Régulateur de pression du combustihle
EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
!'lion régnant dans la prise d'air, on reliera le compartiment 18 à l'atmosphère par un orifice calibré 36 de manière à créer une fuite d'air par cet orifice. Le rapport entre les sections des orifices calibres 35 et 36 déterminera la frac- tion de la surpression transmise à la membrane 9, Cette surpression transmise pourra être réglée au moyen d'un pointeau 37 contrôlant l'orifice 36.
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

Fuel pressure regulator
EMI1.1
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯.¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ for internal combustion engine
In carburettors for internal combustion engines, it is necessary, in order to obtain a certain precision of the flow rate of the calibrations, to supply these calibrations under a well determined pressure. This well-determined pressure is most often produced using a float vessel.
The float tank has the drawback of not functioning when it is inverted; this drawback is serious for aviation carburettors, aerobatic flight requiring the engine to run in
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
, all positions, and even in the completely inverted position in the flight on the back.
The present invention relates to a device which is intended to replace the float valve and the operation of which is not influenced by the orientation of the apparatus.
The principle of the float tank is as follows; fuel has a free surface in the vessel subjected to a well-determined pressure, for example atmospheric pressure. A valve controls the entry of fuel into the tank; the movements of this valve are linked to the movements of the free surface of the dumbustible in the tank. This connection is made by a float which follows the variations of the level and which controls the valve.
The level stabilizes in an invariable position and thus establishes, at a fixed point, a well-determined pressure which is the pressure transmitted to the tank,
In the device which is the subject of the invention, the free surface of the opening is replaced by a contact surface between the fuel aonternz in the tank and a deformable membrane subjected on its outer face to a well determined pressure, the valve of fuel is connected to said membrane and therefore follows the movements of the membrane. The points of the fuel which are in contact with the membrane are subjected to the determined pressure which is exerted on the outer face of said membrane if the latter has no elastic reaction and if it is not charged.
In particular, if the membrane is subjected simply to atmospheric pressure, the contact surface between the liquid and the membrane is itself at atmospheric pressure, like the free surface in a float vessel,
If the pressure tends to increase in the tank, the membrane
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
strains and closes the fuel valve o If the pressure r drops, the diaphragm depresses and opens the fuel needle.
As in the case of a float tank, a fixed position surface is therefore produced in which the pressure is well determined,:.
The membrane of the device which is the subject of the invention is not necessarily horizontal and it can have any orientation, the pressure which prevails at the center of gravity of the membrane being independent of this orientation.
The invention also comprises a particular embodiment which makes it possible to achieve, at a point of the fuel pipe connecting the tank to the body of the carburetor, a determined load independent of the orientation of the device and independent of the inertia forces. to which the apparatus and the liquid masses it contains may be subjected during an accelerated movement. Either a nozzle or the outlet of the fuel channel can be placed at this point.
The description which will follow with reference to the appended drawing given by way of example will make it easier to understand the manner in which the invention can be implemented.
Fig. 1 schematically represents an embodiment of the invention.
Figs. 2 and 3 show variants of FIG. 1 in which the membrane is loaded by a spring.
Fig, 4 shows a device in which the influence of inertia forces is eliminated.,
Fig. 5 represents the application of the invention to the supply of a flooded nozzle under a constant load independent of the forces of inertia.
Fig. 6 shows an alternative embodiment of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the invention in which the membrane is subjected on its outer face to the pressure prevailing in the air intake of the carburetor.
Fig. 7 shows a variant of fig, 1 in which the membrane does not directly attack the fuel valve,
Fig. 8 represents an embodiment of the invention comprising several membranes.
In the device shown in fig. 1, the fuel is brought under a certain load through the pipe 1 communicating with the tank 2 through the orifice 3 controlled by the valve 4.
The tank 2 is provided with a fuel outlet channel 5 feeding the fuel outlet 6 via 1 + via the calibrated orifice 7; the fuel outlet 6 is placed in a diffuser 8. The tank 2 is closed in its upper part by a deformable membrane 9 which has no elastic reaction and which is connected, at its center, by a rod 10 to valve 4. Preferably, membrane 9 is not expandable. The outer face of the membrane 9 is subjected to atmospheric pressure, the inner face being bathed by the fuel.
In the XX plane, comprising the inner face of the membrane 9, the liquid is subjected to the atmospheric pressure which is exerted through the membrane 9. This level XX therefore plays exactly the role of the free surface of a float tank .
If the fuel level tends to rise in the tank 2, the membrane 9 ae lifts and closes the needle 4. If the level tends to fall, the membrane is depressed and opens the needle 4.
The membrane 9 is not necessarily horizontal, and the operation of the device is the same, whatever the orientation; the pressure of the liquid against the gravity of the membrane always remains equal the atmospheric pressure membrane always remains equal to atmospheric pressure
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
whatever the orientation,
In the device of FIG. 1, a pressure equal to atmospheric pressure is created at a determined point, namely the center of gravity of the membrane. A different pressure can be established at this point, as shown in figures 2 and 3.
In figo 2, the membrane 9 is loaded by a spring 11. The pressure of the spring 11 is distributed over the surface of the liquid which bathes the membrane and thus puts the tank 2 under load. The mechanism for closing and opening the valve 4 is not modified, the equilibrium pressure being greater than atmospheric pressure instead of being equal to it, It goes without saying that the supply pressure in the duct 1 should be sufficient to push back the loaded membrane 9 when the valve is fully open.
The tank 2 could be, for example, placed below the diffuser 80, the spring 11 being calibrated so as to balance the load exerted by the liquid column contained in the outlet duct 5, the load being zero at the end. mite 6 of channel 5.
The aotion of the spring 11 can be replaced by the elasticity of the membrane.
In fig. 3, the spring 11 acts on the diaphragm 9 in the direction of closing of the valve 4 instead of acting in the direction of opening as in FIG. 2. Under these conditions. the equilibrium pressure in the tank 2 is lower than the atmospheric pressure and the spring 11 can be calibrated so that the load is zero at the outlet 6 of the channel 5.
The two devices shown in Figures 2 and 3 are therefore equivalent to a float tank whose level
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
would pass through the end 6. These devices have on a float tank the advantage of being able to be placed at any height relative to the outlet 6, the spring 11 being calibrated accordingly.
It is understood that the spring 11 will not necessarily be calibrated so as to obtain a zero load at 6,
In FIGS, 1 to 3, the pressure is invariable at the center of gravity of the membrane 9 whatever the inclination of the device, but the load on the nozzle 7 or even on the outlet 6 varies according to this inclination.
If we completely reverse the devices of fig.
2 and 3, it can be seen that the load at 6 will have increased by twice the height h which separates the outlet 6 from the center of gravity 12 of the membrane 9 in the case of FIG. 2; it will have decreased by twice this height in the case of 4. 3.
This variation in load does not generally present any great drawback, but it can be avoided by replacing the action of the spring 11 by Inaction of a weight ', as shown in fig. 4.
On the rod 4, the membrane 9 is loaded by a spring 13 which, by distributing its pressure over the whole of said membrane, balances the pressure of a liquid column of height - h. The membrane being assumed to be horizontal, the height is the vertical distance to the membrane 9 from the end 6 which is to be subtracted from the load variations.
When the device is tilted, the component P 'of the weight 13 perpendicular to the membrane 9 and the height h' of the outlet 6 above the center of gravity 12 of the membrane vary in the same ratio and consequently the load at 6 does not vary, on condition, however, that care is taken to place output 6 on the normal to the
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
membrane 9 passing through the center of gravity 12 of the surface of the membrane ,,,
The device of FIG. 4 peimet therefore to achieve at a determined point which in the figure is the outlet of the fuel channel, a zero load, whatever the orientation of the device.
If in addition to the weight 13, a spring loads the membrane 9, it will be possible to obtain, at a determined point, a constant and non-zero load, independent of inclinations, such a device is shown in freeze. 5. In this figure, the membrane 9 is loaded with the liver by the weight 13 and by the spring 11. The fuel coming from the tank 2 feeds, through a flooded nozzle 14, a well 15 open to the atmosphere. 16, 1 air from port 16 emulsifies fuel from 14 and emulsified fuel is delivered through channel 17 to emulsion outlet 6 located in diffuser 8.
If we want the nozzle 14 to be fed under a constant load, equal to the height a of the horizontal plane XX passing through 6 above the nozzle 14, when the membrane is horizontal, the weight 13 is determined in the same way that the pressure which it exerts on the liquid balances a column of height .1 equal to the vertical distance of the nozzle 14 from the horizontal plane of the membrane 9, and the spring 11 is tared so that it exerts a pressure on the liquid equilibrating a liquid column of height a.
Under these conditions, the device will operate exactly as if the nozzle 14 were supplied by an X-X level float vessel. If the nozzle 14 is located on the normal to the membrane 9 passing through the gravity center of oelle-oi, the nozzle 14 will be supplied under a load
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
constant represented by a liquid height a, whatever the orientation of the device and whatever the inertial forces acting on this device, in particular, the influence of the centrifugal force in any direction is completely eliminated.
In most cases, it is sufficient to eliminate the influence on the load of inclinations or inertial forces parallel to a determined vertical plane, without it being necessary to eliminate the influence of any inclination. In particular, in the case of powering an aircraft engine, it suffices to eliminate the influence of inclinations parallel to the longitudinal of the aircraft. The strong inclinations in this plane correspond to the rise in candle or to the nose down flight. At the same time, the influence of the vertical acceleration due to the air swell is eliminated. The inclinations or transverse accelerations of the device are generally negligible or very momentary.
If one wishes to eliminate only the influence of inclinations and inertial forces parallel to a determined vertical plane, the nozzle 14 can be moved (more generally, the point where one wishes to achieve a load independent of said inclinations) on a horizontal perpendicular to said vertical plane. During inclinations parallel to said plane, the membrane will rotate around a horizontal contained in its plane and perpendicular to said vertical plane. This gives a wider mounting latitude which is often invaluable.
As in a float tank, the pressure exerted in the tank can be made to vary over the free surface of the. fuel and thus modify the load, it will be possible .. in the device which is the object of the invention, to
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
vary the pressure exerted on the membrane 9, the result r being identical to that obtained with a float tank ,.
By way of example, FIG. 5 a device for transmitting to the membrane a fraction of the negative pressure which exists in the body of the carburetor.
The tank 2 is surmounted by a chamber 18 communicating with the atmosphere through a calibrated orifice 19 and communicating with the narrowed section of the diffuser 8 by a duct 20 provided with a calibration 21. The load of the nozzle 14 then varies as the depression in room 18.
It is also possible, in the case of an aircraft engine where the speed of the airplane is used to create an overpressure in the air intake, subject the membrane to the action of this overpressure by connecting the chamber. 18 with the air intake. This variant has been shown in fig.6; in this figure, a duct 33 connects to the air intake 34 the oompartment 18 adjacent to the outer face of the membrane 9 closing the treatment 2, The same arrangement is applicable in the case where the air is supplied to the carburetor by a compressor supercharging the engine.
The overpressure created by the air current being of dynamic origin, the action which it exerts on the membrane 9 depends on the orientation in which the duct 33 opens into the air intake 34 and also depends on the section of the duct 33. It is intended to determine the relative dimensions of the membrane 9 and of the duct 33 as well as the force of the spring 11 so as to obtain on the membrane 9 the dynamic effect that 1 we will desire; in particular ,, a calibrated orifice 35 can be provided on the duct 33. If the duct 33 is straight and is directed in the direction of the air stream, a very high overpressure can be transmitted to the membrane 9.
If we want to use only part of, the overpressure

The lion reigning in the air intake, the compartment 18 will be connected to the atmosphere via a calibrated orifice 36 so as to create an air leak through this orifice. The ratio between the sections of the calibrated orifices 35 and 36 will determine the fraction of the overpressure transmitted to the diaphragm 9. This transmitted overpressure can be adjusted by means of a needle 37 controlling the orifice 36.
In fig, 6, there is shown a membrane loaded by a spring 11, but the membrane could also be loaded by the action of a weight * or by the combined inaction of a weight and a spring or not be loaded at all, as in the case of fig, 1
It is obvious that FIGS, 1 to 5 are purely schematic and that the diagrams which they represent can be modified in many ways in detail without departing from the invention.
In particular, the mechanical connection between the membrane 9 and the needle 4 can be modified, this connection being able to be carried out for example by means of a system of levers; it could also be unilateral, the membrane only controlling the closing of the valves,
This mechanical connection can be as varied as the connections between float and valve in known float tanks; it will suffice for this connection to be such that the displacement of the membrane which corresponds to an increase in the volume of the tank ,, causes the closure of the valve,
Details such as valve guide, membrane guide, etc., have not been shown either.
In FIG. 6, there is shown, by way of example, a variant of the device of FIG. 1 in which the
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
membrane 9 does not directly attack the valve 3. In this figure, the membrane9 attacks via the rod 10 and the lever 23p articulated around 1 $ axis 24, the end of the stem 22 of the valve 3 which passes through the guide 25. The extension 31 of the rod 10 is guided at 32. When the diaphragm is raised, it causes the valve to close; the opening of the valve is caused by the pressure of the fuel delivered by the pipe 1.
If the membrane 9 is loaded by a weight, this weight can also act indirectly on said membrane; it will be placed ,, for example, at 26 at one of the ends of the lever 23. The reduction that the lever 23 allows leads to a lower weight than that which, applied directly to the membrane 9, would be necessary to obtain the same effort
Finally, as in the case of float tanks, the single diaphragm 9 can be replaced by several partial diaphragms linked together mechanically and controlling the valve 3 by their combined action.
The various arrangements described above could be applied to each of the partial membranes.
Or can,) in this case, eliminate at a point where, for example, a nozzle will be placed the influence of inclinations and inertial forces, parallel to a determined vertical plane, or again the influence of inclinations and forces of inertia acting in any direction.
By way of example, there is shown in FIG. 7, a device where the fuel valve is controlled by the combined inaction of two paxallel membranes 27 and 28, the centers of gravity of which are connected by a rod 29.

It is easy to see that in this device, the point independent of the accelerations is located at a point 30 of the axis 29 such that the products of its distance from each of the members by the surface thereof are clamped. .
More generally, in a system of parallel mehbra- nes bathed on one of their faces by the fuel and on the other by a gaseous fluid whose inertia is negligible, the displacements of said membranes being integral the point which plays the role of the center of gravity of the single membrane in fig, 5 is also the center of gravity of all the surfaces of the various membranes, taking care to positively count the surfaces of the membranes bathed in the fuel on their face facing one direction, and negatively those whose face facing the opposite direction is bathed by the fuel,
If more complicated mechanical connections (levers etc.) are made,
one will determine in each particular case the point indifferent to the accelerations of all directions, or the place of the points indifferent to the accelerations parallel to a given vertical plane, One will place in this point or in one of these points a nozzle, or in a more general way , an orifice supplied with pure fuel and at the outlet of which the fuel is mixed with air.
