<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

of the combustion chamber. The return flow of air from the additional chamber into the combustion chamber can be further promoted because, during the rise of the piston from the moment of fuel injection, a small part of the fuel comes into contact. air in the additional chamber and ignites there, thereby producing an increase in pressure in the additional chamber. The strong return flow of air from the additional chamber then produces a subsequent intimate mixing of the injected fuel, not completely burned, with the air which is in the combustion chamber and which flows from the additional chamber, which mixture results in the observed good combustion.
The description which will follow with regard to the appended drawing, given by way of example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented.
Figures 1 and 2 show a side injection method. a designates the injection nozzle with several jets arranged on the wall of the cylinder, and whose openings and the directions of the jets are adapted to the shape of the combustion chamber. In front of this, and in the continuation of the median fuel jet, is arranged an auxiliary chamber b, designated by the name of "additional chamber, which is connected to the combustion chamber c proper by means of an opening d.As the piston rises, part of the air in the cylinder is forced into this additional chamber, which can already be loaded with small fractions of fuel from the moment the injection begins.
The fuel which thus reached the chamber
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
further, can ignite there and the resulting pressure increase causes, in connection with the pressure drop occurring after the change of piston stroke in the combustion chamber proper, a strong back flow of l unburned air from the additional chamber, in the actual combustion chamber, where the combustion of the subsequently injected fuel thus takes place with a constant supply of oxygen.
The supercharged air flowing simultaneously back from the additional chamber into the combustion chamber causes strong swirling of the contents of said combustion chamber, and thus realizes the well-known precondition of a good and complete combustion. of the injected fuel.
@
By this arrangement of the additional chamber it is possible, in machines having a small bore, to make immediately enter into the additional chamber part of the median jet of fuel.
However, this arrangement is in no way a necessary condition for the aim which is proposed.
Tests have shown, on the contrary, that the same good result is obtained with an additional chamber mounted laterally or between two neighboring combustion jets as seen in FIG. 3.
Figs. 4 and 5 are an embodiment of the invention with central injection. In this case, the additional chamber b can also be located either in the direction of a fuel jet, or on the side, that is to say between two fuel jets. Likewise, one can still mount a second additional chamber bl facing the first, thanks to which the effect
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
swirl of the contents of the chamber flowing back onto the contents of the combustion chamber is further increased.
Fig. 6. finally shows another embodiment for a side injection engine, in which two diametrically opposed injection nozzles a et al and two additional chambers b and are provided. bl.
The axes of the additional chambers are still in line with the median fuel jets. It can be seen clearly from the foregoing that they do not have to be in this place, but that they can just as easily be located laterally of the fuel jets.
The additional chamber causes an enlargement of the compression chamber of the cylinder. In the event that this is not compensated for by a corresponding reduction in the compression distance of the piston, the volume of the additional chamber is advantageously made variable, depending on the load or the number of revolutions of the machine. Its devices allow to bring or-. ' to maintain the engine more easily at the necessary ignition temperature both when starting and when running at reduced load or at reduced number of revolutions.
The following figures show, by way of example, how this variation in the volume of the additional chamber can be achieved.
In Fig. 7, a designates the injection nozzle and b the additional chamber, which is in constant and open relation with the combustion chamber c by an opening d. The additional chamber is for example cylindrical and contains a piston e whose rod el carries a-a-d-e-nture e2 and moves in the thread
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
interior of a toothed wheel f which meshes with a toothed sector g. The toothed sector is connected by means of a rod h to the intake regulator of the engine.
A coupling device j has been interposed on the regulator rod which makes it possible to remove the connection with the regulator and to reestablish it making operation, so that, for example, when starting the machine, the piston is placed by hand in its extreme left position, and that it can then be placed, during operation, under the influence of the regulator by means of the coupling device.
To start the engine when cold, the coupling device j is first separated from the piston rod and the governor is thus disengaged. The plunger is then placed by hand in the phantom position of Fig. 7 in which the additional chamber occupies the smallest volume. After starting the piston is placed by the coupling device, under the influence of the regulator which moves it in correlation with the load or the number of revolutions of the machine, so as to determine a greater or lesser volume of the additional bedroom.
In the embodiment shown in fig. 8, a throttle member k mounted, for example, as a cone valve is in place of the piston and is placed in the same way as the latter under the influence of the regulator . When starting the engine from cold, this throttle member is placed by hand so that it completely closes the connection opening d between the additional chamber and the combustion chamber.
During operation, the throttle member is connected by means of the coupling device j to the regulator which now varies depending on the load
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
or the number of turns, is positioned with respect to the passage orifice d such that, during an increasing load, the passage section increases, during a decreasing load, the passage section decreases, and that thus the quantity of air expelled into the additional chamber varies correspondingly by throttling. In this case, it is the quantity of expelled air which varies instead of the volume of the chamber, which amounts to the same as regards the final effect obtained.
A throttling disc can also be used instead of the throttle valve, as seen in fig. 9 to 11. In this case, a disc 1 provided with openings m is fitted in the additional chamber. In front of this disc, is mounted a second, disc n, rotatable, fixed on the shaft o passing through the additional chamber and having openings p corresponding to the openings of the fixed disc. The shaft is in turn connected by means of a rod provided with a coupling device j to the engine governor.
When starting the engine, the regulator is disengaged and the movable disc n rotates by hand so that it covers the openings m of the fixed disc 1. 'The contents of the additional chamber are therefore separated from the combustion chamber of the motor. 'During operation, the regulator is connected by means of the coupling member to the shaft o of the rotating disc n, so that depending on the position of the regulator depending on the load or the number of engine revolutions , the movable disc n can be moved nar relative to the fixed disc 1 so as to place the openings p in front of the openings m and in this way to free a larger or smaller part of these openings.
According to the relative position of the disc
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
movable relative to the fixed disc, there is a more or less strong throttling of the passage opening to the additional chamber.
Summary:
1.Injection internal combustion engine with jet spraying, and one or more additional chambers connected to the combustion chamber, characterized in that the additional chamber or chambers are mounted laterally to the combustion chamber and that the nozzle d The injection is so arranged in relation to the opening or to the connecting channel of these chambers that direct injection into this chamber does not take place or takes place quite insignificantly.
