<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

LANCE - MECHANICAL BOMBS The present invention relates to a mechanical bomb launcher, which is characterized by a half-crossbow, this one, of the leaf spring type which is used in full or in the form of a half-spring. for vehicles, having here the office of giving the propulsive force to the projectile respectively to the bomb to be launched.
The manner in which the half-crossbow works with respect to the projectile is likewise considered as a characteristic point; the latter is placed on an inclined plane and the half-crossbow, pinched between two jaws, is put under tension by a suitable loading device, so that its free end remains in contact with the projectile. When the crossbow is ready to restore the stored force, in the form of elastic force, the launch is carried out by releasing the stop which held the free end of the half-crossbow, which achieves instantaneous relaxation of the crossbow. crossbow spring; the projectile is thus pushed to an appropriate distance along the firing plane.
Considering certain well-known children's games, the apparatus works much like throwing a small ball of paper, for example, by placing a finger under tension.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
against the end of another bent finger, for example the thumb, the small ball being placed on the end thereof. The device according to the invention is suitable mainly for launching so-called hand bombs weighing 500 to 1500 grams, at distances varying from 70 to 200 meters, by a very simple, fairly light machine, allowing high speed. 20 rounds per minute firing range, also allowing precise and silent shooting, and capable of being loaded by one person.
In the accompanying drawing is shown, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention, in axial longitudinal elevation.
3 shows a bundle of leaf springs of decreasing length arranged on a beam 1 by means of jaws 2, placed at the upper end of this beam 1. The beam can be formed by two uprights or parallel flanges, which embrace the bundle of springs, and are assembled by the jaws 2 at the same time as the said spring blades. In the figure, we see only one of these two uprights, the other being supposed to be removed to leave uncovered the bundle of blades 3. The above system can swing around a pivot 5 provided in the beam 4 resting on the ground. A support 9 held by a hinge to one of the jaws 2 can slide by its base on one or the other notch, or the like, made in the beam 4.
It is by means of the support 9 that one can establish the various inclined positions Ó of the axis 0 of the beam of blades, with respect to the horizon, or to graduate the firing angle. The projectile is placed on a plane 7 integral with the systems of the beam 1. The longest spring of the beam is on the anterior side, vis-à-vis the projectile. rear and * gradually decreasing are all the other 'blades of the half crossbow.
A solid stave or nose 6 of Pinot 5 can be brought in by means of a multi-system.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
force plier, controlled by a lever (not shown) in (shown in dotted lines). in the 6 'position / Due to the fact that this nose 6.from its) rest position, is able to pull backwards, when it is tilted, the end of the first spring, that is, that is to say the longest, from the bundle of blades to fully cocking the device in the extreme position 6 ', one can understand without more the arrangement which allows the launching.
It is necessary to provide a stop or snap which maintains the spring in the position corresponding to 6 ', and which can be released by any command.
When the pivot is free to return to the previous resting position, or when the first blade is released in any way from this stop, it will happen that the projectile, in immediate contact with the blade, will be pushed by. this following the difection f and indirectly by the other blades of the beam, and launched at a distance which depends on several factors:
weight of the projectile, shape of the projectile, power of the spring, degree of compression of the latter, angle of firing, distance S of application of the spring against the projectile before the latter is detached from said spring, By combining these given, one is able to adjust the shot to a desired distance.
Naturally, by this device, it is also possible to throw other objects, for example signaling snowshoes, ends of ropes (for marine use) etc ... etc ...
The device may be designed so that it can be dismantled in two or more detachable parts, to facilitate transport and shipping. The bottles can be made of wood or some other light material, and the rest will preferably be made of steel and iron.
