<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
combustible ainsi que la durée d'admission d'air et en réglant correspondamment le refroidissement etc. on peut également trans- former le combustible d'une granulation plus ou/moins fine, en mor- ceaux ou mottes résistants.On peut traiter de cette manière par exemple le coke menu;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"PROCESS OF COKEFACTION OR DISTILLATIDN OF FUELS"
The distillation or coking of fuels has already been carried out in such a way that the distillation residue was partially gasified or burnt. With the resulting heat the distillation was carried out, for example in such a way that the fuel to be distilled was passed through the gasification or combustion gases.
The invention is based on the discovery that it is possible to perform at the same time, in the same fuel layer,
EMI1.1
partial combustion or gasification which produces lacha3.eurj. .i> 1 ">" '' JQ- for distillation or coking, and coking or distillation itself. According to the invention, the fuel
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
is for example spread on a grid in a more or less thin layer in such a way that air can pass through it by pressure or suction. By applying the air stream, the surface layer of the fuel through which the air enters is first ignited 'place'. After ignition, air is passed for a period of time through the fuel, by pressure or suction, and thus distillation or coking is produced.
It has been found that by proceeding in this manner, a dry distillation first takes place without the fuel.
EMI2.1
tible no longer burned furtive nor toialomuni and any place.,
When the heat penetrates to a certain depth in the fuel bed, the already distilled or coked fuel layers are, in accordance with the invention, cooled, in order to prevent the combustion which is now starting. Cooling can be done in different ways, for example by using water. However, it is also possible to effect cooling by passing a strong current of air through the fuel by pressure or suction or by mixing inert gases with the air.
It is possible to operate in batches, using grids on which the fuel is placed depending on its nature in layers having a thickness for example of 3 - 50 cm.
The time per charge is very short, it comprises for example 5-50 minutes, so that, even with this simple arrangement, excessively high flow rates can be achieved. However, it is more efficient to use a rolling grille, for example of the type found in Dwight-Lloyd devices.
In this case the fuel is first ignited at a place more or less close to the loading place, then it is subjected for a certain time to the action of the air sucked through the layer and finally it is cools. Coking or distillation and cooling can however be done
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
also, partially or totally, at the same time in superimposed fuel layers.,
While with a simple grate, on which the fuel rests, the treated load can be removed from the grate at intervals, for example by tilting the grate, it is removed from a rolling grate in a naturally continuous manner. the location of the spill.
Given that with the process according to the invention, only a very small part of the fuel (approximately 1 - 2%) is burned for carrying out the distillation or coking, a very good tar yield is obtained at the same time.
The blowing as well as the suction of air into or through the fuel bed can be done from the side of the layer touching the grate or from the opposite side. Likewise, ignition can take place on the grate side or on the free surface of the fuel bed, regardless of the manner in which the distillation or coking is carried out.
Depending on whether the air is drawn in or forced out from above or from below through the fuel bed, it can be adapted above. 1) layer of fuel or below the grid of the caps or capture boxes in order to recover the volatile distillation products which are released from the fuel o In these capture boxes, the said volatile products are brought into the devices known for the separation of tar and light oil, after which the fuel gases not condensing can be used in the known manner for heating or other like purposes.
The fuel is advantageously processed to a finely granulated form. and the distillation and coking plants are provided according to the invention, advantageously with all the devices which have been shown to be effective for the roasting and sintering of ores. Thus, for example, the same loading, distribution and discharge devices and the same grid arrangements can be used as with the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
known Dwight-Lloyd devices and it is also possible to form the finely granulated coal similar to the ore, for example by wetting it or else to use special layers of the same materials or other granulated materials already distilled or coked preventing from fuel to pass through the grate.
Of course the collection and evacuation devices for the gases under the rolling grate can also be subdivided and each division can be provided with special blowers so that as the distillation or coking takes place. 'In fact, gases, tars and oils of different compositions can be recovered separately.
The distillation or coking gases from each division can also be passed through the fuel layer of that same division or the layer of one or more other divisions, in any desired order. It is also possible to mix with air, by passing through the fuel, other gases, for example water vapor, carbonic acid or other combustible gases and non-combustible resulting from the process itself or from the outside, thus influencing the process as well as the product in a definite direction.
According to the invention, the most diverse fuels can be treated, such as lignite, coal, oil shale. The process gives coke mainly in lumps or pieces. Similar coke is obtained, for example, also directly with fuels which, such as fatty or lean coals of old or old formation, hitherto could not, or could only with great difficulty, be turned into coke.
The process according to the invention can also be changed so as to produce only mainly lumps or pieces of fuel without removing from the latter some of the volatile matter. By properly calculating the quantity of air or the like that is passed through the layer of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
fuel as well as the duration of the air intake and correspondingly regulating the cooling etc. it is also possible to transform the fuel of a more or / less fine granulation, into resistant pieces or lumps. Small coke can be treated in this way, for example;
coke ash, from fine anthracite or from fine coal, but also more recent or younger fuels, not coked or distilled, such as lignites, bituminous coals and the like, can be transformed into lumps or lumps. If part of the volatile matter escapes during the operation, this can only be advantageous because the calorific power of the fuel is considerably increased. O The gases which are released from the fuel only mainly contain water and carbonic acid and little combustible material.
Since in this way only a part of their volatile matter is extracted according to the invention, for example, from younger fuels, these fuels become suitable for many uses for which they could not hitherto be used.
Young fuels intended to be thus transformed into lumps or pieces are preferably treated after prior drying.
Finely or coarsely granulated lignite, for example, is transformed according to this variant of the process into a fuel in lumps or pieces having a higher calorific power than that of the usual briquettes of lignite, without having the drawback of coke ash which is hardly usable for heating.
Small coke at low temperature can be transformed into lumps or pieces of great value. It thereby loses its high degree of spontaneous flammability without losing any of its high combustibility.
The combustible gases which result from the process according to the invention can be used in many cases in the process itself, they can for example be used for drying
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
fuels to be treated beforehand in combustion gas dryers. They can also be used to heat the air, or as a means of heating value boilers which produce the mechanical energy necessary for the process according to the invention.
Also, the invention can still be carried out in such a way that a high production of fuel gases results while allowing to occur simultaneously with the coking or the distillation or partial gasification of the fuel.
Coking or distillation as well as the transformation into lumps or pieces according to the invention can of course also be applied to mixtures of fuels. For example, two or more fuels which differ in volatile matter content, water content or non-combustible (ash) content are mixed together so that the finished product acquires, for example, a maximum heat output. , or maximum strength, or optimum for lumps or lumps, or they can be processed for the best (high or low) tar yield. The mixtures can of course also be chosen in such a way that the process gives several or all of the desired results at the same time.
In addition, materials other than fuel, for example lime, silicic acid or other oxidized or sulphurized metallic or non-metallic compounds, can be added to the fuel or to the fuel mixture.
Good results can also be obtained by placing several fuels on the grid, not in mixture but in layers.
The accompanying drawing shows by way of example one embodiment of the invention.
The materials to be processed, for example fine coal or a mixture of different coal species, for example fine fatty coal and fine lignite, are in hopper 1.
If it is advantageous in certain cases - with a view to a good distribution of the air, - to work with an intermediate layer on the grid, this layer can be applied on
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
a small thickness on the rolling grid, 9 by the hopper 2.
The fine coal or the mixture of fine coals, which in most cases can be pre-wetted, is discharged from hopper I so as to form a layer of suitable thickness on the intermediate layer or directly on the rolling grate.
The ignition furnace starts the process of coking and degasification or combustion; by sucking in air in an amount appropriate to the intended purpose, the process advances in the direction of the grille.
The suction boxes 4 are connected by means of pipes with blowers which suck the reaction gases. The strainers 5distributed over the entire length of the rolling screen allow the adjustment of the process especially from the point of view of temperatures and the cooling of the finished coke. The finished product falls over the unloading grid 6 into the transport wagon 8. The waste coke at the landfill passes through the screen 6 into the collecting hopper 7 from where it can be removed.
The rolling gate, as such, is designated by the reference numeral 9.
