<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Combination of generator for lighting and starter motor for combustion engines.
The object of the present invention is a series motor which is coupled directly to the crankshaft of the combustion engine and which, by switching the inductor winding, alternately functions also as a generator for lighting with the same voltage as. the starter motor. This possibility is obtained by the fact that the series motor is constructed with a high torque and a low number of revolutions, so that the generator for lighting also arrives, with a relatively small number of revolutions, at the voltage required.
Since the field winding for the series motor must oppose the electric current as little resistance as possible, but, on the other hand, a large resistance is
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
necessary for the dynamo-shunt, in order to obtain as little current reception as possible in the field, due to the automatic regulation of the voltage for various numbers of turns, the inductor winding is, according to the present invention , subdivided into several partial windings which can be coupled in parallel for the series motor or in series for the dynamo-shunt. For example, for 6 poles, 12 inductor coils can be used, therefore two coils per pole.
A more suitable arrangement is one which has as many pole pairs as there are coils, so that the field winding is subdivided into as many field coils as there are poles. The ends of these field coils are led to contacts where they can be coupled in parallel or in series by means of a suitable switch.
So, for example, a 6-pole machine with 6 field coils is not yet suitable for switching, because, if it is assumed that the starter motor must, at a voltage of 6 volts and with a drop voltage of about 1 volt, receive a current of 170 amperes in the short-circuit torque, the armature will present about 0.015 ohm and the field also about 0.015 ohm resistance, that is, - say in total 0.03 ohm, which corresponds to an intensity of 5: 0.03. 170 amps; one of the 6 field coils coupled in series would therefore have 0.015 x 6 = 0.09 ohm and 6 of these coils coupled in series 6 x 0.09 = 0.54 ohm.
This would correspond to a bypass current, under a load voltage of 7 volts, of 7: 0.54 = 13 amps.
This excitation current is too high for an automatic voltage regulator, as it will burn out the regulator contacts and require too thick a wire. The conditions are more favorable for a 12 pole machine, where a single coil has 0.015 x 12 = 0.18 ohm and all 12 coils connected in series 12 x 0.18 = 2.2 ohms in shunt. This
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
resistance is a shunt current of 3.2 amps at a load voltage of 7 volts, which is a suitable current for an automatic voltage regulator.
The switching is shown in the accompanying drawing for a 12-pole machine. Figure 1 is a longitudinal section and Fig. 2 a cross section of the apparatus. Fig. 3 shows the coils coupled in parallel for the machine serving as the starter motor, and fig. 4 shows the coupling of the coils in series for the bypass excitation of the generator for lighting. As seen in the freezes.
1 and 2, the 2 ends of the field windings 1 are connected separately to the insulated terminals 2. These terminals 2 each carry, at their lower end, a contact spring 3, and these springs are supported on the cylinder. switching 4.
The switching cylinder 4 carries, on its cylindrical surface, two rows of contacts 5 and 6, which each consist of 24 contacts. The contacts of the front row of contacts 5 are connected by half to the outer coupling bar 7, and by half to the inner coupling bar 8 (fig.3), and the coils are therefore coupled in parallel. If, therefore, the battery current is connected to the coupling bar 7 and the switching cylinder is moved relative to the spring 9 so that the contact springs 3 rest on the front row of contacts 5, the current flows through the field coils in the direction of the arrows and exits through the coupling bar 8.
The bar 8 is connected to the carbon. + Of the armature, and the carbon - is, as is usually done, grounded. The device is therefore coupled as a series motor.
But if, for example, the switching cylinder is pushed forward by the spring 9, the contact springs 3 rest on the rear row of contacts 6. But the contacts of row 6 are connected by the contact bars. link 10 so that the field coils are coupled in
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
series, as shown in fig. 4. This figure also shows that one of the 24 contacts, contact M, is connected to the earth of the device, therefore to the - pole, while contact 11 is led outwards to the voltage regulator (fig. 4 ).
The movement of the switching cylinder can take place in various ways. In fig.l is provided, for example, a lever 12 which is moved by means of a flexible Bowden transmission or a rod system. This movement can also be controlled just as easily by an electro-magnetic relay.
In the case described above, the spring 9 is arranged so that there is, at, the stop or at. the operating state of the device, the coupling for the light generator, and that the device only acts as a starting motor when the switching is activated. But the device can also be used inversely, so that the device is, when stationary, coupled as a starting motor, which is switched on by means of an electromagnetic or mechanical series switch, then to whereby a centrifugal regulator, which moves the switching cylinder a certain speed of rotation, switches the device to make it work as a generator for lighting.
This arrangement also has, in addition, this essential advantage that it is possible to avoid the use of the automatic circuit breaker which interrupts the communication between the dynamo and the battery when stopping. In this case, the switch is usefully blocked by a catch which releases the switch only at a speed at which the light generator is already producing a voltage greater than that of the battery.
As already mentioned at the beginning, the switch serves to couple the field coils in parallel according to fig.3 and in series according to fig.4. However, when the switch is actuated, for example during operation, that is to say when the dynamo is energized, the bypass coils neck -
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
When interrupted in series, they will produce a breaking spark which could, over time, attack the switching contact paths and give rise to disturbances.
To avoid this danger, the present invention provides that the switch is turned off before it is actuated; for this, the excitation line which goes to the regulating device passes through a switch (fig. la) which interrupts the excitation line before the switch contacts leave their contact paths. The interrupting spark is thus diverted from the sensitive switch contacts and is caused in a switch which can be constructed strong enough so that these interrupting sparks cannot cause damage. If one does not shrink from the expense, the interruption spark can be entirely avoided by means of a suitable capacitor inserted in the interruption.
