<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

the motor shaft rotates at a speed too low to provide the desired current by rotating the magneto. engage or disengage the surfaces 30 & 31, but the length of the teeth 23 is sufficient so that they are always in engagement with the gear 20, A suitable device, for example a flat spring 33 mounted on the housing, normally pushes the shaft 24 to a position where the clutch surfaces 30 & 31 are free, and appropriate means have been provided to allow the shaft to be moved in the reverse direction so that the surfaces engage,
and that the auxiliary magneto is driven by the flywheel 4, when the commando rod 10 has been pulled so as to put the starter device in mesh with the engine. For this purpose, a small lever 34 is suitably pivoted at 35 on the housing. One of its ends is articulated at-36 to the oscillating lever 12. The other extremity
37 of lever 34 is capable of acting on the end of shaft 24 and of moving this shaft so as to ob. hold the clutch on surfaces 30 & 31 when pulling on the rod 10.
Once the flywheel has been brought to a sufficient speed by the crank 8, a pull exerted on the control rod 10 has the effect of turning the oscillaht lever 12, which, via the rod 14, lever 15 and the oscillating shaft 16, causes the drive member of the motor 2 to move, so that -this member comes into contact with the motor shaft the traction marl causes the lever 34 to oscillate around of its pivot 36, so that the end 37 of this lever acts on the end of the shaft 24 and moves this shaft. so as to cause the surfaces 30 to 31 to engage, so that the auxiliary magneto is driven by the flywheel. In the embodiment shown in Figs.
4 & 5 the connecting rod 38, which is fixed by one end to the lever 4 39, oscillating., Is fixed by the other end, to one end of a lever 40 pivoted at 41 on the housing 1. The other end of the lever 40 extends in a notch 49 formed at the periphery of a ring 43 mounted so as to be able to turn on a cylindrical part of the starter housing.

can have a suitable handle ', tqqt% oas the control rod 1a of fig.1, When a traction is exerted on the rod 44, the ring 43 is rotated,' and the lever is oscillated 40 around its pivot 41; the connecting rod 38 lowers the lever 39 and oscillates the shaft 16 which puts the motor drive member 2 into engagement with the motor shaft. In this embodiment, moreover, a crank shaft 45 has been retracted, which forms a right angle with the starter axis, and which may have a universal joint 46.
The shaft 24 can be moved in the opposite direction to the action of the spring 33 by means of a cam 47 carried by a shaft 48 mounted so as to rotate in the housing. The shaft 48 is preferably actuated by an arm. 49 connected to the rotating ring 43 by means of a spring 50.
The operation of this execution mode is
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
substantially the same as the operation of the mode of execution of figs 1 to 3 inclusive, When the rod 44 is pulled so as to engage the drive member with the motor shaft, the spring 50 rotates the arm 49 thus bare 'the shaft 48, and the cam 47 pushes the shaft 24 so as to obtain the engagement of the surfaces
30 & 31, so that the magneto is driven.
When the motor starts up and component 2 pushes out of engagement with the motor shaft, lever 40 rotates to return ring 43 to the position shown in the drawing; spring 33 moves shaft 24 so as to disengage clutch surfaces 30 & 31, and movement of this axis rotates cam 47, shaft 18, and fscon arm 49 to return them to. the; % primitive position.
Although only mild modes of carrying out the present invention have been illustrated and described, it is clear that this invention can be expressed mechanically in a number of ways, which can be accomplished, numerous changes to form, detail, and arrangement of parts, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
