<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Electric iron and safety device against overheating.
The present invention relates to an electric iron with a simple, practical and inexpensive safety device intended to prevent overheating of the iron and the resulting danger of fire when left on. - that time the iron under current without using it.
According to the invention, to achieve this result, a thermal fuse capable of melting when the temperature of the iron becomes excessive is inserted in the power supply circuit of the electric iron, inside the latter, in order to stop the heating by cutting off the power. The fuse is interchangeable and preferably has the form of a plug which is screwed on or otherwise secured in a log.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
in the superstructure of the iron, advantageously in the insulating support of the connection pins.
It may be fitted with an optical spring-loaded warning device which trips when the fuse blows to indicate that the fuse has worked and must be replaced.
As the operation of the fuse does not involve any hazards due to the fact that it does not depend on any mechanism subject to disturbance, such as thermostat switches for example, the safety obtained by the use of the invention is complete.
This result is acquired at little cost because of the simplicity of the device used and its mounting in the iron which only entails a slight modification of the latter and does not add to the cost price like the costly automatic switches previously proposed.
One embodiment of the invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the rear part of the iron, taken along line 1-1 of FIG. 3
Fig. 2 is a plan view of this part of the iron without its cover, and
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line III-III of FIG. 1.
The electric iron shown in these figures comprises as usual a sole 1, a heating resistor 2, a clamping plate 3, a cover 4 and a handle 5 attached by bolts 6 which also fix the heating plate. tightening at the sole. At the rear of the iron, a block of steatite 7 held by a tab 8 in a recess of the plate 3, carries the two connection pins 9, 9 ', one of which 9 is connected directly to the resistor 2 by a contact blade 10.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The contact blade 11 of the other pin 9 'extends horizontally and laterally in a cavity of the soapstone block 7, above a lower contact blade 12 from which it is separated by a soapstone flange 13 and which is connected to the resistor 2. A threaded hole passes through the upper blade 11 in the extension of a vertical cylindrical housing 14, formed in the block 7 next to the pins 9, 9 '.
To connect the pin 9 'to the resistor 2, a fuse 15 in the form of a plug is fitted in the housing 14 which is screwed by its metal threaded ring 16 into the tapped hole of the blade 11, and rests by its bottom contact 17 on the blade 12.
A wire 18 of fusible metal at 280-300 C for example, connects the contact 17 to the ring 16 inside a soapstone nozzle 19 which passes through this ring to engage in the soapstone head 15 of the fuse where it is fixed by a pin 20. This pin assembly of the elements of the fuse makes it possible to easily remove the latter to replace the wire 18.
Starting from the contact 17, a thin warning wire 21 passes axially through the nozzle 19 and a spring 22, to butt up to a warning button 23 housed in the head 15 where it can slide under the action of the spring when the wire 21 gives way.
When the iron is in service, under current, the block of soapstone 7 which is in contact with the resistance 2 and the clamping plate 3, heats up in the same way as the rest of the iron. If the temperature of this rises above normal, ie 280-300 ° C., the wire 18 of the fuse 15 melts and the current flow through the resistor 2 is cut off.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
At the same time the wire 21 gives way and the warning button 23 goes beyond the head of the fuse to indicate that the latter has blown.
The iron can then be put back into operation only after replacing the blown fuse with an intact fuse, an easy operation even for any inexperienced person.
Not only does the thermal fuse of the iron according to the invention eliminate any danger of fire in the event that the iron is left under current on an inflammable support; but also it avoids burning the ironed fabric if the iron is left too long in the same place, by accident.
Of course, the details of execution described and shown by way of example can be modified without departing from the present invention.
