<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"ADVANCES RELATING TO CARRIERS"
The present invention relates generally to conveyors, and more particularly to a drive means for conveyors having a substantially continuous moving transport member.
It relates even more particularly to conveyors having conveyor elements having interstices inside which acts, by penetration, the drive device established to drive the conveyor.
Until now, carriers are known for
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
transport of solid substances such as, for example, coal, stones, waste or the like, which conveyors are provided with transport elements provided with gaps, and which may comprise a wire mesh or metallic tape .
These conveyors are generally of the type comprising an endless transport element, in which case they are generally put into action by a rotary drive device, engaging the transport element at one or each of its ends or edges, usually in a part or portion specially adapted to be engaged by the driving device.
Carriers of the type cited above have, in use, shown numerous drawbacks. Among these is the fact that the transport element being inherently more or less elastic due to its mesh construction, it has a tendency to be pulled by the drive means which it engages on its edges, outside its normal alignment.
In addition, the transport element undergoes a great force due to the fact that between its edges it supports the entire weight of the transported materials and to the fact that the drive means attack it from its edges.
There is also a considerable loss of power due to the fact that the drive medium is not.? ' completely effective, the driving only taking place on the edges of the conveyor element.
The invention provides a conveyor provided with a transport element and a drive means for the transport element, provided with members penetrating into the part thereof serving as a support for the material.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
It will be appreciated that, particularly when using a mesh or perforated transport element, it is desirable to engage the transport element at transversely spaced points thereof, in order to distribute the load more evenly. driving force across the width of the transport element.
This is accomplished very easily with a transport element provided with interstices, since the drive device finds a natural support in the interstices of the transport element. In this respect, there is no need to provide for a special arrangement.
The invention provides a conveyor having a conveying element provided with a material supporting part and a toothed drive device for the conveying element, the teeth of this device penetrating into the part of the conveying element. supporting matter.
Heretofore, the transport elements have been operated by toothed wheel mechanisms only engaging the edge of the transport element or a chain attached to one or both edges of the transport element.
The arrangement of a series of toothed wheels fixed at spaced points on a drive shaft placed transversely to the conveyor element enables a conveyor to be established whose operation has distinct advantages over those known heretofore.
Further, the invention provides a conveyor having a conveyor element and drive means for the conveyor element, which means are disposed transversely thereto and placed at predetermined intervals, and an arrangement allowing transverse relative movement of the conveyors. means of training.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
A conveyor element constructed of a mesh is inherently more or less elastic, as mentioned above, and if fixed sprockets were provided, these would have a tendency to exert lateral tension on the conveyor element and. would also tend to disengage from the stitches, and therefore to entrain the element in a non-uniform fashion.
By arranging relatively movable toothed wheels transversely to the transport element, these disadvantages are eliminated.
The accompanying drawings show a preferred embodiment of the object of the invention, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view from above of a conveyor, with parts cut away.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the conveyor shown in FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the toothed wheels and of the motor shaft.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of one form of carrier element suitable for use with the object of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 2 denotes in general a frame in which a drive shaft 3 journals. A shaft 4, suitably mounted on a tensioning mechanism of conventional construction, also journals in the frame 2.
An apron 6 to which guides 7 and 8 are fixed for the conveyor element extends longitudinally on the frame.
Referring particularly to Figure 3, the shaft 3 is provided with toothed wheels 9 keyed to this shaft. These wheels are movable longitudinally on the shaft, although they remain always kept in rotation by and with it.
Each toothed wheel 9 is provided with hubs 10 extending
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
axially and on each side of these wheels. A sleeve 11 is placed between each pair of toothed wheels. The length of this sleeve is slightly less than the distance between the teeth of 2 neighboring wheels, but greater than the distance between their hubs.
The sleeves 11 fit on the hubs of the wheels 9 and in this way limit and adjust the axial movement of the wheels on the shaft.
The sleeves and the hubs are placed in such a way that even if all the rakes were driven on the same side on the shaft, the last sleeve will still remain interlocking on the hubs, in this way there is no possibility that a sleeve could lose contact with the wheels. Guide members 12 are also provided on the shaft 3 to guide the conveyor element by its edges.
The lattice transport element 13 is provided to extend around the axes 3 and 4, and is adapted to be moved by the toothed wheels 9. The teeth of these engage in the interstices of the lattice and their action is worn on the meshes, so as to produce the advancement of the conveyor element.
By the forecast of a. ', a number of wheels spaced transversely to the transport element, the driving force which is communicated is distributed uniformly over the transport element and prevents any abnormal tension of the latter.
Furthermore, due to the limited fit of the toothed wheels on the shaft, they can move axially on the shaft so as to adapt to the interstices of the meshes.
Thus a very effective drive will take place which will move the conveyor element without exerting undue stress on it, and at the same time provide greater power.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
only when the conveyor element is driven by its edges only.
The conveyor element surrounds the apron 6 and is guided by guide members 7 and 8 so as to be held in place during the wake-up call.
An anti-friction part 14 is provided to support the transport element when the latter passes the toothed wheels on the guide 8.
The shaft 4 can be provided with individual toothed wheels corresponding to the wheels 9 on the shaft 3, or it can be simply cylindrical to act as a support for the transport element.
However, it is preferable to provide it with toothed wheels, although this is not essential, especially since the driving force is exerted on the conveyor element entirely by the shaft 3, via the toothed wheels.
In Fig. 4, a modified form of trellis has been shown which is particularly well suited to the use of the invention. If use is made of a transport element such as that shown in FIG. 4, the adjustment sleeves 11 can be omitted as there is very little chance that the mesh can be pulled out of alignment as in the case of the type shown in Fig. 1.
However, it is desirable to provide sleeves in order to avoid complications in the event of the mesh breaking, or in the event that the latter manages to come loose.
The invention is obviously not limited to this embodiment. It can include all the embodiments having the characteristics of the claims below.
