<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Method and device for manufacturing homogeneous lead coatings.
In the manufacture of coatings by the known method of spraying metals, the metal to be coated is passed over a flame in which it is molten. , to then be sent by the action of the flame of the blower and by means of a stream of compressed air against the object to be coated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It has also been proposed in particular for the manufacture of metal coatings, to melt the product to be applied (in the form of powder or dust) by means of a strongly heated compressed gas, preferably compressed air, and 'then apply.
These processes have certain defects by their nature; metal to be applied comes into contact with atmospheric air, as well as with the combustion products of the flames, which, depending on the metals used, is a major drawback, and makes it impossible, owing to the oxidation of the metal, to manufacture a flawless coating. The temperature of the jets of the thin flames is not adjustable, and not high enough so that at the melting point an extraordinary overheating of the metal occurs, which would favor oxidation of the sprayed metal (= large reaction surface). These disadvantages are avoided by the present process, since the melting of the in / metal takes place / the head of the nozzle, i.e. takes place completely in the absence of air and is used a suitable compressed and heated gas without oxidizing effect.
It should be noted that the relatively low temperature of the melting process is one of the essential characteristics of the present invention.
We will say, in passing, that it took at least 20 years to make this observation; the fundamental researches of the Applicant, and which have enabled the technique of metal spraying to reach such a high degree of improvement, date in fact to the summer of 1908. The new process is particularly suitable for the manufacture of lead and lead coatings. tin.
In what follows, for the sake of simplicity,. lead wire. @
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The lead wire feed / is produced by means of the same stream of compressed gas, e.g. carbon dioxide, which produces the melting, splitting and coating, and in this way is avoided. that the metal does not come into contact with the oxidizing atmosphere before the. formation of, rovêtemont.
Heating of the compressed gas most preferably takes place by means of a heater or glow head through which the gas is conducted.
This body has an inner core on which are placed discs forming baffles, and making it possible to reduce the flow speed, as well as a jacket or jacket. exterior provided with a conical hole and which fits exactly on the periphery of the disc which has a corresponding shape.
The description which will follow with regard to the appended drawing given by way of example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented.
Fig. 1 represents an embodiment of the device for the most part in schematic section.
Figs. 2 and 3 respectively represent the core and the mantle of the heating body,
Fig. 4 represents two neighboring disks.
The device recalls, as an external form, metallizing guns; the regular lead wire 1 is pushed into the heating body at a rate / by two conveyor wheels, 3.4 driven by a paddle wheel 2 forming the rotor of a small turbine. The impeller is driven by the compressed gas, which arrives through pipe 5 and through the channel
6, and thus produces the advance of the lead wire 1. The gas exiting the wheel 2 reaches channel 7 and from there to the heating body.

The heating body has a core, inner 8, on which are mounted a number of discs 9 placed one behind the other, which can be in one piece with the core, and a jacket or jacket. exterior 10.
This has a conical hole, and fits by lapping exactly on the peripheries of the discs of corresponding shape. The compressed gas passes between the core and the jacket of the heating body. The discs 9 intervene to decrease the gas flow speed, and force it to travel the longest possible path in the heating body, and act as baffles. Grooves
11 are provided at 180 0 in these discs for the passage of gas from one of them to the following disc.

At the conical end 13, grooves 14 are provided in the direction of the generators of the cone, distributed regularly around the perimeter and through which the gas exits forming a cone of uniform and continuous rays. A protective disc 15 is mounted behind the head 12.
The heating of the heating body and consequently the indirect heating of the gas can be carried out by means of two darts or blades of thundering gas (oxyhydrogen or oxy-acetylene gas) directly licking the jacket 10 and one of which, exiting through the The ballast nozzle is seen in Figure 1. The gas is supplied to the nozzles 16 through the pipe 17.
Due to the use of thundering gas flames, local temperatures of nearly 3000 can be counted on. The choice of an appropriate resistant material

lasting heat has caused significant difficulties, since the usual products available to it, such as chromium steel, nickel alloys, and the like, have high melts, but which are however well below 3000. However, the problem has been successfully solved by applying a carburizing method, which is briefly described below:
the separate parts 8, 10 and 12 (molten steel) are cleaned and coated with a layer of aluminum. The parts thus treated are then heated in a mixture of pulverized charcoal and bauxite in a current of air at 800 for 4 hours, in boxes.
This subsequent heat treatment causes, as a result of the diffusion of the aluminum into the underlying iron layer, the formation of an alloy, which is extraordinarily strong. stant, of the form Fe A1203. The hardened surface layer is usually 1.5 mm thick and is so extraordinarily hard that a subsequent lapping of the conical mantle

Incandescent heads treated in this manner have, according to the results and observations obtained so far, a life of 7 to 8 months, after which the jacket 10 exposed to the jets of flame must be replaced.
The conical shape facilitates, despite the high temperatures to which the heating body is exposed, assembly and disassembly.

As can be seen, this prevents the lead, once introduced into the heating body, from coming into contact with the atmosphere or with flames;
the protective disc 15, in particular prevents flames of gas or their products from reaching the spray cone and adversely affecting the subdivided lead.
There can therefore be no oxidation phenomena, and it is in this that lies the explanation of the fact that the invention makes it possible to obtain healthy, homogeneous and impervious lead or tin coatings. , which is particularly important in the chemical and food industry.
