<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

New process for making alcohols, in particular methyl and ethyl alcohols, usable as fuel and product obtained.
The present invention relates to a process for making alcohols usable as fuel and the product obtained by the implementation of this prpcédé.
The observed development of automobile and air transport has brought attention to the possibility of using alcohol as fuel.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
used alone, these bodies have so far not given satisfaction to consumers because of their low efficiency and the difficulty of starting.
An exception must be made, however, for hot countries, South Africa for example, where their employment has rendered services; it was the same in Germany during the world war.
Methyl and ethyl alcohols have been the most widely used, but as we have said with low yield. Ethyl alcohol or common alcohol, although it has a calorific value one third less than that of light oils, becomes an excellent fuel for internal combustion engines when properly prepared. Its use makes it possible to advantageously increase the compression without running the risk of untimely self-ignition.
This increase in compression increases the thermodynamic efficiency of the engine and therefore translates into a benefit. If we indeed consider benzine (petroleum gasoline) from the point of view of its use in explosions engines, we find that the volume of the explosive mixture at the start of the compression phase is at the volume at the end of said phase in the ratio of 5 to 1. This compression ratio of 5 is a maximum; the theoretical yield is then 47%.
The use of alcohol enables this ratio to be increased to 8 and the yield is raised to about 58%.
Also, since the alcohol molecule contains about 50% by weight oxygen, a certain alcohol-air mixture will be richer in oxygen than a benzine-air mixture which contains the same volume of air. and since the oxygen attached to the alcohol molecule takes part in the thermochemical process, the amount of air
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
necessary for the combustion of a kilogram of alcohol will be less than that which it would take to burn a @ilogram of benzine. This fact obviously improves combustion, it allows to burn with a certain volume of air more alcohol than benzine, so that despite the substantial difference between the calorific value of alcohol and that of gasoline, the power output of the engine and its specific power come to be practically equal.
In addition, from the point of view of consumption by weight. by HP the alcohol consumption ratio per HP hour ------------------------------------- benzine consumption by HP hour is not the inverse of the calorific value ratio, but is lower by virtue of the greater thermodynamic efficiency of the engine resulting from the possibility available to increase the compression ratio for the air-vapor mixture d 'alcohol.
The yield could be further improved by introducing into the explosive mixture active substances, additional oxygen for example, and substances which increase the calorific value, such as hydrogen, for example. These bodies were listed in part in a previous patent relating to the use as fuel of nitro derivatives of hydrocarbons and of compounds containing unstable oxygen, that is to say nitrogen, hydrazot and hydrogen derivatives. In the present case we have. used either nitronaphthalene and the corresponding hydrogenated derivative or nitronaphthalene and hydrazobenzene; however, this list is not exhaustive and this patent also claims the use of similar compounds for the same purpose.
There remained another problem to be solved: it was a question of enriching the solution without giving rise, at the time of the explosion, to the formation of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
harmful and irritating gases, such as acetic acid and formaldehyde, and without introducing ordinary neutralizers with amine and ammonia function; it was also necessary to suppress irregular explosions.
This result was obtained by introducing into the mixture a certain quantity of benzol and hydrogenated naphthalin (tetra, naphthalene penta decahydride) which is on the market at a relatively low price and for which a very economical preparation process has is the subject of another patent. The introduction of this body also has the advantage of increasing the calorific value of the mixture. The formula of the mixture can vary according to the wishes of the manufacturer.
The following formula, for example, gives a good yield.

<tb>
At equal volumes, this formula gives a yield of 20 o / o greater than that of benzine and does not present any inconvenience to the engine.
It is necessary to make the mixtures slightly fatty, which is obtained by adding to them a certain proportion of heavy gasolines or heavy oils.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The fuel thus obtained offers the very great advantage of not necessitating modifications to ordinary carburettors, it is almost completely miscible with ordinary gasoline, and can be used in its place without hindering operation. Finally, it has the following advantages over other fuels:
1). the lubrication of the cylinders is done in a very efficient way, without decomposition or alteration / lubricating oils.
2). It makes the running of the engine more flexible.
3). It does not emit any smoke and does not produce carbon deposits in the engine.
4). The danger of fire is avoided because the mixture ignites only with difficulty at ordinary temperatures and because its vapor pressure is low. if in all probability the mixture should burn, it would be easy to extinguish it with water.
It only freezes at 15 below -15 The high flammability of the spray mixture allows the engine to be started without any modification or adaptation being necessary to the carburetor.
The characteristics of the mixture obtained according to formula II are as follows; Specific gravity at 150 0.820 Flash point below normal temperature.
Boiling point (beginning 78 -80) 1200 (above in contact with air it decomposes).
Thiretically required air: cubic meters 8.3 Lower calorific value 10,200
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Higher calorific value 10800 Vapor pressure per dm2 gr. 16.5
What has just been explained for ethyl alcohol also applies to methyl alcohol except that the percentages of activator and of naphthalin hydride are different.
Fuels can be prepared with methyl alcohol alone, - or with a mixture of ethyl and methyl alcohol.
Benzol is necessary, as we have said, to give the engine flexibility.

It has been found that the addition of small amounts of a poly-nitro derivative of a polyalcohol (eg tetra-nitrated erythritis) to the addition of a derivative of a carbohydrate (eg. example of nitro-sucrose or nitro-mannose ') to mixtures obtained in the manner indicated
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
quée previously, has a stabilizing action on them.
This addition increases their expansive power and consequently the yield; moreover, these bodies have a great anti-knock power.
Of the large series of compounds indicated above, the most suitable is tetra-nitrated erythritis, it can be obtained very economically, according to another patent of the applicant. Nitro-saccha- rose and nitromannose behave identically.
