<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"SOUNDING TREPAN 4 WHEELS" formed by
The present invention covers improvements to the type of roller drill bit for deep soundings covered by US Pat. No. Hughes No. 979,496 of December 27, 1910.
An object of the invention is to provide a rigid device resistant to the tendency of the constituent parts of the bit to separate from each other under the effect of the high pressure caused by the work and to- strokes resulting from the lubrication device. The invention also aims to snap the elements of the head into each other so as to withstand everything: tenaance
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
from one element to slide over another.
Other advantages and particular features of the invention will emerge from the description which will be given with reference to the appended drawing showing schematically and by way of example one embodiment of the invention.
On this drawing
Fig. 1 is a vertical section through the center of a knurled bit according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
In the drawing, A and A denote the elements of the punch head of the Hughes patent, each carrying a frustoconical wheel B mounted on an axis 1 forming an integral part of the element, 2 denotes the removable part of this axis or what the we can call it a sleeve. This sleeve as well as the device 5 holding the wheel 3 in place on its axis, can be similar to the elements of the Hughes patent.
Each element A of the head is provided with a fitting A1 which is threaded. When the two elements ± of the head are assembled, their fittings form a threaded fitting of circular cross-section which is screwed into a solid blocking element E. This blocking element is in one piece. It is circularly bored at a and forms a threaded circular bush b receiving the threaded fitting of the assembled head elements A. The relatively massive locking element E is provided, in its middle, with a threaded shank c. This tail forms an integral part of the main body of the locking element. It screws into the transmission element giving the head its rotational movement.
This element may be the usual heavy hole punch collar but
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
we got into the habit of screwing this element into a reamer.
R is a part of this reamer.
The shank composed of the elements A of the head according to the invention, together with the circular bore and the engagement of the parts between them, the control shoulders a2 and a3 and the solid blocking element E in one single piece interposed between these parts and the control element, securely hold parts A and 4 in place and, due to its sturdy construction, the blocking element prevents these parts A and move apart or separate under the excessive pressure resulting from operation of the bit at the bottom of the hole.
It will be noted that the parts A form at a1 a shoulder or notch which fits into the bore of the locking element E and finds a support on the flat transverse surfaces a2 and a3 placed respectively at the end of the locking element. locking and at the bottom of the bore.
This arrangement provides the elements with a cylindrical part a4 between the main body of the head A and A and the shank A 'which is a short projecting part bearing against the cylindrical side wall a5 of the bore.
The two parts A and A of the head snap into each other at their contact faces. An embodiment of this arrangement is to provide on one part two projections or ribs 4 penetrating into corresponding cavities made in the other part, so that any tendency that a part may have to move laterally with respect to the other, that is to say on a plane parallel to their faces in contact, is prevented. This avoids the wear of these surfaces in contact and the play of the parts between them. Consequently, these two parts behave as a single whole when
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
that they rotate around the vertical axis of the device.
In previous forms of construction of this type of apparatus, a central lubricating device has been used placed inside the hollow shank of the bit and connected directly to the cutting parts of the head, a device requiring that the or the coolant conduits are disposed on one side of the upper ends of the portions so as to communicate with the annular space surrounding the central lubrication device.
This makes it necessary to extend the water stream (s) by inclining them relative to the vertical axis of the device so that the water stream is exited at any point near the cutting face of the tool. , and. made that it is impossible to have this outlet on the axis of the device for watering the truncated conical wheels.
This inclination of the water current causes erosion of the walls of the conduit or water passage as a result of the abrasive action of materials, such as sand, carried away by the water or the lubricating liquid. According to the invention, the water duct 5 follows the vertical axis of the locking element and of the parts A and A of the head and opens out in the middle of these parts and of the faces of the knurling wheels. -to-be. Any form of lubrication device disposed in the shank of the bit above the cutting element can be used; the lubricant duct is indicated at 6 and 6a, and passes partly through the locking element and partly through the head elements, facing the ducts passing through the cutting element.
The arrangement according to the invention has the important advantage of avoiding the pull-off effect of parts A and on the relatively thin tubular member, or part C of Hughes Patent No. 979,496, which is an integral part thereof. grante or not, using the solid blocking element in
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
a single part which, according to the invention, is interposed between parts A and A and the tubular element, the collar, the body of the bit or other part to which this locking element can be fixed.
Other important advantages are: 1 - to throw the control back on the shoulders a2 and a3 instead of making it bear on the threaded friction shank; 2 - to avoid jolts caused by a lubricating device connected directly and usually comprising a pipe of about 6 m 75 in length and sometimes 13 m 75; and3 - to have the passage of the lubricating fluid placed in the center.
The invention is not limited to a threaded connection because other shapes of shanks can be used.
It will be noted that the replaceable elements of this bit include, in addition to the rollers, the sleeves 2.
These sleeves take up the set of knurls. As in the mentioned patent, they can be easily replaced when worn. The parts A and A of the cutting head form elements which do not need to be replaced because they last indefinitely.
They are easily assembled in the blocking element and they are securely joined together, which prevents them from having a tendency, during work, to move with respect to each other. blocking annihilates this trend and prevents it from being transmitted to any element of the device liable to be twisted on this account. As a result of mounting the multi-part cutting head in a solid one-piece blocking element, the parts are held in their respective determined positions so that the knurls maintain the borehole diameter regardless of the size. depth.
