<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Selon 1'invention, et plus spécialement selon celui de ses modes d'application ainsi que ceux des modes de réali- sation de ses diverses parties auxquels il semble quil y ait lieu d'accorder la préférence) se proposant d'établir une clé destinée à permettre par exemple de visser ou de dévisser des é- crous ou boulons) à six pans, on s'y prend comme suit ou de façon analogue. on constitue essentiellement ladite clé par deux élé- ments a et b articulés l'un à l'autre autour d'un axe 0, l'un d'exu b étant solidaire d'un manche c, et on fait comprendre, à ces. éléments;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
On peut encore avoir recours à une disposition suppléa mentaire destinée à permettre damener l'écrou à serrer. en contact avec la surface A dans une position correcte, c'est-à-dire dans une position qui permette dtobtenir que la came B vienne;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Improvements made to wrenches intended to enter nuts, bolts, or other members of similar section".
The invention relates to keys intended to enter nuts, bolts, or other members of similar section, keys of the type called self-tightening, comprising at least two movable elements 1 + one relative to the other and such as, when the nut has been introduced between the latter, and the key is rotated in the direction suitable for screwing or unscrewing the nut (or bolt), the resistant force tends to bring the two aforementioned elements closer together towards the nut so that it is tight.
Its aim, above all, is to make these keys such that they respond better than hitherto to the various requirements of practice, in particular that their operation offers more security and that each of them. can be used for a = wider range of nuts or bolts of different sizes,
It consists, mainly - at the same time of articulating the two aforementioned elements one on the other, and of making
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
include at one of them a flat surface against which can rest a side of the nut (or bolt) - to make the other element include a cam profile at least partially circular, of which the radius and the distance from its center to the axis of articulation of the two elements, are chosen such that,
for all nuts with dimensions between two extreme limits, there is always a tightening position for which the cam is tangent to the side opposite to that in contact with the first element, substantially in the middle of this side, these conditions being obtained, preferably, by choosing a radius equal to or substantially) twice the said distance, this radius and this distance being advantageously as small as possible to bring the clamping action to the maximum.
It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions which are preferably used at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below, in particular, in a second provision, consisting in including, in the keys of the genre in question, elastic means suitable for tending to bring the working surfaces of their two elements closer together.
It relates more particularly to certain modes of application, as well as certain embodiments, of said provisions; and it targets more particularly still, and this as new industrial products, the keys of the type in question involving application of these marl provisions, the special elements specific to their establishment, as well as the installations comprising similar keys,
And it can, in any case, be clearly understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as of the accompanying drawing.
which complement and drawing are, of course, given especially as an indication
Figures 1 and 2 of these drawings show, respectively.,) \ In elevation and in side view, a key established in accordance with
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the invention, this key being shown, in Figure 1, in two different operating positions corresponding to nuts of different sizes,
Fig. 3 is a kinematic diagram illustrating the operation of said oil for the tightening of two coils of different sizes.
According to the invention, and more especially according to that of its modes of application as well as those of the embodiments of its various parts to which it seems appropriate to give preference) proposing to establish a key intended to allow, for example, to screw or unscrew nuts or bolts) with hexagon, the procedure is as follows or in a similar way. said key is essentially constituted by two elements a and b articulated to each other around an axis 0, one of exu b being integral with a handle c, and these . elements;
respective bearing surfaces between which the nut can be introduced, the assembly being such that said surfaces tend to approach each other automatically under the inaction of the resistant force which is applied to said elements when 'the sleeve c is requested in the without suitable for tightening or loosening,
Until now, in keys of this kind, we have been content to provide, on one of the elements, a flat surface against which a side of the nut could rest, and, on the other element, a profile. of cam that we determined in a very empirical manner In general,
these existing wrenches each worked only for a very small range of nuts of different dimensions, and, moreover, the automatic tightening was not always properly ensured.
The invention a. mainly for the purpose of remedying these drawbacks by proposing, for the profile of the cam, a new perfectly rational form.
According to said invention, is provided. usually comma on 1 * one of the elements
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
a, a flat bearing surface A, and, as regards the profile of, the cam B, it is made at least partially circular, the radius of this cam, and the distance from its center to the axis articulation 0, being chosen such that., for all nuts with dimensions between two extreme limits, there is always a tightening position for which the cam is tangent, on the side opposite to that in contact with the surface A , substantially in the middle of this pan
To this end it seems that the best solution to adopt consists in choosing for the cam an equal radius (or noticeably)
at twice the aforesaid distance, this radius and this distance being advantageously as small as possible in order to bring the tightening action to the maximum.
It is possible, for example, to establish the sketch of a cam that must be suitable for automatic tightening of a range of nuts of dimensions between those of two limit nuts El E2, proceed as follows,
The two nuts El E2 are drawn in the relative positions that they must occupy with respect to the surface A, one leads, on the side opposite to that in contact with said surface, and in its middle, and respectively for the two nuts, normals MM1 and N N1 one carries, on these normals, a length M O1 N O2 r, to determine the centers O1 and O2 of two circumferences C1 02 tangent to the nuts in M and N, the radius r of these circumferences being chosen , preferably, as small as possible but such, however, that the centers O1 and O2 fall in the part common to the two circumferences, and,
finally, we brought a tangent circumference to the first two etssant through the centers 01 and O2
The third circumference center of debt C will represent the axis 0 sought ;, and this circumference C of., Radius r will be the locus of the centers of the circumferences corresponding to the various positions of the cam (the two extreme positions being represented by
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the circumferences Cl and C2),
It is easy to see that, if we choose nuts of intermediate dimensions * we can always, by rotating the cam around the axis 0, bring it to be tangent in a very approximate way in the middle of the face referred to. above.
The radius r of the cam, as we said above, will only depend on the respective dimensions of the limit nuts E1 E2
To materialize the connection, articulated around 1 + axis 0, to be provided between the two elements a and b, we can proceed in any suitable manner; for example, the element could be given the general shape of a c, the end of which, located on the side of the pin 0, is established in the form of a yoke in which we have just introduced, and fixed to it articulated by a bolt ±, Isolated b carrying the cam,
Finally, this cam may, as shown, only comprise a circular sector * if the remaining portion of the circumference is not likely to be used.
It is also possible to have recourse to an additional arrangement intended to enable the nut to be tightened to be brought up. in contact with the surface A in a correct position, that is to say in a position which makes it possible to obtain that the cam B comes;
lean roughly in the middle of the corresponding side, as indicated above this arrangement consisting in making the element have two flat surfaces A and forming between them an angle of 120 so that the nut can always come and occupy a position . well determined with respect to the element a said nut having two adjacent sides in contact respectively with said surfaces,
This arrangement also makes it possible to avoid that during tightening, said nut cannot slide on Isolation a, The buttress force exerted during the tightening by the cam B is in fact trannement at the surface A following oblique forces these forces, thanks to the presence of the surface D, ten.
to drive the nut into the angle formed by the two surfaces
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
A and D and to keep it; in a perfectly stable position,
As a result, said surfaces can be made perfectly smooth, since no sliding is possible.
Following what; an assembly is obtained which has, compared to the keys of the kind in question already existing, many advantages in particular, that of ensuring a tightening without possible slippage, due to the fact that the cam B is always tangent substantially at mid instead of the corresponding pan and that of allowing with the same key, the tightening of a wide range of eorous of different dimensions.
And, either one is satisfied to proceed as it has just been said, or else, and better, one still has recourse to certain provisions such as the following, capable, if necessary, of being used in isolation.
According to this arrangement, which will be assumed to be applied to a key of the type described above., We combine, with the two elements a and b, elastic means tending to bring their working surfaces closer together, so as to initiate the tightening force as soon as the nut is introduced between said su faces.
These means will consist, for example, of either a rod e movable in a translational movement under the inaction of a spring! . the free end of this rod being able to come to rest on element a, either an elastic blade acting on said elements, or in any other way.
Thanks to these elastic means, we can make the key work in any position, that is to say even in an inverted position, tending to separate the elements a and b due to the weight of the element a (position that can be used to screw or unscrew a horizontal axis nut.
In addition ;, said means will allow the element to play a ratchet role .. so that we can operate
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
screwing or unscrewing by reciprocating movements printed on the handle c, and / without having to disengage the nut each time the said handle is brought back to the rear, it goes without saying, and as it emerges from elsewhere already from what precedes * the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application, nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts having been more specially considered; it embraces, on the contrary, all variants.
ABSTRACT
The object of the invention is to improve the keys intended to grip nuts. bolts. or other members of similar section, which improvements consist, mainly at the same time to arriculer the two aforesaid elements one on the entry, and to make include to one of them a flat surface against which can s '' press a side of the nut (or bolt) - to make the other element comprise a cam profile at least partially circular, the radius of which and the distance from its center to the axis of articulation of the two elements are chosen such that,
for all nuts of dimensions between two extreme limits, there is always a tightening position for which the cam is tangent to the side opposite to that in contact with the first element, substantially in the middle of this side, these conditions being obtained , preferably ,, by choosing a radius equal (or substantially) to twice said distance, this radius and this distance being advantageously as small as possible to bring the clamping action to the maximum, It relates more particularly to certain modes of application as well that certain embodiments of said improvements which also include a second provision, consisting in including.
