<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Braking device testing device
The present invention relates to an apparatus for determining the weight, per wheel, of a vehicle, and for checking the efficiency of braking devices, remarkable in particular in that it comprises a screw meshing with rollers on which rests the wheel, this screw, connected to a device which allows it to be rotated, being mounted so as to be able to move longitudinally and one of its ends resting on a piston which moves by expelling a liquid in a cylinder connected to a pressure gauge.
The appended drawing, given solely by way of example, represents, in longitudinal section, a device according to the invention.
According to this example of execution, a base 1 carries, by means of bearings 2 and 3, a screw 4. This screw 4 engages with toothings 5 integral with rollers 6 idlers on the axes 7 carried by the support 1. L 'end 8 of the screw is grooved, which makes it integral, in rotation, with a sleeve 9' in which it

can slide. This sleeve 9 which pivots in the bearing 2 is secured, by a coupling 10, to an operating shaft 11 which makes it possible, by hand or with the aid of any motor, to rotate the sleeve 9 and screw 4.
The other cylindrical end 12 of the screw 4 rests directly in the bearing 3, in which it can slide. The end 12 µ rests, by means of a ball 13, on a pin 14, guided by the bearing 3 in which it slides. This pin 14 is integral with a piston 15. This piston 15 is housed in a cylinder 16 integral or attached to the base 1 and full of a liquid, oil, glycerin or other. The bottom of this cylinder communicates by a duct 17 with a manometer 18, the needle 19 of which moves in front of a dial 20.
The operation is as follows: The needle 19 of the manometer being at zero, if no load rests on the rollers 6, when the screw 4 is rotated in the direction of the arrow fl, the latter purely and simply drives them. rollers 6 thanks to the teeth 5.
If an unbraked vehicle wheel 21 is made to rest on any two rollers 6a, 6b, the rollers 6a, 6b which are preferably splined, drive this wheel. The resistance to the rotation of the rollers 6a and 6b is all the greater as the weight of the wheel 21 and the weight of the portion of the vehicle resting on this wheel are greater. As a result of the rolling resistance of the rollers 6a and 6b under the action of the sum of these two weights, the screw 4 is partially screwed with respect to the rollers 6a and 6b.
It advances in the direction of arrow f2. It pushes in front of it, by means of the ball 13 and of the axis 14, the piston 15, This one delivers the liquid
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
contained in the cylinder 16 until the resistance due to the liquid balances the resistance to the rotation of the rollers by the wheel 21. The needle 19 of the. pressure gauge indicates on dial 20 a value which, by means of an appropriate graduation, corresponds to the total weight resting on the rollers 6a and 6b.
If the wheel 21 is braked, the resistance to rotation of the rollers 6a and 6b is increased in proportion to the braking; the screw 4 continues to move in the direction of the arrow f2 in proportion to this braking, and the needle 19 gives a new indication ,,
It can therefore be seen that, if we have once and for all, established for a type of vehicle a relationship between the indications of the pressure gauge corresponding to an unbraked wheel and to the same wheel braked with a well-adjusted braking device and in conditions given conditions (for a given brake pedal stroke for example), it suffices for any vehicle of the same type to compare the ratio of the two indications of the pressure gauge under the same test conditions,
to immediately know not only the weight per wheel of the vehicle, but also whether the adjustment of the braking device is correct, or in which direction it is necessary to act on it.
Of course, the invention is in no way limited to the embodiment shown and described, which was chosen only as an example.
