<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Improvements made to internal combustion engines, particularly two-stroke engines.
The invention relates to internal combustion engines; and it concerns more particularly, because it is in their case that its application seems to offer the most interest, but not exclusively, among these engines, those with two strokes.
Its aim, above all, is to make the said engines such that the combustion of the injected fuel takes place under better conditions than in the engines used hitherto,
It consists, mainly, in bringing through the cylinder head of engines of the type in question a kind of well, constituting a compression chamber, at the bottom of which is placed the injector, the jet of which passes through said well along its length.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions, which are preferably used at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below.
It relates more particularly to a certain mode of application, as well as certain embodiments, of said arrangements; and it relates more particularly still, and this by way of new industrial products, to the engines of the type in question comprising application of said provisions, the special elements specific to their establishment, as well as the fixed or mobile installations comprising such engines.
And it can, in any case, be well understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the accompanying drawings, which supplement and drawings are, of course. given mainly as an indication.
Fig. 1 of these drawings shows in axial vertical section the upper part of a two-stroke vertical single-cylinder internal combustion engine established in accordance with a first embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 likewise shows the upper part of a motor of the same type established in accordance with a second embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 3, finally, shows in perspective the upper part of a piston for a two-stroke engine, also constructed in accordance with the invention.
According to the invention and more particularly according to that of its modes of application, as well as those of the embodiments of its various parts, to which it seems that preference should be given, proposing to establish an engine internal combustion, for example a vertical single-cylinder two-stroke engine of the type having a sufficiently high compression ratio for their starting to take place, when cold, without auxiliary heating means, we take as follows @
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
or analogously.
As regards, first of all, all of these motors, with the exception of the constituent elements of their compression chamber, they are constituted in any suitable manner, for example and as represented by FIG. 1, so that they include an air supply pump concentric with the engine cylinder a and communicating with the latter through intake ports b, the exhaust being through openings c also provided in the wall of the cylinder. cylinder.
As regards, now, the elements of the compression chamber to be included in the engine to be established, they are arranged in such a way that said chamber takes the form of a well d carried by the cylinder head (this encompassing term, either the cylinder bottom, ie the upper parts of its walls), and the injector e is placed at the bottom of this well in such a way that its jet passes through it along its length.
Advantageously, the well is given a depth greater than its average diameter, better still greater than one and a half times this diameter.
Arrangements are preferably made for the section of this well to grow slightly from its bottom to its open end, a shape which seems particularly favorable being an elongated frustoconical shape with an angle in the center relative to low (for example between 0 and 45).
It is of course possible to give the straight sections of the well any suitable shape, for example a circular shape.
Likewise, the well d can be placed in any suitable position; however, it seems particularly advantageous to arrange it coaxially with the cylinder so as to obtain a compression chamber which is of revolution about the axis of the injector.
We can then give the piston f a regular shape
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
@ and, preferably, it is made to include a slightly curved bottom.
Then also, to connect the opening of the well to the walls of the cylinder, a portion of annular wall substantially radial, or better, as shown in the drawings, a portion of by ± 1 annular g went steving, preferably progressively, the whole of the well d and of the wall g then affecting the shape of an acoustic horn, the greatest length of which would be dtangle at the weak center .- (well d) and the other part of which would progressively increase - sharply but very quickly in diameter.
If the bottom of the cylinder has been arranged in this way, the bottom of the piston will advantageously be given a shape such that by its peripheral part, it comes as close as practically possible, taking account of the expansions and fouling. - elements to be expected, of the annular wall.
The actual compression chamber is then limited to the space between the walls of the well d and the central part, preferably convex, of the bottom of the piston.
Under these conditions, the compression ratio considerations to be obtained will easily lead, in each particular case, to determining in an appropriate manner the various dimensions of the well d.
The shape of revolution of the compression chamber has just been described, lends itself, it will be understood, quite well to regular combustion, all the better as the well d has been sized so that it constitutes in a way, a cake for the jet of the injector, that it follows the shape of this jet, in order to allow a substantially homogeneous distribution of fuel in the compressed air.
This consideration can moreover lead to give to the generator parais of the well-d a non-rectilinear shape,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
for example a wavy shape.
We could also be led, instead of giving the well d an ever increasing shape, to decrease very slightly, from a certain section, the diameter of said well d, but this of course without going so far as to make the well of an outlet orifice in the cylinder which is throttled as is done in certain so-called "antechamber" engines.
As regards, now, the bottom of the piston, ¯ we can, of course, limit ourselves to giving it the convex shape of revolution just described. However, advantageously, it will be arranged in such a way that it guides the streams of air entering through the ports b to return them to the bottom of the cylinder in order to obtain a good sweep of the well d.
It will then be possible, in particular if the intake lights b are arranged in opposition to the exhaust ports c, to give the bottom of the piston T a dissymmetric shape to make it include a deflector. Of course, then, the shape of the annular wall y will be modified, so that said deflector is housed therein, the shape of the compression chamber proper not being substantially modified as a result, even if. 'we are led to slightly off-center it.
However, it seems preferable to keep the axis of symmetry formed by the axis of the cylinder as a whole. One is thus led to alternate, on the wall of the cylinder, the openings b and c, the former of course being arranged so as to be uncovered slightly later than the latter.
It is then advantageously made to include at the bottom of the piston passages h suitable for each coming opposite one of the openings b and for deflecting the incoming air streams upwards. The various passages h are therefore all convergent towards
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the center of the piston base and the parts separating two neighboring passages are advantageously reduced in this zone to simple closes as thin as possible (fig. 3).
It will then be understood that, if the bottom of the passages has been given a progressively curved longitudinal section terminating vertically in the center of the piston, the various jets of air will spring out, in the center of the piston bottom, all substantially along the line. axis of the cylinder.
The parts i of the piston base separating the passages will be used to guide the burnt gases towards the ports d.
They may advantageously, in certain cases, be separated from the passages h by small partitions arranged radially on the piston base, said partitions serving to prevent the mixing of the entering air with the burnt gases.
Of course, here again, the annular wall E can be given a shape corresponding to that of the annular part of the piston base, if it is desired to reduce the volume of the compression chamber to the volume of the well alone. d.
In any case, it is understood that the ignition of the fuel jet will be particularly good due, in particular, to the proximity of the hot walls of the well d.
This effect could moreover be increased if, as shown in FIG. 2, at least part of the walls of the well d is isolated from the cooling water surrounding the cylinder head.
For this purpose, for example, an annular chamber j is provided around these walls which is advantageously left filled with air or which is filled with another suitable insulating body, this chamber advantageously being able to be produced by welding a sheet wound in the form of a truncated cone, on the one hand, by its inner edge, at the periphery of the cylinder head, and, on the other hand, by its upper edge, at the periphery of a collar d1, integral well walls d.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Depending on the circumstances, either said chamber 1 may be made to rise to the vicinity of the bottom of the well d, or it will be stopped in height at a level below that of said bottom, in order to allow the cooling liquid to exert its action on the part of the breech which carries the injector a.
For the establishment of the cylinder head just described, use is advantageously made of one of the embodiments shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.
According to the first of these embodiments (fig. 1), having established the cylinder barrel open at its upper part, it is superimposed, with the interposition of a suitable gasket, a cylinder head carrying the well d, the bottom of the well being left open and being tapped, a clean injector holder k is established to be screwed into the tapping of the bottom of the well, this injector holder had a collar 1 by which it can come to rest in a sealed manner against the ceiling of the cooling jacket, the upper part of which is then established independently of that surrounding the cylinder barrel and connected to the latter by a seal.
According to the second of the aforementioned embodiments (fig. 2), the cylinder head, the well d and the injector holder are established in a single piece, for example made of steel, and the latter member is fitted towards its upper part, a collar m against which the ceiling of the cooling jacket can rest in a watertight manner, the jacket of which, here again, the upper part is established independently of that surrounding the cylinder barrel.
In any event, it can be seen that the injector holder can be arranged so as to bathe directly in the cooling liquid over the greater part of its length. We can also
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
their optionally provide it, on this part, with fins to activate the heat transmission.
Since the injection takes place directly against the bottom of the piston, said bottom will be brought to a relatively high temperature and it will be advantageous to provide means suitable for preventing the heat which reaches the bottom of the piston from ending up directly. towards the part of the side walls which carries the sealing segments, whereby the gumming of said segments will be greatly reduced.
.
For this purpose, for example, use will advantageously be made of a piston of the type shown in FIG. 2, and in which the connection between the bottom of the piston and the side walls of the latter is effected at a location in said lateral parts. rales that is below the level of the area bore the segments.
To achieve this result, in the thickness of the walls constituting the upper part of the piston skirt, a kind of groove n descending to below the lower limit of the zone bearing the segments is made, which is why, for example, , we establish the piston in two parts, one, o, which constitutes the skirt of the piston, therefore which carries at its upper part the sealing rings and, towards half of its height, the bearing surfaces for the connecting rod pin) and 1 + other, p, suitable for constituting the bottom of the piston and which is made to compact a kind of foot a suitable for being united with the part in a region located below the bearing zone segments,
said parts being established in such a way that an annular void of at least a few tenths of a mm. remains after assembly between the foot ¯q and the upper part of the walls of the skirt, said void being advantageously filled with an insulating body suitable as a sealant.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
Regardless of the embodiment adopted for the piston, at least the bearing surfaces for the small end pin will preferably be made of a very hard metal such as case-hardened steel, hardened steel, or special steel. By causing this very hard metal to act with a different hard metal, for example another grade of steel, of which we will constitute the small end pin, we will obtain a small end axle assembly which will resist particularly well to strong thrusts generated by the internal combustion cycle.
We will then preferably have recourse to pressure lubrication of the pearls of said axis.
Likewise, the bottom of the piston will preferably also be made of a metal which is very resistant to heat and retains its properties. mechanical qualities for high temperatures, for example of a steel of the kind used for making certain engine exhaust valves. It will thus be possible to achieve a piston base which is very light and yet resistant, although it is heated to a very high temperature.
It should be noted that the embodiment indicated above for the piston lends itself particularly well to the use of dissimilar metals for the skirt and the piston bottom.
According to this embodiment, the skirt o will be made of a suitable metal and the bottom.: 2 of another equally suitable metal.
As a result, an engine is obtained, the advantages and mode of operation of which emerge sufficiently from the foregoing that it is unnecessary to enter into their subject in any further explanation.
As goes without saying and as it emerges moreover already from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application, nor qutà want embodiments of its various parts, having more particularly been considered; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants.
