<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

EMI1.1
Seals for making gaskets 90. supports elastics and resulting products
The object of the present invention is a process for manufacturing elastic joints or supports and, in particular, oscillating joints of the type comprising two concentric metal bushings, or their equivalent, between which is interposed a ring of elastic material, rubber. or the like, suitably deformed initially.
In order to manufacture supports with highly stretched elastic joints, that is to say at the same time greatly reduced in their radial dimensions (compared to the original state of the elastic material), the difficulty resulting from the adhesion which occurs between the elastic material on the one hand, and the metal walls which contain it, on the other hand, during its deformation.
In other words, the elastic material, while it is being stretched, tends to adhere, that is to say refuses to travel along the punch, the die, or the metal sockets.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
constituting the interior and exterior of. joint or elastic support completed.
This adhesion results either in seizure with tearing, or by rolls or reversals or other phenomena which lead to a bad final product.
The use of lubricant obviates these drawbacks on condition that this lubricant (water, soap water, petroleum jelly, etc.) is not expelled before the end of the operation. It has already been proposed for this purpose to proceed with the manufacture of the seals or elastic supports by animating the parts, in relative movement during manufacture, at a high speed.
The manufacturing process according to the invention, which also overcomes the aforementioned drawbacks, is remarkable, in particular, in that it consists in forming at the ends of the initial prison of elastic material roundings or edges on the edges. edges of said ring having to come into contact with metal parts, sockets, tools, etc ...
The invention also relates to a tool (die and punch) which allows the introduction of a pressurized lubricant between the ring of elastic material and the metal bushings during manufacture of the seal or elastic support.
Other features of the invention will emerge from the description which follows, in the appended drawing, given solely by way of example:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of the initial ring of elastic material. FIGS. 2 and 3 are two schematic sectional views showing the two manufacturing operations of an elastic seal or support.
FIG. 4 is a sectional view of a die according to the invention, for carrying out the first operation.
FIG. 5 is an elevational view of a punch, for performing the second operation.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In the exemplary embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the initial ring 1 of elastic material has, at each of its ends and on its edges, intended to come into contact with metal surfaces, fillets or rounded edges designated by AA, BB, CC, DD, straight lines AA, BB etc ... representing circular sections, or their equivalent.
Thanks to these fillets are rounded off during the introduction of the prison 1 in the die or in the outer sleeve 2, and during the introduction of the punch and the inner sleeve 3 in the ring 1, the lubricant, which coats the surfaces of said prison and said sleeves at the start of the fitting operation, is driven between the surfaces in contact and prevents the adhesion of the prison on the metal surfaces.
This effect is analogous to that known under the name of “Mitchel” effect and advantageously used for the lubrication of the bearings. Of course, the fillets or rounded edges can be provided on all the rings of elastic material regardless of the speed at which said rings are fitted.
To prevent even more effectively the seizure of the ring of elastic material on the metal surfaces, it is possible to provide a supply of pressurized lubricant, between the surfaces concerned between which the seizure must not occur, this supply of pressurized lubricant being able to be made by any suitable means. By way of example one could use a die 4 (see FIG. 4) pierced @ orifioes 6 for entering the lubricant, and opening into grooves 8 facing the small base of the funnel, Likewise, the punch ( fig5) could be pierced with an axial channel 7 and radial channels 7a opening into grooves 9 facing the large base of the punch.
The pressure of the lubricant may be greater than that which the stretching creates in the elastic material, so that the latter does not enter these orifices. This disadvantage can also be avoided by
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
arranging the lubricant inlet orifices 6 behind the movement, the die 4 and the punch 5 being constructed in the manner of a canvas roof (case of the drawing).
Of course, the scope of the invention will not be departed from by eliminating the roundings CC which have been provided only by measurement of symmetry and to prevent, by negligence, the band of elastic material appearing upside down. . We can also remove the rounded B-B which may play a lesser role than A-A and D-D. Likewise, the invention is not limited to the embodiment of the die and of the punch shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, this embodiment having been described and shown only by way of example.
