   Fig. 1 est une vue de face.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Vehicle headlight.

   The invention relates to vehicle headlights, in which a diffuser is mounted between the lamp, housed in the reflector, and the headlight window. According to the invention, this diffuser is shaped in such a way that the light rays which strike it, reflected substantially parallel by the reflector, are diffused both laterally with respect to the vehicle and on the ground in front of the vehicle. We thus manage to illuminate the road well regardless of the shape of the lighthouse window.

   The accompanying drawings show an exemplary embodiment of the invention.

   Fig. 1 is a front view.

   Fig. 2 is a section taken along line 2-2 of Fig.l.

   Fig.3 is a section taken along line 3-3 of Fig.l.

   Fig. 4 is a side view of the lighting produced and
Fig. 5 is a top plan view.

   The headlight housing is closed in front by a curved pane 4 of translucent glass. At the focus of the parabolic reflector 5 is mounted a suitable lamp 6. Between this and the pane 4 is placed a fluted disc 7 which is supported, for example, by means of a strip 8. The grooves 9 of the disc 7 have a . U-shaped profile and a prismatic or wedge-shaped cross section, such that, in the branches of the U, the edges of the corners are facing each other.

  Also the incident light rays, reflected in parallel by the reflector 5, are diffused both on the sides of the road and on the ground in front of the vehicle.

   As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the diameter of the disc 7 and its distance from the incandescent filament of the lamp 6 are chosen such that the rays emitted directly towards the front, at angle 0 (and not captured by the reflector 5, pass through the disc 7. In addition, the grooves 9 refract and diffuse these rays, so that when viewed from the front the glowing filament of the lamp 6 appears dimmed and its luminosity less dense.

   The reflector 5 comprises vertical grooves 10 of circular arc section, which are separated from each other by non-grooved surfaces. These grooves produce a low, lateral scattering of the spokes, for

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 long-distance lighting, which can however be omitted
The headlight window 4 has no effect on the rays which pass through it; optical point of view it could as well be flat. However, the convex shape is preferred. As a result of the existence of the grooves on the diffuser 7, it is possible to obtain good illumination of the road independently of the shape of the pane 4 of the headlight so that it can be given any suitable profile. .

   The grooves 9 of the diffuser 7 and the grooves 10 of the reflector 5 can also be shaped in a way other than that shown in the drawing. For example, the effect of the flutes 9 can be achieved by combining vertical and horizontal flutes and convex flutes can also be adopted instead of concave flutes.

  Instead of being flat, the diffuser disc 7 can also be domed. In addition, instead of the disc shown in the drawing, it is also possible to employ a lens-shaped diffuser which diffuses the light rays in the desired way.

   In Figs. 4 and 5, the rays scattered by the diffuser 7 are drawn in large lines, while the rays only reflected by the reflector are indicated by thin dotted lines. As these drawings show, the light beam passing through the diffuser 7 is diffused on the sides of the road and on the ground in front of the vehicle.

  The slight lateral diffusion for remote illumination, produced by the grooves of the reflector, is shown in Fig. 5.

   When two headlights are used, their diffusers can also be shaped in such a way that they diffuse the light rays not on both sides of the road but on one side.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 side Preferably, the left headlight diffuser then diffuses the light rays to the left and the right headlight diffuser diffuses the rays to the right. The directed diffusion on the ground can remain the same for the two diffusers, s.
