<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
La figure 1 représente une coupe diamé- trale longitudinale d'une jambe de force comportant l'application de l'invention;
La figure 2 représente, à plus grande échelle, une coupe transversale suivant 2-2 de la figure 1;
La figure 3 représente, toujours à plus grande échelle, une coupe transversale suivant 3-3 de la figure 1 ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

"Improvements to the struts intended to absorb shocks".
The present invention relates to various improvements to the struts which are intended to absorb shocks and which are. mainly used on the landing gear of airplanes or seaplanes.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a strut whose construction is simple and compact, and which not only absorbs the impact of the landing or the other impacts suffered by the landing gear. landing when the apparatus moves on the ground or on the water, but still absorbs the rebound resulting from the compression of the compressible fluid enclosed in the said strut.
More particularly, one of the characteristics of the invention consists in the production of a strut constituted by a set of telescopic organs inside which there is a chamber containing compressed air and oil or other non-compressible fluid whereby when an impact occurs during a landing, very satisfactory damping is obtained and also extremely advantageous suppression of abrupt rebound.
That is to say, the return movement of the telescopic members is delayed so as to be relatively slow compared to the telescopic movement which occurs in the opposite direction.
The invention also aims at the application, to an apparatus of the type indicated, of a valve with a very simple direction, very safe and of a low cost price.
Finally, the invention relates to an arrangement of the members of the apparatus whereby the pressure existing below a piston which comes to be subjected to a rebounding movement is used to increase the clamping and the friction.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
contact of the gasket used as a seal between the elements which slide with respect to each other, whereby not only is the losses of pressurized fluid effectively avoided at the moment when said losses are likely to occur, but also increases the amount of energy available to oppose the rebounding movement, the whole having the consequence of ensuring the device operation and an excessively smooth action.
The other objects and new characteristics of the invention will appear in the description which follows of an embodiment indicated by way of example and shown in the appended drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows a longitudinal diametral section of a strut incorporating the application of the invention;
FIG. 2 shows, on a larger scale, a cross section taken along 2-2 of FIG. 1;
Figure 3 shows, still on a larger scale, a cross section on 3-3 of Figure 1;
FIG. 4 represents a detailed section taken on 4-4 of FIG. 2, said section showing the piston and the annular valve in a position different from that in which these organs are represented in FIG. 1.
The drawing in question shows two main telescopic members. The superior and external organ can be defined in a way
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
generally as constituting a cylinder 10 and comprising a tubular member 11 threaded at its upper end so as to receive a dome-shaped head 12, the lower end of said tubular member 11 being widened, in accordance with what is described above. shown at 13, so as to receive the lining which will be described below
Inside the tubular element 11 is disposed a metal piston 14 adjusted with the necessary precision so that it can slide smoothly inside the cylinder, said piston preferably being provided with several circular grooves. lubrication 15.
To said piston is conveniently connected a piston rod 16 which is preferably tubular and whose diameter is smaller than that of the piston.
In order to ensure the fixing of the piston rod in question on the piston, it is possible, for example, to provide the latter with a shank 17 which screws into the threaded upper end of the tube 16 which constitutes the piston rod. , the provision in question realizing, between the two members, a rigid assembly.
Any means can be used to connect the cylinder 10 and the piston rod 16 to the moving parts of a vehicle on which it is desired to obtain a damping effect.
The connection means in question can vary considerably depending on the type of vehicle on which the device in question is to be applied.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
To use it on airplanes, it is possible to fix on the head 12, by means of a screw connection, a tubular extension bar 18 at the free end of which it can also be fixed, by a screw connection. or in any other similar way, a connecting ring 19, the eye 20 of which can receive a bolt or a fixing rod.
The lower end of the rod of the tube 16 which constitutes the piston rod can also be threaded so as to receive a reducing connection 21 onto which is screwed a tubular extension rod 22 similar to the rod 18 and, as will easily be understood, at the free end of said rod 22 can be fixed any connecting member and, for example, a member identical to member 19.
The cylinder 10 is intended to be filled with fluids, preferably oil and pressurized air.
Any cap, any filling valve can be used and, as the mode of construction of these members is not in any way part of the present invention, we have only shown a view. exterior in 23.
On the smooth part of the tail 17 of the piston is freely mounted a flat metal ring 24 movable inside a housing 25 arranged between the piston proper and the upper end of the tube 16 which constitutes the rod. piston.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Channels 26 are pierced in the ring 24, and at an equal distance from its center. At the same distance from its axis, the piston 14 itself comprises channels 27 parallel to said axis, which channels, if it is desired, may have a narrowed portion at 28.
The lower surface of the piston head or the upper surface of the ring 24 or both may have a circular groove for providing a continuous flow of fluid through the channels 27 and the channels 26 when. the valve ring 24 is in its upper position and is therefore pressed against the head of the piston.
In the illustrated embodiment, one of the grooves in question is indicated at 29 in the lower surface of the piston, the other groove being indicated at 30 on the upper surface of the ring 24.
Between the upper surface of the piston and the housing 25, but closer to the axis of the piston than the channels 27, there are other channels 31 which are closed by the upper planar surface of the valve ring 24 when the latter is in its high position.
At the junction point of the tubular element 11 and its widened part 13, there is an annular shoulder 32 and between the piston rod 16 and the internal surface of the widening 13 is mounted a retaining washer 33. which can slide between the aforementioned members, its movement in one direction being limited by the shoulder 32 which
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
plays the role of a stopper.
Below said washer 33 and in the annular space between the widened part 13 of the cylinder 11 and the piston rod 16 is placed a gasket 34 consisting of rings some of which are constructed so as to undergo an extension. radial when a certain pressure is exerted on them in a direction parallel to the axis of the cylinder.
At the end of the widened part 13 is screwed a threaded plug 35 which presses against the lower end of said gasket 34.
The threaded plug in question 35 is used to adjust the minimum friction exerted by the gasket 34 against the walls of the elements.
16 and 13.
When the cap 35 is screwed in, the gasket 34 expands and the corresponding friction is increased.
A locking nut 36 serves to immobilize the threaded plug 35 in the adjustment position given to it.
The packing 34 is of a known commercial type and its particular shape does not in any way constitute an element of the invention.
After the various components of the device have been assembled and after the strut has been fitted, for example, between the landing gear and the fuselage of an airplane (the filler cap 23 being open and the piston being completely retracted into the cylinder, that is
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
say the piston being against the head or roughly cohorts the head of the cylinder.) oil is introduced until the head 12 is substantially full.
The end of a compressed air pipe is then attached to the filler plug 23 and air is introduced into the strut until the weight of the part of the aé - the plane which is located on the side of the upper end of the strut is balanced by the pressure of the air introduced, the piston being substantially in the position in which it is shown in figure 1 .
During this filling or inflation, the cylinder 10 naturally rises by lifting the aeroplane and, at the same time, the oil fills the annular space 9 between the piston 14 and the retaining washer of the seal linings 33; the oil stops a little above the top of the piston.
When the airplane rises from the ground and unloads the strut from its weight, the pressure existing in the cylinder 10 causes the said strut to lengthen up to the maximum possible limit, that is, that is to say until the moment when the piston 14 comes to rest against the retaining washer 33 and exerts on it a pressure equal to that which acts on its own surface.
In this way, the washer 33 is pushed down causing a large expansion of the gasket 34.
When the airplane is in the air, a very tight seal is thus achieved between the two
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
telesoopic organs 10 and 16 and, therefore, even if the airplane overturns during its flight, which sometimes occurs, no leakage occurs in the oil which is at the lower end of the leg of strength ; Furthermore, since the pressurized air acts on the gasket packing, said gasket remains sufficiently tight to prevent any appreciable loss of pressure which is extremely important with devices of the type considered.
Upon landing, the landing gear hits the ground with considerable force.
Said force forces the piston 14 to move rapidly upwards in the cylinder 10 despite the opposing pressure of the compressed air contained in the cylinder.
At the beginning of this movement of movement the oil which is in the strut is practically all above the piston.
However, the ring 24 is in its down position, as shown in Figure 1, and minimal resistance is offered to the flow of oil through channels 31 and 27 to keep the oil flowing through channels 31 and 27. go into housing 25 and thence, through channels 26, into the annular space below the piston.
As soon as the piston moves away from the retaining washer 33 and advances rapidly inside the cylinder 10, thus significantly reducing the area along which the pressure existing in the cylinder 10 can act on said washer
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
retaining 33 and creating a slight vacuum in the annular space reserved below .de the piston head; the pressure exerted on the retaining washer 33 being greatly reduced, said washer moves upwards and comes to rest against the shoulder 32, as a result, the sliding parts are no longer subjected, by the gasket lining 34, that has a minimum friction.
When the force of the impact is balanced by the pressure which develops below the piston, the latter stops and the energy thus stored in the air which is strongly compressed. inside the cylinder tends to push the piston downwards, causing it to undergo a violent displacement.
The piston head immediately reaches the free valve ring 24, in accordance with what is indicated in FIG. 4, and this ring is held in its upper position by the pressure of the oil which is located below it.
As a result, the channels 31 are closed and the oil can flow upwards through the piston only with the limited speed set by the constrictions through the 28 of the channels 27.
The rebound is thus slowed down.
At the same time, however, the oil in the annulus 9 transmits the strong pressure exerted above the piston to the retaining washer 29 located below and forces this retaining washer to lower and back. cause expansion of the gasket 34.
Thanks to what has just been indicated, a
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
Additional high friction is caused between the sliding parts and helps to slow down the rebound course.
Although, as already indicated, the invention has been described with a view to its main application to airplanes and seaplanes, the field of the said invention is in no way limited to this particular application and it could be used on any vehicles such as, for example, motor cars.
