to the present invention, which comprises a cylindrical body inside - which plays a piston which strikes against the tool in the tail of the hammer, as it is known, is characterized in that the oon - pressurized air intake duct opens at mid-height in said cylindrical body and communicates alternately with the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
upper face and the lower face of the striking piston, so as to drive the latter alternately in both directions, by the existence of grooves or flats formed longitudinally in the striking piston, and a circular groove formed at each end in the internal wall of the cylindrical body, the air located on the side where the piston is expelled being expelled each time through the interior of the piston, and through a fixed tube,
along the axis of the piston, communications being established by the movement of the piston itself.
When the striking piston is completely at the end of its stroke towards the tool, the compressed air is admitted into the closed space, comprised between the piston and the head of the cylindrical chamber, which maintains the piston in this position when the tool is at rest.
To start the striking piston, the tool is pressed against a hard body, which moves the striking piston a few millimeters, produces the air intake on the piston while simultaneously placing the upper chamber in communication with the exhaust and starts the piston in the above manner.
An embodiment of a pneumatic hammer according to the invention has been shown by way of nonlimiting example in the appended drawing, in which: Fige.1,2 and S are three views in axial section of the pneumatic hammer, showing the piston-striker in three different positions,
Fig. 4 is a cross section of the pi ston-batter along the line IV-IV of fig. 1,
Fig.5 is a cross section along the line V-V of fig. 1.
In these drawings 1 designates the hollow cylindrical body of the hammer, capped by the handle 2 held by pins 3 in corresponding holes drilled in the handle and in the thickness of the body 1. The holes are concealed by the ring 4 which maintains the pins 3. The cylindrical body 2 'of the handle
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
is for example screwed onto the body 1, the pins 3 preventing loosening. The upper end of the hollow cylindrical body 1 is closed by a plate 0 clamped between the bottom of the handle 2 and the cylindrical body 1. In the handle 2 is drilled a channel 6, into which the pressurized air pipe is screwed, and which ends in a circular groove 7 formed in the bottom of the handle 2.
The upper half l 'of the cylindrical body 1 is, on the outside, of a slightly larger diameter than the lower half and is slightly eccentric with respect to the axis of the lower half. In the thicker part of the body 1 thus formed (see fig. 5) is drilled the inlet duct 8 which communicates on the one hand with the circular groove 7, by a bore 9 in the plate 5, this bore being provided with a ring 9 'which fixes the plate 5, on the other hand with the interior of the cylindrical body 1 by a circular groove 10 in the internal wall at mid-height of the body 1; 1 "designates flats for clamping the hammer in a vise.
The internal chamber 11 of the body 1 is cylindrical with a smooth wall except for the groove 10 at mid-height, a large circular groove 12 at the top, and a wide circular groove 12 'at the bottom. The actual bottom of the chamber 11 has an orifice 13 for the passage of the rod 14 of the breaker 15. In the chamber 11 plays the striking piston 16.
This is hollow and open at its upper and lower ends. In its outer wall (fig. 4) are formed three flats 17, 120, parallel to the axis, which do not cover the entire length of the piston 16 so as to leave at each end a solid part 18 respectively 18 'forming a piston waterproof in the chamber 11.
The length of the flats 17 is calibrated in such a way that when the piercer 15 is pressed strongly against a hard object and its rod 14 protrudes as far as possible from the bottom of the chamber 11, and at the same time as the bottom of the piston 16 presses against a base 19 of the rod 14, these flats establish a communication between the internal groove 10 and the groove

12 'from the bottom, as can be seen in fig, l.v On the other hand, when the piston 16 is at the very bottom of the chamber 11 as shown in fig.3, the communication between the grooves 10 and 12 'is closed.
The rod 14 of the tool has a cylindrical extension 14 'which corresponds to the bore 25' at the bottom of the piston 16 and closes this bore as shown in fies. 1 and 3.
In the plate 5 is fixed, along the axis of the chamber 11 and the piston 16, a tube 20, which is open at its lower end and communicates through its upper end with a lateral duct 21 milled in the thickness of the plate 5, a circular groove 22 at the bottom of the handle 2, and an exhaust port 23 in the handle; conduit 21 and the orifice 23 may be located opposite, 90 from the section made in the drawing. The tube 20 is centered exactly between the bottom of the handle 2 and a rim 27 of the plate 5. It is wedged by a pin 28. The lower end 24 of the tube 20 is still inside the piston 16, and this end has a slightly larger outside diameter than the main part of the tube.
The bore 25 at the upper end of the piston 16 has a diameter which corresponds to that of the end 24 so that when the piston 16 is at the very bottom of the chamber 11, its bore 25 is exactly blocked by the part 24 as shown in fig.3. The upper part 26 of the tube 20 near the plate 5 is also of a diameter corresponding to that of the borehole 25, so that the latter is also closed when the piston 16 is in the high position as shown in FIG. 2.
The operation of this pneumatic hammer takes place as follows. it is started by pressing the breaker against a hard object so as to bring the striker piston to the position shown in fig.1. position which has already been described; this position the compressed air arriving through channel 6, through the groove
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
7, the borehole 9, the conduit 8, the groove 10, penetrates into the three intervals left between the three flats 17 and the internal wall of the chamber 11, and then into the groove 12 'at the bottom of said chamber through the interval left between the upper edges of this groove and of the solid part 18 'at the lower end of the piston.
The borehole in the bottom of the chamber 11 is permanently sealed by the rod 14 of the breaker and the wear ring 29 in the shank of the hammer. The borehole 25 'at the bottom of the piston is closed off by the extension 14'. Consequently the air pressure is exerted on the underside of the piston 16 and the latter is forced upwards. The gap between the upper edges of the groove 12 'and the part 18' of the piston is immediately closed and the air intake is cut off. This air works by expansion while the borehole 25 'is still closed by the extension 14'. During this time the air between the upper face of the piston 16 and the plate 5 is expelled, through the gap between the body of the tube 20 and the borehole 25, into the body of the piston, and then through the tube 20 itself. same, in the exhaust port 23.
When the striking piston has reached the top of the stroke as shown in fig.2, the flats 17 establish communication between the groove 10 and the groove 12. As a result, the compressed air is sent to the upper face of the cylinder. piston 16, the orifice 25 of which is completely closed off by part 26 of tube 20, so that the piston is forcefully forced downwards. The compressed air intake on this upper face is soon cut off and the air also works by expansion during part of the stroke. The air between the underside of the piston 16 and the bottom of the chamber 11 is obviously expelled by the borehole 25 'and the tube 20, and finally the piston 16 strikes with force against the base 19 of the rod. of the picker. If the breaker is pressed against a hard body, this operation is repeated indefinitely.
If on the contrary the pi -

queur is left free, the piston 16 arrives at the bottom of the chamber 11 as shown in fig.3. In this position the compressed air is no longer admitted on the underside of the piston, because the communication between the flats 17 and the groove 10 is interrupted. At the same time, compressed air is admitted on the upper face of the piston to keep it in this non-operating position. All you have to do is strike the breaker on a hard body for the reaction on the piston to move it upwards a few millimeters and start it.
