<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Automobile headlight swivel device
This invention relates to a device for automatically rotating the headlights of automobiles in the momentary direction of travel by means of a liquid control system.
The object of the invention is to improve the headlight pivoting device by adding safety and adjustment devices, of simple construction and inexpensive to establish, in such a way: a) that in the event of accidental disturbances in the operation of the headlight swivel device,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
For example, in the event of jamming, this device is not damaged, warped or made unsuitable for operation, and that (the same way the steering of the motor vehicle itself cannot be compromised by similar functional irregularities- b) that, in addition,
the device (the pivoting of the headlights can be switched on or off at any time by means of a simple lever,. and c) which can be changed quickly and without difficulty within specified limits the ratio between the pivoting of the headlights and the pivoting of the front wheels of the vehicle, i.e. the magnitude of the momentary deflection angle of the headlights, for example in such a way that the headlights take a little lead when deviating from their central position , and already light up the curve of the road before the front wheels have been fully turned.
The invention is explained below with reference, for ease of understanding, to the accompanying drawing, which shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the improved device for pivoting the headlights.
Figure 1 shows the device in side elevation and partially in section.
Figures 2 and 2a are plan views, partially in section.
Figures 3 to 5 show cut away and seen from the side and from above, on an enlarged scale, the coupling, elastic, as well as the device for engaging and
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
to disengage the headlight pivoting device in working position and in rest position.
The headlight pivoting device comprises a liquid control member, in particular a cylinder 10 (Figures 1, 2, .2a), filled with glycerin or another liquid which is difficult to freeze, and pistons 11, 12 which can move in this cylinder and subjected to the action of pressure springs
21, 22, one of these pistons 11 being joined by a connecting rod 31 to the steering linkage of the vehicle while the other piston 12 is joined to the headlights by a connecting rod 32.
According to the invention, a resilient safety coupling is provided between the liquid control member and the steering linkage of the vehicle, which automatically disengages as soon as a headlight pivoting device occurs in operation. . disturbance, for example jamming, and as soon as the resistance generated by this fact exceeds a determined value, which can be adjustable.
In the exemplary embodiment shown, the safety coupling comprises a disc 85 with a drive tooth. bevelled or rounded in the manner of a permanent assembly, this disc engaging (as shown in Figures 3 to 5) in the correspondingly notched hub of the control lever 65 of the headlamp pivoting device, in thus coupling the pivot device with the steering linkage.
To this end, the toothed drive disc 85 is screwed onto the steering journal-55 by means of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
a rod 86 which is integral with this disc and which is pinned at 87. On the rod 86 is mounted, so as to be able to rotate freely and to be able to slide, the control lever 65 subjected to the action of a res - exit 66.
As soon as you turn the steering journal
55 by means of the shaft 50 of the steering wheel and the usual worm transmission 51-52, the headlights 60,61 rotate when the safety coupling is engaged '(figures 2 and 4) If, however, for following an unforeseen accident, the headlight swivel device gets stuck or is rendered unsuitable for operation, the vehicle can still be steered, because the drive tooth disc 85 in this case pushes the control lever 65 outwards.
With this safety coupling is further combined a special release device, by means of which the headlight swivel device can be switched off at any time from the driver's seat.
In the present example embodiment, this disengaging device comprises a sleeve 95 which can oscillate and provided with an arm 96, this sleeve freely surrounding the drive tooth disc 85 and pressing against the hub of the lever. control 65. The oscillating bush 95 is supported by its rear end notched at 97 against a fixed cam 7 with an oblique active surface.
@ If you turn the sleeve 95 using the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
arm 96 subjected to the action of a tension spring 98, for example by means of a Bowden cable 93 actuated from the driver's seat and by means of the handle 92, the socket 95 pushes the control lever 65 to against the spring 66 in the rest position shown in Figure 4.
If the Bowden cable 93 is slackened, the sleeve 95 yields to the pull of the spring 98, returns back and engages the control lever 65 with the drive tooth disc 85, so that the pivoting device of the headlights is put back into operation.
It has also been observed that it is necessary to be able to adjust the pivot angle of the headlights, that is to say to adjust their momentary deviation from the deflection of the front wheels, when the vehicle is steered in a direction. curve.
For this purpose, it is interposed according to the invention, between. the liquid control mechanism 10-11-12 and the headlights, a gear with variable transmission ratio in the present exemplary embodiment, a rack transmission 33-34 with crank arm 35 of variable length .
If we move the crank pin 36 and therefore the coupling rod 37 leading to the headlight control (as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 2a), the pivot angle of the headlights with respect to the deviation of the headlights is modified. front wheels or in relation to the steering linkage of the vehicle, so that the headlights can thus be given advance to oblige them to illuminate a curve in the road before the front wheels of the vehicle have been fully turned
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
in the direction of the bend or turn.
Numerous modifications can be made to the construction of the headlight pivoting device of the type described above without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention.
Thus, instead of the crank arm 35 with adjustable crank pin 36, an equivalent mechanism can be placed at another location of the pivoting device, and even directly on the pivot axis of the headlight 60.
