PERFECTIONNEMENTS AU REFROIDISSEMENT DES REDRESSEURS A VAPEUR :DE MERCURE A ENVELOPPE DE VERRE. -
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
côté du bras doux passagos étanchos tels quo 4.
On peut alors utiliser au contrôle do l'amorçago do l'arc la grillo la plus rapprochée do l'anodo, la plus éloignéo étant uti- liséo à débarrasser la vapeur neutre do l'ionisation para. sito qu'elle ronformo; dans oo but, on réunira par exemple los doux grilles à des sources do tension alternative de môme phaso, la grille la plus rapprochée do l'anode étant soumise à la tension la plus élevée, par rapport à la oathodo, do manière à diriger les électrons vers l'anode lors de la commando do l'amorçago. ,
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
REVENDICATIONS
Perfectionnements destinés à faciliter le re- froidissement do la chambre de condensation des redresseurs à vapeur do mercure et à éviter qu'un refroidissement in- tempostif no provoque la condensation du mercure au voi- sinago immédiat des anodes, ce qui aurait pour effet de faciliter la formation do court-circuits internes.

IMPROVEMENTS IN THE COOLING OF STEAM RECTIFIERS: FROM MERCURY TO GLASS ENVELOPE. -
We know that the power of glass bulb morouro steam rectifiers is limited by the heating of certain parts of it; in order to increase the available power, use is generally made of devices which create a circulation of fluid, liquid or gas, around the bulb. In the devices known hitherto, we have been satisfied with moving the fluid, without sufficient concern to adapt the shapes of the bulb to the intended purpose to facilitate this movement and improve the cooling efficiency. Mountain.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention consists of a set of arrangements suitable for adapting the device to one another. fluid motor and the rectifier bulb in their shape and relative arrangement so as to energetically cool the interesting parts of the rectifier and to subtract the others from cooling, while reducing the risks of shutdown by short -internal circuit.
Typically used rectifier bulbs are formed of an ovoid condensing chamber, the smaller diameter end being located at the lower part of the working position. The main anode arms and the various appendages for starting and maintaining the arc are welded to the lower side walls. The arrangement generally adopted for the cooling-mount is represented by FIG. 1: it consists in the use of a helical fan with vertical axis 1, placed under the bulb 2 and blowing from the bottom up on it.
This arrangement has various drawbacks: in the first place, the air streams emitted by the propeller no follow the generators of the condensation chamber until the equatorial part 3. Beyond that, they detach from the bulb. , which leaves in the air stream of the fan a region of dormant fluid 4. The part of the bulb surmounting the square, then being bathed in an almost immobile fluid, therefore does not contribute to cooling. In addition, the anode arms 5, struck by the air current, impede the movement of the latter and further reduce the ventilation of the condensation chamber. It is true that attempts have been made to guide the air streams towards the bulb by the use of deflectors, but this arrangement is not very effective.
It is different, and this is one of the objects of the present invention, if it is arranged so that the ovoid condensation chamber presents its end of large
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
air current diameter. In the accompanying figures, a few embodiments according to the present invention have been shown by way of example.
Referring to Figure 2, a rectifier bulb 6, having the shape generally adopted, is surmounted by a helical fan 7. In this arrangement, aerodynamic experiments show that the streams of air emitted by the fan follow. without difficulty the generators of the condensing chamber 6 to their full extent, thus completely enveloping it in streams of high speed air, and thus placing it in excellent cooling conditions, at the same time. except for a very restricted area of the upper part. In addition, the wake that the anodo arms can leave in the air stream is no longer a problem for the cooling of the other parts of the bulb.
It goes without saying that all the devices suitable for facilitating the adhesion of the air streams to the condensation chamber can be used, in particular those represented in FIG. 3. With reference to FIG. 3, there is represented an ampoule 8 whose condensation chamber, constructed according to the data of aerodynamic technique, has the shape of a surface of revolution generated by a continuously variable curve of the radius of curvature. The efficiency of the fan 9 is improved by the use of a propeller 10 of which only short blades are used, the central part being formed by a disc.
The eddies in the vicinity of the helicopter are eliminated by the use of deflectors 11 and 13; the deflector 12 returns the air streams towards the condensation chamber, while diverting them from the upper parts 16 of the node arms, the excessive cooling of which is dangerous. The intake of fresh air can be facilitated by the hull 14,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
ot the nozzle 15 terminating if necessary outside the room heated by the operation of the rectifier.
We could, instead of moving the fan, keep the usual position of it, provided that the shape of the bulb is adapted to this case: referring to figure 4, we see a bulb provided with a condensing chamber 17 ovoid with a large end directed downwards. Under these conditions, the air streams emitted by the propeller of the fan 18 adhere well to the generatrices of the condensation chamber, and the wake left by the arms is much less harmful than in the usual arrangement.
The application of these provisions is not limited to the case of air cooling, but can also be done in that of cooling by liquid circulation.
The energetic cooling of the whole of the bulb is a necessary condition, but not sufficient, for the good operation of this one: experience shows, in fact, that every time a neck is allowed to establish itself. - rant of neutral vapor heading towards the anode in the arms which enclose the glue, thus promoting internal short circuits.
This circumstance occurs, in particular, whenever the anode compartment, and especially the part located behind it, is brought to a temperature lower than the neighboring parts of the anode arm. or from the condensing chamber: under these conditions, a continuous distillation of mercury is established towards the node compartment. It is advisable to prevent at all costs the establishment on the walls of the anode compartment, of a temperature lower than that of the rest of the bulb, even during variations duos with the load fluctuations of the rectifier.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
sister.
For this purpose, the walls of the anode compartment must be removed from cooling: this can be obtained either by the use of fluid flow deflectors, such as 12 in FIG. 3, or by the use of a heat-insulating, or by these two means simultaneously.
The insulation used must have the lowest possible heat capacity, so as not to delay the heating of the walls during an increase in the load on the rectifier, resulting in an increase in temperature.
EMI5.1
lt warming up. "
The present invention comprises a device using for this purpose a double wall, with an air gap annulairo around the anodo. The appended figures will provide a better understanding of the principle of the invention.
FIG. 5 shows the upper part of a glass rectifier anode arm, provided with an embodiment of the device in question: the anode 19, which it has been advantageous to hollow out to reduce its heat capacity. , is surrounded by a thin tube 20, of any substance, glass or metal, fixed at 21 to the outer wall 22 by any means, welding or stapling. The tube is arranged so as to heat up as quickly as possible under the effect of the radiation from the anode: for this purpose, the internal wall of the tube may be blackened, with a view to more energetic absorption of the radiation. , the outer wall may instead be covered with a low-emissive power coating such as a polished metal, unassailable to mercury.
The part of the inner tube placed behind the anode can be obstructed by a specially shaped tube 23, carried on the current inlet and allowing the latter to be mounted from the upper floor. This provision can be replaced by any other equivalent, the essential being the obstruction.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
yours almost complete of the compartment behind the anode. Figures 6 and 7 show two embodiments in this sound, the first comprising the use of a disc 24 fixed to the current inlet, the second using a tube 25 fixed thereto.
In all these arrangements, the outer tube forming the vacuum-tight wall may be covered in addition with a polished metal sheet (indicated at 26 in FIG. 5) opposing the radiation from the anode, and promoting the initiation of the arc glued to it by its electrical connection to the current input 27.
The need to prevent the establishment of a stream of neutral vapor directed to the anode further results in the arrangement on the anode arm of cooled compartments for condensing the neutral vapor before it can reach the anode. It is possible to take advantage of the presence of a double wall to spare these condensation chambers in the annular space. FIG. 8 shows an embodiment of this system, using an inner tube 28 fixed without welding in the arm.
This tube is held by springs 29, which can flex when it is introduced through the lower part 30 of the arm, before the latter is closed again; in addition, a coil spring 31 completely immobilizes the inner tube. The neutral vapor condensation chamber is formed by the space 32 between the inner tube 28 and the outer wall 33, suitably enlarged. Since the bulb is cooled by one of the preceding fluid displacement arrangements, the outer walls of this chamber are in good cooling conditions.
The passage of the arc through an inner tube not constituting the sealed wall of the rectifier also allows
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
to remedy the following drawback: during internal short-circuits, we sometimes observe the production, from the anode, of extremely hot flames which, in contact with the walls of the bulb and especially at the elbows of the arms , cause cracking of the glass; in the present arrangement, these could only occur on the inner tube, at point 34 and would in no way compromise the seal of the bulb, thus avoiding any cause of destruction.
FIG. 9 also shows an embodiment of an anode arm according to the same principle: the inner tube 35, fixed in the same way as the tube 28 of FIG. 8, is formed at the end 36, 1 ' lateral opening 37 allowing the passage of the arc and the hole 38 the flow of the mercury condensed inside the tube 35. The condensing chamber 39 of the arm is welded directly to that of the bulb, and is therefore in the best ventilation conditions.
One can also use the internal wall (the annular space to support one or more conductive grids which can be used, either to improve the operation of the rectifier, or for its use, one or more back grids are used. then transforming into relay control electrodes.
Figures 10 and 11 show this embodiment.
The heat-insulating envelope is formed by the empty space between the outer casing 41 and the inner tube 42; this is pierced, in the plane of a straight section, with a series of holes 43, in which the grillo passes, constituted by a metal wire, unassailable to mercury vapor, such as a wire of iron, nickel, molybdenum or tungsten, arranged for example to manage to form mail-
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
the squares. One end of the wire is joined to a lateral sealed metal passage 44, making the electrical connection of the grid with the exterior.
The anode 45, located at the bottom of the inner container, is fixed to the current inlet 46, a refractory part 47 of suitable shape obstructing the communication with the space 48, limited by walls subjected directly to cooling. by the external fluid.
During a sudden load setting of the rectifier, or a sudden increase in its load, the anode 45 heats up, by its radiation, the wall 42 more quickly than any other part of the bulb can heat up, so that at no time, for moderate overloads, can a neutral vapor current directed towards the anode be established. Placing the grid in the insulated part therefore protects it against the parasitic ionization carried by the neutral vapor stream. If the grid is used to control the initiation of the arc, its operation will therefore be improved by this arrangement eliminating parasitic ionization, the main cause of disturbance.
However, experience shows that, for strong overloading of the rectifier, a neutral vapor flow can still be established for a moment towards the anode despite the thermal insulation of the latter; the grid can then be used to rid the stream of neutral vapor of the parasitic ionization which it carries; it suffices for this to join it to the anode by means of an external resistor.
The previous construction process applies without modification to the case of multiple grids, arranged in different straight sections: to make for example an arc relay with two grids, it would suffice to drill the internal wall of soft rows of holes; plan on
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
side of the soft arm airtight passagos such as 4.
The grillo closest to the anode can then be used to control the arc initiation, the farthest away being used to rid the neutral vapor of the para ionization. sito that she mumbles; for example, the soft grids will be combined with alternating voltage sources of the same phase, the grid closest to the anode being subjected to the highest voltage, with respect to the oathodo, so as to direct the electrons towards the anode during the commando do the priming. ,
It goes without saying that the methods of construction of the internal thermal insulation, described above, are still applicable here.
The gratings can be made up: either by a network of metallic wires passed through holes drilled in the casing, or in hooks fixed to it, or by metallic plates with holes, or in any other way.
FIG. 3 describes a device for air cooling, in which the fluid motor member has a propeller whose palos have only a short length, the central part being constituted by a disk and the motor being placed above the propeller. It is possible to provide an arrangement having the same 1 '$ le, but making it possible to reduce the bulk; for this purpose the fan motor is placed below the propeller so that the overall dimensions are limited upwards to the plane of the propeller.
There is shown in Figure 12, one embodiment do. The motor 51 drives the helicopter, formed by a disc 52 at the periphery of which are fixed short blades 53; the air current, of annular cross-section, given by the helix, is channeled through the whole of an outer wall 54 and an inner wall
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
55, avoiding eddies. In this device, the upper cap 56 of the condensation chamber is obviously not ventilated, but this drawback is very appreciable, since the thicknesses of glass which are generally encountered in this region make the passage of heat very difficult. through the wall.
The upper part of the wall 55, located above the lower end plate of the motor, can moreover advantageously be constituted by the same carcass of the latter which is then ventilated by the air flow of the propeller.
All the devices described can be combined with a device for heating the bulb, automatic or otherwise, for the bulb in cold weather, and with a device for shutting off the ventilation, the whole in order to facilitate the ignition. mage.
The present device, as well. than those described, also applies to the cooling of glass bulb arà relays.
CLAIMS
Improvements intended to facilitate the cooling of the condensing chamber of mercury vapor rectifiers and to prevent inadvertent cooling from causing condensation of the mercury in the immediate vicinity of the anodes, which would have the effect of facilitating the formation of internal short circuits.
