PROCEDE ET APPAREILS POUR LE TRAITEMENT DES HYDROCARBURES.
Pierre GUIOHARD
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
procédés ne semblent pas avoir donné les résultats attendus;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR THE TREATMENT OF HYDROCARBONS.
Pierre GUIOHARD
The present invention relates to a process for converting high boiling point hydrocarbons into lower boiling point hydrocarbons.
Processes of this kind were already known, according to which one seeks to bring all the oil molecules under the same physical conditions at the same given point of the treatment; according to some of these processes, the heavy oils are treated in sheets of very low thickness; according to the others, they are processed in tubes of very small diameter; but the devices established to date for the curing of one or the other of these
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
processes do not seem to have given the expected results;
this is due to the fact that, in these devices which comprise, two zones 1, a pre-heating zone and a reaction zone
1 the heating is sometimes excessive,
The reaction zone cannot be exactly delimited.
3 in the zone where the reaction of transformation of the hydrocarbons takes place, it often forms wise fouling or even coke deposits. So you have to clean the coils, resulting in an interruption of treatment, or even a shutdown of the installation *
In addition, with these devices, it is practically not possible to modify the flow rate of the installation, because it would be necessary to change either the seotion of the tubes or their length by varying the speed of the fluid being treated, or temperatures, and the variation of such parameters in an operation of this kind cannot be done with any certainty of the result.
The present invention relates to a method intended to remedy these drawbacks and comprising all or part of the following characteristics 1
1 the preheating and the transformation of heavy hydrocarbons are carried out in devices separate from each other.
2 the preheating of the heavy hydrocarbons is carried out gradually, the temperature difference between each heating wall and the hydroarbons being low at all points of the heating circuit, so as to avoid any instantaneous overheating of the hydrooarijurea molecules which are in contact with this wall,
30 the preheating of heavy hydrocarbons essentially comprises one or more bubbling of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
heavy hydrocarbons in their own mass, each of these bubbling determining a mixing such that all the molecules are brought under identical physical conditions, from the point of view of their movements, their temperatures and their pressures.
4 the preliminary heating of the heavy hydrocarbons is pushed to a temperature close to the temperature of transformation of these heavy hydrocarbons into light hydrocarbons.
5 the chemical transformation of these heavy hydrocarbons into light hydrocarbons is carried out in a series of reactors mounted in parallel and each of which has a small cross section, all these capacities operating under the same conditions with respect to each other. .
By the use of mediums, the mass of circulating oil is small and the transformation of heavy hydro-carbons into light hydrocarbons can be carried out under optimum conditions; pre-heaters and converters may have characteristics which fulfill their special functions and allow slow and gradual heating of heavy hydrocarbons and, subsequently, rapid transformation of these into light hydrocarbons. In addition, there is also the possibility of instantly remedying any disturbance occurring in the execution of the transformation and without it resulting in stoppage in it.
The subject of the present invention is also the apparatus and installations that can be established for the implementation of the method and the means defined above, among them, it more particularly relates to those in which
1 the heating installation comprises a) one or more heating coils receiving the oils to be treated,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
b) one or more mixing bubbling receptacles each of which is provided with an oil inlet tube descending to the bottom of this receptacle and an oil outlet tube extending from the top of this receptacle.
2 each of the basic oil transformation capacities is: a) accessible in operation, b) fitted with devices for shutting off the transformation circuit s) view of a device allowing its dismantling during operation of other elements, openings provided in the walls of the heating chamber in such a way that this capacity can be replaced by another similar opacity laying this step of the other elements, d) made up of successive sections formed of tubas! a separately interchangeable, ss provided with access plugs to the interior of said tubes.
3 each of these elementary capacities is provided t a) with enorassage warning devices b) with cleaning means making it possible to clean this capacity during the operation of the other elements, these internal cleaning means being able to be put into action! Ó by hand, ss automatically.
4 the means for cleaning each treatment capacity may consist of a source of pressurized fluid and a distributor mounted between this capacity and this source, this distributor being able to be actuated by hand or automatically and after removing this capacity from the circuit of hydrocarbon processing
5 a by-pass mounted between the heating devices
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
and the supply tank of the installation with hydrocarbons, this bypass allowing), in combination with appropriate valves, the switching off of all the basic transformation capacities.
The attached schematic drawings given by way of example and which in no way limit the scope of the present invention show:
Fig. 1, a vertical section along line 1-1 of figure 2 of an installation established in accordance with the principles defined above. Fig 2 a view, part in plan, part in section along line 11-11 of Figure 1 of the installation of Fig. 1 Fig 3, a profile view, part in section, along line III-III of Figure 1. of the dismal installation.
In these various figures, the same reference signs designate the same elements.
In the description which will now be given of this installation as well as in the description of its operation, it will be assumed that usual heavy oils are treated, although this installation also makes it possible to treat the whole range of oils. mineral, as well as oils obtained at low temperature from lignites or shales. fig 1, - 1 is the tank containing the heavy oil to be treated; 2 is a pipe bringing this oil to a pump which sends it, under pressure, into the treatment circuit, which comprises:
I.- the device for preparing the oil.
II.- the oil transformation device.
1 Oil preparation device.
It has the following elements:
1 a heater 4 having the shape of a coil arranged in a heating chamber 5, the oil comes out of this
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
coil at a temperature of approximately 300 c.
2 a tube 6 receiving this oil and emerging at the bottom of a first heating mixer vessel 7 completely filled with oil, this dip tube 6 has a low cross section by ra, pport to the horizontal section of the vessel 7 the arrival speed oil in this container is large and this results in vigorous bubbling in the lower part of this container} the dimensions of the container 7 horizontal section and height, the section of the dip tube 6 and the arrival speed of the oil through this tube are regulated in such a way that the mixing of the oil which arrives and of the oil which is contained in the container is completely carried out in the lower part of the container, for example,
in the lower third of the height of this container, so that, in the upper part of this container, the various horizontal layers of oil are perfectly homogeneous from the physical point of view, that is to say, in each of them, the various molecules have the same temperature, the same increasing speed and the same pressure.
The oil leaving this heater mixer through the µ tube is therefore an oil in which all the molecules are in the same physical conditions.
3 the second dip tube 6 starting from the upper part of the reservoir 7 and leading the oil leaving this reservoir to the bottom of a second heating mixer vessel 9 which acts similarly to the first. the oil molecules leaving this second heating mixer are therefore always in the same physical conditions.
These heating mixing vessels 7 and 9 are mounted in the heating chamber 5, the oil leaving the vessel 9 is at a temperature of 380 so that, on the one hand, no destructive reaction of this kind.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
oil could not take place and that, on the other hand, a very low calorie supply and a very short time now suffices to determine the reaction of transformation of heavy hydrocarbons into light hydrocarbons.

openings 12 being reserved in the walls of the heating chamber 13 for this disassembly and this total or partial replacement of each element 12, in the case of openings 12 being, in normal operation, closed by shutters
7 a coolant 17 disposed at the outlet of each reaction element 12, this coolant possibly being constituted, for example, by a coil, a valve 17- 'being mounted at one end of this coolant or at each of its ends and allowing,
in combination with valves 14 or 14 'to switch each element 12 on or off *

9 a pipe 19 for evacuating the products collected in the manifold 18 and a valve 20 for adjusting the pressure in the circuit, this valve making it possible, for example, to establish the pressure at 45 Kg. Per cm2 in the above-considered oas .
10 a first separator 21 of the products of the transformation reaction, this separator being provided with a) a pipe 22 for returning untransformed or recycled oils "to the starting tank 1 for further treatment, a bypass 23 with valve 24 which can be mounted on this pipe 22 for heating the oven. !! and the entire installation, b) a pipe 25 for driving the lighter products.

With the help of an installation of this kind, it is possible to transform the entire range into lightweight products.

During normal walking, and with slightly asphaltic oils, no ooke deposit is observed in the devices.
In the case of very asphaltic oils or in the case of tars at low temperature, encressing may occur at the end of a more or less long time; this enorassage is located in the reaction elements 12
To remedy this drawback, according to the present invention, the elements 12 can be cleaned in full operation, either by hand or automatically.
For this purpose, each element 12 is combined with: a) clogging warning devices these devices comprising: Ó a pyrometer 31, ss monitoring devices, for example visual or acoustic, not shown, placed under the control of this pyrometer, these devices possibly comprising, for example, a recording galvanometer, buzzer, lamp, etc., b) a purge valve 32 and a purge manifold 33 c a channel 34 for admission of a pressurized cleaning fluid t steam or other, this channel being provided with a feed distributor 35 or valve or other 35 connected to a manifold 36 or 36 'of fluid under pressure t steam, for example.
When enorassage occurs in a tube, the outlet temperature given by pyrometer 31 of this tube immediately decreases. The galvanometer and the control devices sound the alarm.
In the case of a hand control, the maneuver is as follows t
The valve 14 for admission of the hydrocarbon into the damaged casing is closed. We open its purge valve 32 and

the oil contained is collected in its purge tank 35. The valve 35 is opened and the jet of steam introduced into the enorassé element 12 perfectly cleanses the interior of this element. We then act on the valves in the reverse order *
The maneuver is fast and requires only one operator.
In the case of automatic control of the scouring, all oes operations are carried out automatically, the valves 32 and 35 then being able to be constituted by spools actuated by a pressurized fluid.
All of the transformation elements 12 can be switched off using a bypass 37 provided with a valve 38, the oil remaining from the second mixer 9 being, then, returned directly to the tank.
A pyrometer 39 can, of course, be mounted at the end of the last mixer; each mixer can also be provided.
A flue 40 sends into the heating chamber 5 the burnt gases from the hearth 13 oeux-oi 'exit from the chamber 6 at 41.
The speed of passage of the oils in the processing elements 12 is regulated by the flow rate imposed on the pump 3 and is such that the residence time of these oils in the elements 12 is very short, of the order of approximately two minutes *
