<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Movement transformation device applicable in particular to cycle cranksets.
The present invention relates to a new device for transforming the reciprocating movement into rotational movement confina.;, And vice versa, more particularly applicable to cycle pedals and characterized in this case by the mounting of the pedal lever on an axis carried by a crown eccentric on the axis of the crankset, and also carrying a second axis of oscillation carried by a crank arm wedged on the axis of the crankset.
The appended drawings show schematically by way of non-limiting example an embodiment of the invention applied to cycle cranksets.
Figure I is the side view of the machine, Figure 2 is the side view of the toothed wheel.
FIG. 3 is a very schematic view, in section, showing the mounting of the pedals and their levers on their respective axes.
FIG. 4 is a sketch intended to make the principle of the invention understood.
Hitherto the transformation of the reciprocating movement into continuous rotational movement and in particular the transformation of the movement of the legs of the cyclist into a movement of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
rotation was done with two top and bottom dead points and when the right foot was in top dead center the left foot was in bottom dead center, the leg upstroke was perfectly useless from a power point of view.
We tried various devices in particular the one known in mechanics under the name of "witworth" which does not completely eliminate dead points, but none gave the results given by the proposed mechanical system, in fact, we see from the sketch in Figure 4 that when the crank arm is in its top dead center position, the foot on the pedal has long since passed the neutral position of the lever of this pedal and a vertical force breaks down into a tangential force which transferred to the point of attachment of the crank of the pedal crank still creates a significant force completely eliminating the stop at top dead center.
In addition, it will be noticed by looking at this sketch, that as the pedal is lowered, the angle alpha 'of the lever with the crank axis decreases, thus slowing the stroke of the pedal. with respect to, that of the crank arm and the toothed wheel on the same axis.
On the contrary, in the ascent movement, a movement which is useless from the point of view of the use of forces, it can be seen that this angle indicated in beta constantly increases as the ascent progresses, thus increasing the speed of the pedal in relation to that of the crank arm.
However, there is a well-known mechanical principle which says that what we lose in speed we regain in strength.
The proposed mechanism gives a kind of slow thrust mechanism with continuous rapid return, and completely eliminating the neutral point.
We see how it was carried out for the cycles in Figures I, 2 and 3.
Indeed, on the axis N 5 of the crankset are wedged two crank arms indicated at 6, the toothed wheel indicated at 12,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
this cogwheel is well known and is found on almost every cycle to transmit motion to the wheels via a chain.
On the other hand, eccentric and fixed are two rings 2 which serve, via a ball bearing whose balls are shown at 3, as a guide to a ring indicated at 40
This crown carries a pin 9 which serves as an attachment point for the pedal lever 8.
This pedal lever is itself articulated at 7 with the crank axis 6 and carries at its end, via the axis II, the pedal 10.
There are obviously other ways of achieving this principle: for example the crown 4, since it only carries a single point of articulation could be replaced by another crank arm or any other device of the same kind, such as 'a fixed groove in which a slide would slide.
In the case of application of this movement to mechanical devices other than cycles, it can be articulated at point II a connecting rod communicating the reciprocating movement of any machine or transmitting this reciprocating movement to a tool holder.
It goes without saying that the shapes, details, arrangements and materials employed may change while remaining within the scope of the invention.
