<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

"LOW CONSUMPTION FERRARIS DISC SECONDARY RELAY".
In all Ferraris disc relays, the torque, the motor used to drive the timing mechanism, is supplied by the Ferraris disc as soon as the controlled current reaches or exceeds a determined value.
These relays are distinguished from one another, either by operation or by construction: in some the disc turns normally for a certain fraction of the intensity of the set current, in others it is not released. that when the relay comes into effective operation; in some the disc is supported by a movable assembly the tilting of which corresponds to the engagement of the timer mechanism, in others, the disc is integral with the fixed frame.
Each of these devices has advantages and disadvantages both from the point of view of construction and from the point of view of use.
For certain types of devices the command, on the one hand
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of the timer mechanism by the Ferraris disc and on the other hand of the tripping, not only introduces a constructive complication and hence less operating safety, but, depending on the relay models, this generally still results in a greater consumption and lower sensitivity. It is difficult to achieve sensitivity and rapidity of operation which completely shields the relay from the possibility of integrating overloads occurring at short intervals of time, without partially sacrificing one or the other. qualities required of a good relay.
The object of the invention is to provide a secondary Ferraris disc relay with low consumption and high operating safety, having the following characteristics: the main air gap in which the Ferraris disc constantly rotates is between a fixed armature and a mobile armature each provided with a short-circuited ring or coil.
For normal current, the disc rotates at low speed without the need for a braking magnet. When the relay is operating, the moving armature controls the clutch and the main air gap is reduced to a minimum value compatible with the passage of the disc. As a result, the motor torque becomes high and the speed of the disc goes to a high value.
An apparatus meeting the characteristics of the invention is schematically shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows the new relay in the off state, that is to say that it is not requested to operate under the action of an overcurrent.
Figure 2 shows the same apparatus during a trigger operation.
In the two figures the same reference numerals designate the same elements, constituting the apparatus.
The fixed armature 1 carries the coil 2 'intended to be normally supplied by the secondary of an internal transformer.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
voltage connected in series in the circuit to be controlled. A movable armature 3, provided with a coil; in short circuit 5, can pivot about an axis 4 carried by the armature 1, which is also provided with a coil in short circuit 1 '. The Ferraris disk 6, movable around a vertical axis 6 ', rotates constantly in an air gap between the frames 1 and 3. The frame 3 is in direct mechanical connection, by a connecting rod 7 and an elbow lever 12 which can oscillate. around an axis 11, with a toothed sector 10, the axis of rotation of which is carried by the lever 12 and forming part of the timer mechanism.
The movement of the toothed sector 10 is limited downwards by a stop 21.
,
Normally the movable armature 3 occupies the position shown in FIG. 1; an adjustable tension spring 8 maintains it against a stop 9. If the intensity of the controlled current exceeds a determined value, the attraction force between the mobile armature 3 and the fixed armature 1 becomes greater than the opposing torque created by the spring 8. By appropriate kinematics of the lever arms, the opposing torque decreasing rapidly, the rapid operation and the sure engagement of the timing mechanism are achieved.
On the other hand, the air gap corresponding to the passage of the disc 6 being greatly reduced and the short-circuit rings 1 ', 5 switching off their normal relative position, the motor torque generated by the disc 6 becomes very large and the tripping is ordered as follows:
The attraction of the movable armature 3, causing the operation of the relay, brings the whole of the mechanism into the position shown in figure 2. During this movement, by means of the connecting rod 7 and of the lever 12 rotating around the axis ii, the toothed sector 10 engages in a well known manner with a screw 13, carried by the axis 6 'of the disc 6, which drags it upwards.
This sector 10 has a stop 18, which, at the end of its travel, acts on a lever 14, articulated at 14 'and normally supported on a stop 19 by a spring 20, which lever engages, by an appendix 15 , the trigger contacts
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
ment 16 and 17.
After the switch is triggered, the current is interrupted in the coil 2 so that the armature 3 is biased against its stop 9 by the spring 8, which causes the mechanism to disengage. The sector 10 falls by its weight on its stop 21 and the parts are ready for a new operation.
From the above description, two important advantages of the new relay clearly emerge.
First under (During normal the magnetic circuit being open and consequently of strong reluctance, the self-induction electro-motive force in the turns of coil 2 is weak, as well as the voltage drop or the number of volts-amps normally absorbed. Then this arrangement has the peculiarity that in the normal or rest position, fig. 1, the flux generated by the short-circuited turns 5 and 1 'placed respectively on the mobile armatures 3 and fixed 1 creates, despite their relative position, the weakening of the flux and the size of the air gap, a motor torque sufficient to drive the rotation of the disc 6 but only at low speed so that no use no additional device such as a braking magnet; this advantage results directly from the construction of the device.
It is obvious that without departing from the scope of the invention, it is possible to add to the relays having the aforementioned characteristics, a movable armature operating instantaneously in the event of significant short-circuits under the action of the leakage flow for example, or according to any other principle. known; also it would be possible to use other timing systems or other contact arrangements.
