<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Dans d'autres dispositif s,la protection est assurée par des sécurités fusibles qui sont insérées dans un circuit parcouru par un courant faible et commandant un moyen de coupure logé dans un circuit principal de passais du courant d'alimentation ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
alors que la branche mobile 3a est amenée dans une position instable contre la borne fixe 2 et elle est maintenue par une soudure 4 qui est formée par un élément conducteur fusible qui offre une très faible résistance au passage du courant c'est-àdire une résistance suffisamment faible pour qu'il ne s'y produise aucun échauffement par effet Joule.La soudure 4 possède un point de fusion donné et elle est constituée par un alliage eutectique;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention due to Mr. Jean VINCENT relates to a device for cutting the supply circuit of an electric current device and especially of an electric heating device.
Many appliances in the industrial and household fields operate using electric current; This is the case, for example, with domestic cooking appliances such as fryers, cooking pots, or heating such as electric heaters.
Whatever their destination, electrical installations and appliances must generally be protected against excessively large variations in the intensity of the supply current if one wishes (... to prevent their destruction; for this purpose, we have recourse to fuse safeties which are fusible conductive elements through which the supply current passes through which they offer a certain resistance.
As a result of this resistance a heating of the fuses occurs, known under the name of Joule; this Joule effect is dependent not only on the nature of the fuse element but also on the intensity of the current; if the latter reaches an abnormal value, the Joule effect becomes significant and the temperature of the fuses can increase until it reaches the melting temperature of said fuses; these melt and cut the circuit.
Switching devices are also known in which an electrical resistance heats up by the Joule effect by the passage of too intense a current and melts a weld electrically isolated from the said electrical resistance which releases a cutoff switch subjected to a actuating spring.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Whatever their type, current breaking devices operate by the Joule effect, that is to say by the rise in temperature due to the resistance they offer to the flow of current; it follows that if there is no abnormal increase in the intensity of the current, such a device does not work which can be dangerous by causing the destruction of the device used which heats up abnormally or other accidents like the fire *
In other devices, protection is provided by fuse safeties which are inserted in a circuit carrying a weak current and controlling a breaking means housed in a main circuit for passing the supply current;
if the temperature increases abnormally, the safeties melt, which causes the breaking of the control circuit and hence the actuation of the cut-off means.
A drawback of known devices is due to the presence of contacts which can be welded or to mechanical assemblies often comprising various moving parts which risk getting stuck.
The present invention which aims to eliminate these drawbacks consists of a device for cutting a power supply circuit of an electric current device characterized in that said current flow circuit comprises a fuse conductor element having a very low electrical resistance but melting only by raising the ambient temperature in the device to an abnormal value depending on the composition of said element.
According to one characteristic, the fusible conductive element melting by abnormal rise in the ambient temperature is placed in series in the current flow circuit where it forms
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
a connection between two parts, at least one of which is mobile and brought into an unstable position so that by breaking the said connection by melting said element, said moving part returns to its stable position where it is separated from the fixed part which cuts off the current flow circuit.
Another characteristic consists in that one of the parts of the current flow circuit is formed by a connection terminal while the other part belongs to or is subjected to an elastically deformable means, which may be constituted by a spring *
In addition, the fusible conductive element melting by an abnormal rise in ambient temperature is a metallic element, with a given melting point, such as a pure metal or an alloy and in particular solder and, in particular, a eutoctic alloy.
Other features may appear in the following description of the appended drawings which show, by way of illustration only, a few examples of embodiment of the invention.
In these drawings, Figures 1 to 4 are schematic perspective views of four examples of execution *
In the figures are shown only the elements necessary for the understanding of the invention, the others having been intentional Being omitted *
In FIG. 1 which relates to a heating apparatus, a shielded element 1 has been shown in which there is a heating resistor 1a which ends with a terminal 2 for connecting the electric circuit bringing the current to the resistor; this circuit comprises a conductor 3 which is constituted by a spring in the form of a hairpin.
To allow the passage of current, branch 3c is maintained in a fixed position
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
while the mobile branch 3a is brought into an unstable position against the fixed terminal 2 and it is held by a solder 4 which is formed by a fusible conductive element which offers a very low resistance to the passage of current, that is to say a resistance sufficiently low so that there is no heating by the Joule effect. The weld 4 has a given melting point and it consists of a eutectic alloy;
when the ambient temperature, in the vicinity of the weld reaches the melting point of the eutectic, the weld melts, so that the branch 3a is no longer held and the wing automatically returns by elasticity to its stable position 3b where it is removed from terminal 2; power supply circuit of resistor 1a is broken and current no longer flows.
In the embodiment of FIG. 2, a plate 5 is permanently fixed to the fixed terminal 8 of an apparatus not shown; a similar plate 9 carried at the end of an elastic arm 9a for supplying the current is placed in its unstable position and held by a solder which is still an eludent conductor 6, fuse, of large section and having a very low resistance the passage of current; the curved end of the arm 9a is integral with a fixed support outlined at 11. When the ambient temperature increases abnormally so as to reach the melting temperature of the element 6, the solder melts and the plate 9 moves away from the plate 5 due to the elasticity of the arm 9a.
The embodiment of FIG. 3 shows that a V-folded plate 12 is permanently fixed to the fixed terminal 13; between the two wings of the plate 12 is housed the end of a conductor 14 elastically brought into this position and held there by the weld 15 still having a large passage section at the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
current; if the solder 15 melts during an abnormal rise in the ambient temperature, the end of the conductor 14 resiliently leaves its unstable position between the wings of the plate 12 and by moving away from the terminal 13 it thus cuts the circuit.
A particularly simple embodiment is that of FIG. 4 where the solder 16 of low electrical resistance forms a bridge between the two spaced ends 17a and 17b of a current passage conductor; the melting of the solder due to an abnormal rise in the ambient temperature cuts the circuit.
It is clear that it is possible to protect devices operating at various temperatures by suitably choosing the fusible conductive element, the melting point of which may vary according to the nature and composition of said fusible conductive element; thus the welding can be carried out with a pure metal, an alloy or a eutectic alloy.
A device according to the invention is advantageous because it is simple and does not include any mechanical movement; furthermore, it is safe to operate and the solder can be placed at a connection terminal of the device or at any place to be protected against abnormal heating; it in fact constitutes a maximum temperature safety device which can be applied to any electrical appliance and in particular to appliances having an electric heating element.
