 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  "Sealing ring for cast iron socket pipes with gland seal ,; '
In casing cast iron pipes with a gland seal, care must be taken to avoid the smallest disturbances which could cause a lack of tightness in the (Banalisations buried in the ground. Such a lack of tightness can for example be produced by the disturbances of the ground resulting from the vibrations of vehicles and machines.

The object of the present invention is to make it possible to maintain absolute etanoheity even in the above-mentioned circumstances. It essentially consists in using gaskets made of elastic material which have a shape such that they deform elastically as soon as they are introduced into the stuffing box and that they must therefore act as a self-extractor. tightly independent of the pressure of the cable gland.

   According to the invention, it is particularly advantageous to use a rubber sealing ring having an approximately rhomboidal base section. The opposite angles of the rhombus directed transversely to the axis of the ring must therefore deform elastically during the insertion of the sealing ring and thus already produce an effective seal which is encumbered made more complete by the introduction of the gland.

   In order to prevent the gasket from being damaged on one side by the contents of the pipe and on the other by the stuffing box, and also to facilitate its insertion, the angles of the cross section which are directed along the axis are reinforced by a deformable material, for example lead.

   The description which will follow, with reference to the appended drawing, given by way of example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented *
Fig. 1 shows the section of the sealing ring before use.

   Fig 2 shows the sealing ring placed on the male end of a push-in pipe.

   Figure 3 shows the position of the seal after the introduction of the male end into the female end of a pipe.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   Fig. 4 shows the completely finished seal.

   The basic shape of the cross-section of the sealing ring 1 is approximately rhomboid. The axially directed angles 4, 5 are reinforced with lead. Of the two free edges 2 3, the edge 3 is elastically deformed when the ring is placed on the male end 6 of a. pipe.

   When the male end 6 is introduced, in the direction of arrow 7, into the female end 9, the edge 2 must also deform elastically, so that, before tightening the gland 8, the ring produces an etanoheity. When, moreover, the stuffing box 8 is tightened in the direction of arrow 10, the seal is brought into its final shape in which the reinforcements 4, 5 are also deformed in a corresponding manner.

   The primitive rhomboldal shape of the seal section guarantees that, even in the event of possible loosening of the gland 8, the seal is good, due to the elastic tensile force of the. watertight ring.
