<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Method and apparatus for the production of rolled balls
It is known to manufacture balls (agglomerates) by rolling in a special apparatus by humidifying the pulverulent material with solutions.
In the operation of installations of this type, difficulties arise which reduce the production capacity of the installation and cause frequent stoppages. The object of the present invention is to obviate these drawbacks.
Contrary to known methods, the supply and humidification of the pulverulent material takes place by the fact that a layer of pulverulent material, of adjustable height, is continuously formed on a turntable and is humidified by a device. in such a way that it is not the whole surface, but only separate places in space that are moistened. In this way a mass is formed, which consists of small clusters, held

agglomerated by moisture, and non-agglutinated powdery material.
This mass is, by means of a conveyor screw, which comprises at its discharge end a grid by which excessively large parts are divided, dragged into a drum, is transformed into rolled balls, of spherical shape, by the rotating movement of the drum and is fed to a drying device.
As the agglomeration of the particles takes place by crystallization or hardening of the binder, the balls are not moving during drying, but are dried in the resting state, to prevent the agglomeration operation from being. hampered by the movement of the balls.
The apparatus used for this process is suitable for these improvements.

The hopper 1 is suspended along the axis above a plate 3, receiving a rotational movement by the control mechanism 2 and comprises at its lower end a ring 4, of adjustable position in the vertical direction, for allow to adjust the amount of powder material coming out of the hopper 1 during the rotation of the plate 3.
To spread this pulverulent material in a uniform layer, bars 5, arranged so as to be able to be moved vertically, are fixed above the plate 3 and, in order to moisten the pulverulent material, a device 6 is provided for letting the drop liquid fall. by drop.
The humidified material is projected from the plate 3 by a bar 7, through which the mixture is rejected into the conveyor screw 8, arranged below the plate 30
This conveyor screw 8 is provided with a control mechanism 9 with chain sprocket. The free end of the casing of this screw is extended by a grid 10, through the slots of which arms 11, fixed on the axis of the screw, divide the material and push it back through the slots. . As the grid protrudes inside the frustoconical drum 12, material falls into the drum, which is mounted on rollers 13 and receives a rotational movement by the chain drive mechanism 14.
During the rotating movement of the drum, it / is formed from small moist clumps of matter balls, to which the particles of matter adhere. But the formation of the balls does not take place when the wall of the drum 12 is firm, because the material then slides on their surface. This is why, to prevent the material from slipping, protrusions, formed by bars 15, are provided on the drum 12.
During its operation, the drum thus constructed produces rolled spherical agglomerates. Their training
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The regularity ceases as soon as wet material adheres to the wall of the drum and these adhesions, becoming ever greater, detach from the wall and fall into the drum. To prevent the formation of these adhesions, there is provided on the drum a bar 16, forming a rack, which is fixed to an axis 17, mounted so as to be able to turn and which is controlled by an arm 18 provided with a roller. The scraper bar 16 is arranged such that it does not come into contact with the wall of the drum.
During the rotation of the drum, the bars 15 engage under the roller and raise the bar-reel 16, so that the bars 15 are not encountered by this bar-scraper 16. As soon as the bars 15 have passed the scraper 16, the latter is returned by the action of the spring 19 against the wall of the drum. This device prevents the formation of adhesions on the wall of the drum. It is only by virtue of this arrangement that a regular and continuous operation can be obtained with high production.
In the drum 12 is further disposed a ring 20 which is provided with a flap 21. It is intended to retain the material in the drum, so that it forms more solid balls and that more powdery material adheres. to these balls.
The material, brought into the shape of spherical balls by rolling, is then conveyed over a sieving device, to separate the fine material from the balls and to bring it back into the conveyor screw 8.
The screening device consists of a part in the form of a gutter, 23, attached to the periphery of the drum 12, which is closed, on the side of the drum, by a perforated wall 24 serving as a sieve. A partition 25, formed in the gutter 23, serves to lift the fine material accumulating in this annular gutter. The evacuation of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
material, in the highest position in the drum, is effected by a shutter 26, which is arranged in this location instead of the wall of the screen. This shutter is fixed to a lever 27, which is held, for example by the tension of a spring, in the position corresponding to the closure for the shutter.
But if this lever meets, in its highest position, the stop 28, this flap opens and the fine material falls into the collecting hopper of a conveyor screw 29, which is driven by the control mechanism 30 and which returns the material to the conveyor screw (fig.l).
The rolled balls, separated from the fine material, comprise spherical agglomerates of different dimensions. They are discharged from the drum through the sieve 31. The oversized balls remain in the drum and are lifted by sheet metal blades 32 at the periphery of the edge of the drum 12. They fall from their highest position also into the screw. conveyor 29, are crushed there and return to the drum through the conveyor screw 8.
The balls falling through the sieve 31 arrive in a gutter 33 with a pivoting movement evdcuatton chute, able to rotate about a vertical axis; this chute can receive a reciprocating movement by means of a guide ring 34, running in zig-zag on the outer periphery of the drum, and of the oscillating lever 35, sliding on this ring.
The gutter projects into a heated well 36, in which there is a bucket conveyor, the buckets of which consist of flat boxes 37.
As a result of the back and forth movement of the gutter 33, the balls roll in these boxes and travel downwards in the opposite direction to the heating. In this way, the moisture evaporates, the balls harden and fall
